Traditionally considered to be a “women’s disease,” it can nevertheless affect men, as well.  Symptoms of interstitial cystitis can range from: 

Pelvic pain between the vagina and anus in women…pain between the scrotum and anus in men…chronic pelvic pain…persistent and urgent need to urinate…frequent urination, often in small amounts but dozens of times throughout the day and night… pain or discomfort when the bladder becomes full, and relief after urinating…and aggravating pain during sexual intercourse.

The MayoClinic website also claims there’s no infectious basis for interstitial cystitis.  They write, “Although signs and symptoms of interstitial cystitis may resemble those of a chronic urinary tract infection, there's usually no infection. However, symptoms may worsen if a person with interstitial cystitis gets a urinary tract infection.”

While both MayoClinic.com and WebMD.com claim there’s no clear cause for interstitial cystitis, both websites say doctors have “several ideas” for what might cause the condition, including:

• A problem with bladder tissue that allows substances in your urine to irritate your bladder. 

• Inflammation that causes your body to release chemicals that cause symptoms. 

• Something in your urine that damages your bladder. 

• A nerve problem that makes your bladder feel pain from things that usually don’t hurt. 

• Your immune system attacks the bladder. 

• Or, a separate condition that causes inflammation is, in essence, spilling over onto the bladder. 

In other words, the medical community doesn’t even remotely know what causes interstitial cystitis.  They suspect something causes irritation to the bladder lining, with corresponding inflammation.  But they’re sure it’s not an infection. 

Hmmm.  I can remember not too long back when doctors were sure ulcers weren’t caused by infections, also – until, that is, a pair of medical researchers from Australia discovered the H. pyloria pathogen and deciphered its role as a cause of peptic ulcers.

Contradicting both WebMD.com and MayoClinic.com, the RegenerativeNutrition.com site recommends colloidal silver for victims of interstitial cystitis, stating it will “…gradually eliminate infections such as candida, mycoplasma and other known or unknown infections that are almost always present and contribute to Interstitial Cystitis.”

Why did colloidal silver seem to work so well for this lady’s good friend?  There may indeed have been an infection involved in the woman’s bladder.

Colloidal Silver: Why Smaller Truly Is Better

Yes, folks, even the FDA admits that smaller silver nanoparticles are easier for the body to absorb, utilize and afterwards expel, compared to larger silver nanoparticles.

What’s more, a plethora of clinical studies have demonstrated conclusively that the smaller the silver particles are, the more effective they are against pathogens, too. 

In fact, among clinical researchers this is now one of the most wide-accepted axioms about colloidal silver:  Smaller silver particles are vastly more effective than larger silver particles.   

Here’s the scoop you need to understand if you want to make the best choice possible when utilizing colloidal silver…

By definition, a silver nanoparticle is a tiny particle of silver that’s between 1nm and 100 nm in size.  Most silver nanoparticles sold commercially in colloidal silver products today are at the upper end of this size scale.

Yet even at the upper end of the scale researchers say it would take about 100,000 of the largest silver nanoparticles to make up the period at the end of this sentence.  That’s how astonishingly small even the largest of silver nanoparticles are. 

Nevertheless, Smaller Is Better

Nevertheless, according to the FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research Annual Report for 2011, silver nanoparticle size makes a big difference in terms of how effectively the body can absorb, distribute and utilize orally ingested silver particles.

Indeed, in animal studies conducted by the FDA only limited absorption, distribution and elimination of silver nanoparticles was observed when the silver nanoparticles were on the larger end of the scale. 

However, as the silver particle size decreased, absorption by the body increased proportionately. According to the report:

“…During Fiscal Year 2011, Division investigators examined the effect of the size of silver nanoparticles on the bioavailability, tissue distribution, metabolism, and clearance in rats.

The results indicated that, after oral administration, only limited absorption occurs, with the extent of absorption increasing as the size of the [silver] particles decreased.”

In other words, when the FDA conducted animal studies looking to see whether silver particle size had any effect on the way the body absorbed, processed, utilized and afterwards excreted the silver, they discovered that smaller silver nanoparticles were far more bioavailable (i.e., able to circulate systemically and be eliminated afterwards) than larger silver nanoparticles. 

Indeed, the FDA found that larger silver nanoparticles were barely at all systemically absorbable.  This is vital to understand, because it means larger silver nanoparticles are unlikely to be effectively utilized by the body against pathogens. 

Unless the silver particles are in the lower end of the nanoparticle size range, the body simply can’t put them to use.  There’s very little “bioavailability, tissue distribution, metabolism, and clearance” when larger silver nanoparticles are orally ingested. 

Smaller is More Effective, Too!

Perhaps more importantly, researchers writing in a clinical overview published on January 28, 2016 in the journal Nanoscale Research Letters, pointed out that smaller silver nanoparticles are also more effective against pathogens than larger silver nanoparticles.  They wrote: 

“Compared to larger silver nanoparticles, smaller silver nanoparticles have a greater binding surface and show more bactericidal activity.”

Andrew Maynard, a physicist and chief scientific advisor to the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, concurs with this analysis, stating:

“Silver becomes more active against microbes when it's made into smaller particles.”  This, clinical researchers explain, is because the more finely divided the silver particles are, the more surface area of the bacteria (or bacterial colony) they can cover and penetrate.  (See Wall Street Journal, June 6, 2006, The War Against Germs Has a Silver Lining.)

Researcher S.M. Foran, writing in Therapeutic Properties of Silver:  A Historical and Technical Review in the journal Quanta, also pointed out that smaller silver particles penetrate microbes “more rapidly and effectively” than larger particles or clusters of particles.  He states:

“The most current research indicates that a silver product must have a low silver concentration and contain small silver particles that are charged (ions) for it to produce the most beneficial effects."

The Physician & Practitioner Administered Therapies guide produced by The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine points out another benefit of using extremely small silver particles:  They’re vastly more effective against viruses.  They write: 

“In general…it takes a smaller particle size to kill a virus v/s a bacteria.”

Chinese researchers looking at the antimicrobial effects of tiny silver nanoparticles on Hepatitis B virus found that the smaller silver nanoparticles worked better because they more easily bind with small molecules such as the receptor sites on the outside of viruses. 

Smaller Works Better on

Drug-Resistant Pathogens, Too!

This increased antimicrobial effectiveness of smaller silver nanoparticles (compared to larger silver nanoparticles) has been borne out by numerous additional clinical studies over the past two decades, including studies on drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA. 

For example, in a 2006 study published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B, titled “Silver Colloidal Nanoparticles:  Synthesis, Characterization and Their Antimicrobial Activity,” researchers pointed out that the deadly super-pathogen MRSA could easily be destroyed with silver, “as long as the silver particles were very small, averaging 25 nm.” 

Indeed, the increased effectiveness of smaller silver particles against pathogens is now considered axiomatic, which is to say, self-evident, because it’s been conclusively demonstrated in so many different clinical studies. 

For example, one recent clinical study at Hebrew University in Israel demonstrated that when bacteria are treated with extremely small silver particles, the bacteria absorb them like a sponge. 

Then, as the bacteria die, they re-release the tiny silver particles into the bacterial colony, killing even more of the bacteria until the entire colony is dead.  The researchers actually called this “the zombie effect.” 

In short, smaller silver particles are not only more bioavailable than larger silver particles (meaning the body is able to absorb, distribute and utilize them more effectively), but they’re also more effective against pathogens.

Silver Ions Kill “Armor-Plated” Bacteria

Once again, science proves it’s the silver ion that’s responsible for silver’s astonishing effectiveness against some of the most hardy and difficult-to-eradicate pathogens on the face of the earth.

Below, you’ll learn what clinical researchers discovered when they treated one of the world’s most difficult-to-kill pathogens – Bacillus subtilis – with silver nanoparticles. 

Here’s a hint:  Researchers discovered that it wasn’t the metallic silver nanoparticles that killed the pathogen. It was the silver ions released by the metallic silver nanoparticles that caused the fatal damage. 

This proves once again that ionic silver is the active, infection-fighting form of colloidal silver, and that all other forms of silver are effective only to the extent they release silver ions in the presence of pathogens.

In a clinical study with the lengthy title “The Antimicrobial Properties of Silver Nanoparticles in Bacillus subtilis Are Mediated by Released Ag+ Ions,” researchers discovered that silver nanoparticles exhibit profound antimicrobial action against the Bacillus subtilis bacterium – one of the world’s most difficult-to-kill microbes. 

But here’s the clincher:  That effectiveness was due largely to the release of silver ions from the metallic silver nanoparticles used in the experiment, and not due to the metallic silver nanoparticles themselves. 

Although Bacillus subtilis is a relatively benign soil bacteria, scientists know that it’s extremely difficult to kill due to its ability to produce endospores -- a kind of “armor plating” which makes the microbe virtually impervious to a variety of disinfectants and toxic chemicals including antibiotic drugs.

Thanks to this “armor plating,” the pathogen is also virtually immune to temperature variations, desiccation, ultra-violet light, and even to starvation since it can go dormant for months or even years at a time, hiding within its tough endospore shell whenever it feels threatened by antibiotic drugs or other substances.

But the researchers behind the above-mentioned study found that silver ions busted right through the tough outer shell of Bacillus subtilus, just as previous researchers have discovered that silver ions bust through the bacterial biofilms used by colonies of drug-resistant super-pathogens to protect themselves against antibiotic drugs.

Similar to Anthrax

Because of its unusual characteristics, Bacillus subtilis is often used in clinical testing as a substitute for its first-cousin Bacillus anthracis – yes, the deadly anthrax pathogen, which has similar qualities that make it just as difficult to eradicate. 

Indeed, for decades Bacillus subtilis has been used by the U.S. Army as a “simulant” in germ warfare studies of the anthrax pathogen.  When the military wants to know if a substance can kill anthrax, they first test that substance against Bacillus subtilis.  If the substance can kill Bacillus subtilis, then the military researchers can be relatively certain it can kill anthrax as well.

In the above-mentioned clinical study, researchers treated Bacillus subtilis cultures with 0-50 ppm concentrations of silver nanoparticles, and found that while a concentration of only 5 ppm inhibited bacterial growth for 12 hours, concentrations of 10 ppm and higher were lethal to the otherwise difficult-to-kill bacterium.

The researchers found that reactive oxygen species triggered by the release of positively charged silver ions from the silver nanoparticles contributed to the breakdown of the tough “armor plated” cell membrane of the microbe, and that the ionic silver then penetrated the cell membrane and disrupted the integrity of the microbe’s chromosomal DNA causing it to die.

The researchers concluded:

“To the best of our understanding, this is the first study to directly analyze silver particles present within bacterial cells treated with silver nanoparticles, and the results indicate that positively charged silver ions are primarily responsible for silver nanoparticle microbial toxicity…

…our results support the theory that silver nanoparticles exert microbial toxicity through the release of positively charged silver ions that subsequently penetrate into bacterial cells.”

Once again, this is very important to understand: 

The researchers treated the microbes with relatively low levels of metallic silver particles (i.e., silver nanoparticles).  But they discovered that the metallic silver particles didn’t kill the hardy microbes. 

Instead, the silver ions being released by the metallic silver particles did the killing, first, by releasing reactive oxygen species (much like hydrogen peroxide) that essentially “softened up” the tough outer microbial shell of the pathogen, and second, by penetrating that damaged shell wall, entering the microbe, and binding to its DNA.

This proves, once again, that the silver ion (i.e., ionic silver) is the active, infection-fighting form of silver, and that metallic silver (i.e., silver nanoparticles) is only effective to the extent it releases silver ions in the presence of the pathogens. 

This is why smart colloidal silver users always choose the superior ionic form of colloidal silver over the metallic silver nanoparticle form.  They know the metallic form must first be converted into the ionic form inside the human body in order to work – a process which is both slow and inefficient compared to utilizing pure ionic colloidal silver instead.
