Colloidal Silver Stops Sepsis

Sepsis is a serious infection that spreads throughout the body in three stages – sepsis, septicemia and septic shock – ultimately triggering massive inflammation that begins shutting down organ function, resulting in death, if not controlled quickly.

The CDC has declared sepsis a medical emergency that strikes nearly one million Americans a year, and kills an astonishing 258,000 people a year nationally. Weakened immunity is said to be the top reason for contracting sepsis after an infection.  And according to MayoClinic.com, “Antibiotic resistant bacteria are often the root cause of the infections that trigger sepsis.”

This past September a gentleman named Michael Bergers claimed his life was saved by doctors after he contracted sepsis from a paper cut that apparently became infected. 

According to a news article by CBS local news, Bergers “had a little cut on his finger that turned into sepsis” resulting in “a three week medically induced coma.”

In other words, in order to save his life, the doctors had to put him into a coma, and then treat him aggressively with powerful antibiotics and other drugs.  Berger later told CBS, “It scared the hell out of me.”

According to the local CBS news affiliate in Philadelphia:

“Sepsis is often triggered by a flesh eating bacteria that can cause organ failure. Michael describes the shock, “They said I was circling the drain, I had a 50/50 shot from what they told me, I had a 50/50 shot of living.”

Fortunately, Michael was treated quickly at Kennedy Hospital in Cherry Hills, N.J., which has a special program that’s reduced deaths from sepsis. 

… Michael says he’s completely recovered now and doesn’t know where he picked up the sepsis. While commonly linked to hospital infections, the CDC says 80 percent of sepsis cases happen outside hospital settings.”

Michael Bergers was a fortunate man.  But every year in this country hundreds of thousands of Americans aren’t nearly as fortunate. 

History of the Use of Colloidal Silver

in Sepsis and Septicemia

Michael Bergers wasn’t treated with colloidal silver.  However, in the early days of colloidal silver usage, thousands of sepsis victims were indeed successfully treated with various forms of antimicrobial silver. 

For example, according to a 1901 entry in the Journal of the American Medical Association (volume 36, page 252, January 26, 1901), “Silver…has been successfully employed in many forms of general sepsis."

And according to a 1901 entry in The American Journal of Medical Sciences (volume 121, page 605) titled “Colloidal Silver as a Specific”: 

"Dr. P. Viett advocates the use of colloidal silver as an efficient means of combating sepsis. He reports a number of illustrative cases, all resulting favorably. Should his results be substantiated, a distinct advance step in therapeutics can be recorded….

In two severe toxemic cases of scarlet fever and in one of diphtheria favorable results followed promptly after the introduction of the treatment. The results were equally striking in two patients suffering apparently from acute appendicitis. Three patients suffering from puerperal sepsis recovered.

From his experience in the twenty cases reported, the author is led to believe that as an effective agent against various pyogenic organisms colloidal silver should be regarded as taking first place, and that the results are certainly encouraging that an internal antiseptic has been made practicable."

According to Dr. J. Roberts Deering, M.D., writing in a 1901 edition of the Southern Practitioner (vol. 23, page 21) about other practitioners who had begun employing colloidal silver in their fight against infections that were turning septic:

“Crede claimed that the Colloidal Silver has a very beneficial influence and often effects a rapid cure in recent and chronic sepsis and furunculosis, when secondary changes in the vital organs have not occurred.

He and others have treated osteomyelitis, phlegmonous angina, furunculosis, erysipelas, so-called gonorrhoeal and articular rheumatism, etc., by this method.

Various reports, some very enthusiastic, have been presented ; on puerperal fever, cerebrospinal meningitis, acute mastitis, malignant scarlet fever, divers septic processes, furunculosis, and finally in purpura in the horse).

Wilcox's own experience in septic phlebitis, of which an unusually large percentage has occurred in his typhoid fever cases, has been most satisfactory …In one instance of septic phlebitis following amoebic dysentery the results were almost marvelous."

According to Dr. John Zahorsky, M.D., writing in the May 6, 1899 issue of Medical Review, in an article titled “The Therapeutic Value of Soluble Silver”:

“Crede states that he has had no deaths from sepsis in his surgical hospital since the introduction of silver salts and colloidal silver.

There seems, therefore to be quite a large number of clinical cases reported to induce the clinician to give this medicament a trial.

It is stated that eight to twelve hours after the inunction the temperature falls and all symptoms of sepsis become ameliorated."

(In several of the above cases, an ointment or oil containing a very strong solution of colloidal silver or a silver salt similar to silver citrate was actually rubbed forcefully into the skin in order to induce silver absorption throughout the body.  Learn more, here.)

According to a January, 1900 issue of the Albany Medical Annals (volume 21, no. 1):

“This 'colloidal silver' is almost entirely soluble in water and albuminous fluids, and apparently hinders the development of and destroys certain pathogenic germs, viz., staphylo and streptococci, to such an extent as to very often effect a rapid and absolutely surprising cure in recent cases, and also in chronic ones, such as slow sepsis and furunculosis, where secondary changes of vital organs, such as abscesses, or gangrene, have not occurred.”

In other words, as long as silver was introduced into the body before the function of vital organs was seriously affected, it appeared to stop the developing sepsis in its tracks. 

While most of this fascinating history regarding the use of antimicrobial silver in fighting sepsis is long forgotten, a 1995 issue of the Journal of Industrial Microbiology (15, 372-376) affirmed silver’s long, historical use against sepsis, stating:

 “Silver has been known for years for its broad spectrum antimicrobial properties. Colloidal silver was used in wound anti-sepsis and in combination with citrate salts for skin infections."

In the 1990’s, biochemist James South, MA, also confirmed silver’s long history of use against various forms of sepsis, stating:

"From 1900 to the beginning of the modern antibiotic era - circa 1940 with the introduction of sulfa drugs - silver was one of the mainstays of medical practice in Europe and America. Various forms of Silver were used to treat literally hundreds of ailments…[including] various forms of septicemia, including puerperal fever, peritonitis and post-abortion septicemia.”

Silver Against Sepsis

More recently, according to Dr. Kent Holtorf, Holtorf Medical Group, writing in a white paper titled "Safety and Efficacy of Intravenous Oligodynamic Silver," various forms of silver are still used to help prevent or fight active cases of sepsis and septicemia:

“Silver sulfadiazine is used for the treatment of burns and to prevent sepsis or bacterial infection in severe burns.

Silver formulations have also been used in hundreds of various infections and other conditions including pneumonia, tuberculosis, STD's, eczema, meningitis, erysipelas, Mediterranean fever, corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis and septicemia."

      

British clinical researcher Richard J White, writing in the August 3, 2001 issue of the British Journal of Community Nursing (pp 3-8), advocates for the topical use of silver wound dressings in order to prevent sepsis from taking place in wounds that have been colonized by bacteria, or even in cases where they’ve been critically colonized and infection is setting in.  He writes that silver’s long history as an anti-sepsis agent bears out its usefulness in helping prevent modern-day cases of sepsis:

“There is now a rationale for the judicious use of suitable topical anti-sepsis in certain colonized, critically colonized, and infected wounds.

The increasing evidence available on products containing silver suggests that this element can fulfil a valuable role in wound care.”

Various online reports explain that since 2004 microbial-contaminated or infected catheters have been a major source of hospital-acquired infections responsible for up to 40% of all episodes of sepsis in acute-care hospitals.

For this reason catheters coated with silver nanoparticles are now being touted as being “important to confer antimicrobial activity and play an essential part in the prevention of catheter-related infections.”

Indeed, according to a clinical overview titled “Silver Nanoparticles Interactions with the Immune System:  Implications for Health and Disease, “The released silver is active against microorganisms with no risk of systemic toxicity and safety of use in animals. This suggests that catheters coated with this method could provide local protection against infections (Roe et al., 2008).”

In other words, by using silver-impregnated catheters, microbial contamination is dramatically reduced, along with risk of infection and the resulting sepsis induced by such hospital-acquired infections.

Finally, according to a 2008 clinical report titled “Colloidal silver for lung disease in cystic fibrosis,” published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine: “An American study has shown benefits for silver in the treatment of Burkholderia dolosa infection in a murine model of severe lung sepsis.” 

As you can see, colloidal silver and other forms of silver have been used since the early 1900s, and are still being used in certain circumstances to this very day in the treatment and prevention of sepsis and septicemia. 

As biochemist James South, MA, related in an article published in the April/May 1999 issue of the Anti-Aging Bulletin (Vol. 4, Issue 3):

"The most amazing case of colloidal silver usage which I've had personal knowledge involved an 83 year old woman who was suffering severe septicemia (infectious blood poisoning). Her doctors were unable to control the raging infection and had sent her home, expecting her death in 48-72 hours.

Her husband contacted an intermediary, through whom I recommended trying colloidal silver. The woman was immediately put on one tablespoon of 5 ppm colloidal silver three times daily. Within 24 hours her septicemia began to disappear, and within 48 hours her septicemic crisis was over, and she did not die as expected."

Colloidal Silver versus the New Airborne Superbugs

I’ve written in the past about the hidden reason the world is now in such a titanic battle against antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

But the bottom line is that some 80% of all antibiotic drugs being produced today – an astonishing 17 million pounds of them -- are not being given to humans to fight infections.  Instead, they’re being given to farm animals like cattle, sheep, pigs and even fish and chickens. 

Worse yet, they’re not even being given to the animals to protect them from infection.  They’re being given to the animals in order to fatten them up faster so they can get the meat to market quicker and make more money.

You see, when antibiotics are given to farm animals on a regular, ongoing basis, it negatively affects their metabolism, causing them to start putting on weight very quickly. 

This allows Big Agriculture to make literally billions of dollars more in profits every year, because the animals grow faster, and the big corporate farming operations can get the meat from these antibiotic-drenched animals to market faster than ever before. 

But as a result of this massive (and quite unethical) overuse of antibiotics in farm animals, farms are now becoming huge repositories for drug-resistant pathogens. 

And meat from those farms, which is sold in your local supermarket, is often contaminated with low levels of antibiotic drugs, which you, in turn, eat whenever you have meat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. 

This low-level ingestion of antibiotic drugs on an ongoing basis kills off the weaker pathogens in your body, leaving only the hardiest and most virulent of pathogens alive. 

These pathogens then mutate, becoming even more resistant to common antibiotics.  And if you end up infected, prescription antibiotics drugs won’t work.

Now They’ve Gone Airborne

But as Time magazine has reported in their March 2015 news article “Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria From Texas Cattle Yards Are Now Airborne, Study Finds,” there’s now another way the drug-resistant superbugs can infect you. 

The superbugs can travel on air currents from the big corporate farming operations where they’re most concentrated, to your home, where you can get infected simply from breathing them into your lungs.    

Indeed, not only are the superbugs that thrive on the big corporate farming operations becoming airborne, but they’re able to travel extremely long distances simply by hitchhiking a ride on the wind currents.

As stated in Time magazine:

“A new study says the DNA from antibiotic-resistant bacteria found in American cattle yards has become airborne, creating a new pathway by which such bacteria can potentially spread to humans and hinder treatment of life-threatening infections.”

The Time magazine article goes on to say:

“Because antibiotics are poorly absorbed by cows, they are released into the environment through excretion.

Once in the environment, bacteria will undergo natural selection and genes that have acquired natural immunities will survive.

The genes that have gone airborne are contained in dried fecal matter that has become dust and gets picked up by winds as they whip through the stockyards.”

Indeed, one of the authors of the new study characterizes the findings as being so frightening, “…it made me not want to breathe.” 

According to the clinical study Time magazine reported on, the superbugs and their mutated genes can then travel hundreds of miles on the wind currents to major cities, where they can then be picked up by people and further spread throughout the population.

This is quite possibly one of the main reasons why so-called “community acquired” superbug infections are now beginning to overtake hospital-acquired superbug infections. 

While hospitals are now using intensive disinfection to keep the superbug populations lower, the superbugs from animal stockyards are spreading into the communities themselves through the air, quite literally hitch-hiking rides upon the breeze. 

Colloidal Silver to the Rescue

Of course, it’s been known since the 1970’s that silver kills even the most resistant of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.  As Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. wrote in 1977,

“What we have done was rediscover the fact that silver kills bacteria, a fact which had actually been known for centuries ...

…All of the organisms we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics...In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.”

Clinical Study #1:  Colloidal Silver Kills up to 99.7% of Six Multidrug-resistant Superbugs! 

In this fascinating clinical study titled “Bactericidal Effect of Silver Nanoparticles Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria,” published in the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology in 2010, it was found that antimicrobial silver killed up to 99.7% of drug-resistant bacteria, including some of the most virulent multidrug-resistant strains. 

The study authors stated:  “In our study, antimicrobial silver nanoparticles exerted a bactericidal effect against six drug-resistant bacterial strains… the same nanosilver concentration inhibited 99.7% of erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes, 95.7% of ampicillin-resistant E. coli and 92.8% of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa.” 

The researchers further concluded that silver exhibited bactericidal effect rather than merely bacteriostatic effect.  That’s extremely good news, because it means the use of antimicrobial silver is so effective against drug-resistant strains, it outright kills them rather than merely inhibiting their growth!

Clinical Study #2:  Colloidal Silver Kills Antibiotic- resistant Staph, E. Coli, Pseudomonas andSalmonella!

In this ground-breaking clinical study, titled “Colloidal Silver as a New Antimicrobial Agent,” published in the respected International Journal of Microbiological Research in 2010, the researchers demonstrated that colloidal silver effectively decimated antibiotic-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi.

The researchers concluded:

“Resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi were used as the test organisms.  This study demonstrated powerful antimicrobial activity of colloidal silver against all multidrug-resistant clinical pathogens tested.”

Clinical Study #3:  Colloidal Silver Kills 49 Different Strains of Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs! 

In this most recent clinical study titled “The Antimicrobial Efficacy of Silver on Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Burn Wounds,” conducted by researchers at the Department of Pathology at West Virginia University, and published in the International Wound Journal in October 2012, a total of 49 different antibiotic-resistant bacteria were isolated from burn wounds and tested against silver.  

These deadly, drug-resistant pathogens included Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, multidrug-resistant Vibrio sp, drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia, drug-resistant Escherichia coli, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacterbaumannii and 42 others.

After exposing these drug-resistant pathogens to antimicrobial silver the researchers concluded, “…all forty-nine antibiotic-resistant bacteria showed susceptibility to the antimicrobial activity of silver…” 

As you can see, there’s hardly a superbug in existence that hasn’t been demonstrated by clinical research to be sensitive to antimicrobial silver.  And that includes the deadly MRSA pathogen that infects some 94,000 Americans each year and kills a whopping 20% of them!
