Another “Health Guru” Mindlessly Trashes Nanosilver

It’s sad when people you can normally rely on for accurate information on healthy natural living fall for the propaganda against antimicrobial silver being dished out by the radical, anti-silver environmentalists. 

But it’s happened more times in the past than I care to remember.  And I believe that’s largely because we all want to be environmentally conscientious.  But when the environmentalists are flat-out lying about a subject like antimicrobial silver, you have to set aside personal loyalties to cherished concepts, and look instead at the raw facts. 

And hopefully, if you set the facts out nice and straight, so people can see them, then the people being taken in by the rank sensationalism against antimicrobial silver will see the error of their ways and turn a new page.  Here’s one such case I’m hoping the best for…

I’ve had a number of readers ask me what I thought of an article titled “Invisible Toxins in Food Can Damage Your Health,” written by a gentleman named Jonathan Landsman, which was published on the usually reliable NaturalHealth365.com website.

Mr. Landsman, blamed “silver nanoparticles” for just about all of the world’s ills.  So I think most readers who have been with me for any length of time already know how I feel about that topic.

Nevertheless, I’ve read Mr. Landsman’s article, and for the sake of those who might be new to the “silver wars,” I’m happy to dissect it for you here, at least in part, if you’re interested in hearing my viewpoint on the matter.

If the Foundation is Shaky…

The very first thing we see in Mr. Landsman’s article is this scary statement: 

“You can’t see, smell or taste them – but over the last few years silver nanoparticles have been added to our food supply (and medications) at an alarming rate. 

Like me, I’m sure you’re wondering why would food producers – and the pharmaceutical industry – place silver in their products?”

So what’s the problem with this statement?  There’s not a word of truth in it.  That’s what.  Nobody’s putting silver in the food supply.  And nobody’s putting silver in your pharmaceutical medication.   

Now, to be fair to Mr. Landsman, a small handful of researchers have indeed done clinical research on adding silver nanoparticles to prescription antibiotic drugs. 

And to answer Mr. Landsman’s second question above, the reason why these researchers would even consider doing such a thing is that the preliminary results have clearly demonstrated that adding silver to the antibiotics increased their effectiveness against pathogenic microorganisms by as much as 1,000x.

In other words, adding silver to prescription antibiotic drugs just might help solve the growing crisis of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.  That’s because silver kills microbes in such a manner that very few of them can become resistant to it. 

Here’s how it works: 

Whereas prescription antibiotic drugs merely poison the microbes (which they can mutate to avoid), silver actually bursts the microbes outer membrane, destroys its ability to create energy (in essence, shutting down its metabolism) and then finally attaches to its DNA which prevents it from replicating. 

But this relatively new research is only in the preliminary stage, and adding silver to prescription medications has, to my knowledge, never been approved by the Food & Drug Administration.  So the pharmaceutical industry is not piling silver into our medications as Mr. Landsman so strongly insists.

Finally (and I’m still only talking about Mr. Landsman’s very first paragraph, here), his shrill claim that nanosilver is being “added to our food supply” is equally erroneous.

I’ve already destroyed the idea that food producers are adding silver to foods, in my previous article “Evil Silver Nanoparticles Invading Your Fruits and Veggies?” 

Once again, it’s true that some researchers have done preliminary research into the use of nanosilver on food crops as a means of eradicating pathogens that cause billions of dollars worth of crop loss every year, and cause tens of thousands of cases of food poisoning as well.

Researchers also want to know whether or not silver can be used as a safe, non-toxic natural substitute for the toxic synthetic chemicals used by farmers today to eradicate pathogens before they can destroy crop growth. 

But just as adding silver to prescription antibiotic medications is only in the preliminary research stage and has never been approved, so the use of nanosilver on food crops is only in the preliminary research stage as well.  And it, too, has never been approved by the regulatory authorities.  There’s still a lot more research to do. 


Interestingly, this preliminary research into using nanosilver on food crops to help stop pathogen growth has shown some very promising results, including reduced fungal loads on crop plants, and larger, healthier crops.

So there’s no nanosilver whatsoever being “added to our food supply (and medications) at an alarming rate” as Mr. Landsman asserts.  Indeed, the only thing “alarming” about this topic is Mr. Landsman’s sensationalistic rhetoric. 

Listen:  Whenever the foundation is shaky, you have to suspect the rest of the house will be shaky too.  Mr. Landsman’s house of erroneous information on nanosilver is extremely shaky, indeed.

Landsman goes on to say “Consuming silver nanoparticles is a bad idea…scientific research warns us that uptake of these tiny particles can cause cellular damage, kidney disorders, stomach upset, headaches, fatigue and skin irritation.

The interesting thing, so far, is that not a single one of Mr. Landsman’s claims are backed up with even a smidgeon of reliable clinical documentation. 

Instead of producing clinical research to back up his claims, Landsman instead provides links to equally sensationalist articles spouting equally spurious “facts” about nanosilver.

So what do the real experts say about silver intake?

As stated in a position paper on silver by the Dartmouth University Toxic Metals Research Program: 

"Trace amounts of silver are in the bodies of all humans and animals. We normally take in between 70 and 88 micrograms of silver a day, half of that amount from our diet.

Humans have evolved with efficient methods of dealing with that intake, however. Over 99 percent is readily excreted from the body.

Is silver harmful to humans?

Unlike other metals such as lead and mercury, silver is not toxic to humans and is not known to cause cancer, reproductive or neurological damage, or other chronic adverse effects."

And as Britain's foremost expert on silver, researcher Alan Lansdown (not to be confused with our intrepid Mr. Landsman), has pointed out on many occasions, the idea that silver intake results in cumulative toxicity in the human body, or any form of harm to cells or tissues, is simply and decidedly untrue.  He states:

“…silver is actively metabolized in the human body and a large part eliminated eventually via the liver, urine and hair...

…there is very little substantive evidence that silver acts either as a cumulative poison in the human body like lead and mercury, or that it reaches toxic levels in any tissue...”

Truly, Mr. Landsman’s claims are little more than rank sensationalism, mostly copied from the websites of anti-silver environmentalists who still to this day claim that nanosilver is causing global warming and “killing the planet.” 

Problem is, nanosilver has been on this planet a whole lot longer than the human race.  And humans are mere pikers when it comes to producing nanosilver. 

The seas, for example, naturally contain tons upon tons upon tons of trace silver (and these same seas thrive with every form of life you can imagine in spite of all of that “evil” silver).  And the earth’s surface naturally contains tons more trace silver. 

Indeed, the stuff is absolutely ubiquitous throughout the earth.  That’s because, as research scientists have recently discovered, “Mother Earth” makes her own nanosilver, without any help at all from we mere humans. 

Where Does He Get His Facts?

So where does Mr. Landsman get all of his “facts”? 

It appears to me that 99% of Landsman’s material on nanosilver is taken right out of the playbook of extremist, neo-Luddite anti-silver environmentalists who have been shrieking for years now that silver is “destroying the environment” in spite of the fact that silver comes from the environment in the first place, and pervades the environment naturally.

I’ve written many times in the past about the deceitful and sensationalistic ways the anti-silver environmentalists try to trash all forms of antimicrobial silver (while taking millions of dollars per year in donations from charitable foundations set up by Big Pharma).   

The environmentalists claim, for example, that there are studies demonstrating that silver harms animals.  And Landsman parrots that claim in his article, saying “Animals treated with silver nanoparticles exhibited reduced cognitive/motor functions and altered cellular structures in the brain.” 

But where’s the clinical documentation for this very serious charge? 

Once again, the only documentation provided are links to other sensationalistic articles written by silver-bashing environmentalists.  Clinical studies are not provided, because if they were, we’d be able to read them and see the glaring faults contained in them. 

You see, there simply isn’t any credible clinical documentation for these claims.  On the contrary, every decent animal study I’ve ever seen on nanosilver has demonstrated no harm whatsoever to the animals even at extremely large dosages.

For example, here’s an article about a 2012 clinical study which showed no harm whatsoever to animals, even when they were exposed to well above-moderate doses of nanosilver.

And here’s another article on a recent study on silver nanoparticles, showing that when the silver was administered to animals even at an astonishingly high 5,000 ppm there was still no harm to the animals.

Even when the Environmental Protection Agency studied silver’s effects on pregnant rats that were being tube-fed a caustic form of silver known as silver acetate, they couldn’t find any lasting harm to the animals. 

“In a developmental toxicity study of pregnant rats conducted in 2002 by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), silver acetate was administered by gavage [tube-feeding – ED] on days 6-19 of gestation.

No developmental effects were reported at doses up to 100 mg/kg…

…More importantly, the results from this study did not demonstrate an increased susceptibility of offspring, nor did it demonstrate systemic toxicity.”

So, silver didn’t appear to harm the development of baby rats, even though it was being tube-fed directly into the mother rats for 13 days during gestation.

A Little Bit Fruity?

Landsman also parrots additional false information from the so-called “silver nanoparticle fruit study,” which, as I mentioned earlier, I’ve already written extensively about at this link

As you’ll see when you read my article at the above link, the entire “study” on alleged nanosilver in fruit was a red herring.  No nanosilver was ever found in commercially sold fruit. 

Instead, the researchers purchased some fruit and then soaked it in nanosilver themselves.  Afterwards, they used a new technique to detect the presence of the silver in the fruit. 

The radical, anti-silver environmentalists then seized upon this study and wrote numerous articles about it, claiming the study showed that our fruits and veggies are teaming with nanosilver that’s being added by farmers.  But the study showed no such thing. 

The way the study was interpreted and touted by dozens of environmentalist writers was a sensationalistic “sky-is-falling” fabrication from start to finish, designed by said environmentalists to smear nanosilver as a “toxin” that’s “invading our fruits and vegetables,” when there’s absolutely no evidence of any such thing, anywhere

Indeed, the entire “nanosilver in your fruits and veggies” story was, in my opinion, knowingly concocted and spread by anti-silver environmentalists who knew in advance that not a word they were saying was true. 

Landsman goes on to claim that “Many food packing materials incorporate silver nanoparticles to prolong the shelf life of packaged foods.  The nano material has been known to transfer to the food – inside the package.” 

Please name even one of these “food packing materials” that incorporates silver nanoparticles into its makeup.  I’d be particularly interested to know of any that are in use commercially, right now, and that the average person would come into contact with through food purchased through a normal retail food outlet. 

Can’t name any?  Neither can I.  That’s because, under pressure from the radical anti-silver environmental groups who repeatedly sue the EPA every time they try to approve a consumer product containing antimicrobial nanosilver, the vast majority of these products have long ago been pulled from the market.  So this ominous “threat” is virtually non-existent.

But I’ll tell you something:  If I could actually find any of these “food packaging materials” that supposedly have nanosilver incorporated into their makeup, I’d buy them and use them. 

Why?  Because food poisoning – which sickens 48 million people per year in the U.S., and kills thousands of them – is a far more insidious threat to human health than nanosilver could ever be.

Worse yet, recent studies have demonstrated that over 50% of all store-bought meats are now contaminated with potentially deadly MRSA bacteria.  While MRSA does not cause food poisoning, it does infect some 39,000 people in the U.S. every year, and has a death rate higher than AIDS.


Indeed, as I’ve discussed repeatedly in the past (see “In Defense of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles:  It’s Time to Kick Some Environmentalist Butt”) nanosilver is the answer to the threat of bacterially contaminated meats.  Not the problem. 

Do Silver Nanoparticles Harm Cells?

As I’ve noted, very few of Landsman’s claims, such as the claim that silver nanoparticles “have devastating effects on cell survival” have any documentation whatsoever. 

In reality, study after study demonstrates that silver protects human cells. 

For example, see my previous article, “NanoSilver Prevents Blood Clots; Doesn't Harm Cells,” about a recent study demonstrating that nanosilver not only prevents blood clots, but causes no harm to human cells whatsoever.

Also, see this older clinical study, “Effects of Electrically Generated Silver Ions on Human Cells and Wound Healing,” in which the researchers demonstrate how tiny, electrically generated silver particles stimulate cells to begin the healing process in serious wounds and open infections.

And finally, see this clinical study, “Topical Delivery of Silver Nanoparticles Promotes Wound Healing,” in which researchers document how silver nanoparticles promote wound healing on the cellular level and protect cells from the damage that would normally be caused by excessive cytokine expression in wounds.

So where do the environmentalists get this crap when they claim silver harms cells? 

They get it from studies conducted by other radical, anti-silver environmentalists who take lab-grown human cells and put them in a test tube, and then soak them in such high concentrations of nanosilver as to guarantee negative results.

For an example of how blatantly this is done, see the very misleading study I dissect in my previous article, “Flawed Study Says Colloidal Silver Toxic to Human Cells.”   

Naturally, the study authors could have taken the same human cells and soaked them in high concentrations of orange juice, or coffee, or vinegar, or even distilled water and gotten the same exact negative results.

That’s because any time you take human cells out of their biological environment, put them in a test tube and soak them in overly-high concentrations of a substance for dozens of hours, you’re going to be able to document harm to those cells. It’s inevitable.

But that’s the kind of trickery and chicanery the anti-silver environmentalists resort to.  They can’t demonstrate that commercial products containing silver have ever harmed anyone’s cells, in the past 120 years since nanosilver was first produced by humans.   So they engineer a study and rig it to demonstrate harm. 

If you read the above-linked article, you’ll be shocked to see what lengths these guys go to in order to smear antimicrobial silver. 

One More Myth Bites the Dust

Finally, Mr. Landsman states that “Observations, in laboratory animals, have shown that the uptake of these particles – in the digestive tract – can change the terrain. The digestive tract harbors beneficial bacteria along with pathogenic bacteria. Silver nanoparticles can wipe out the ‘good bacteria’ along with toxic ones.”

Yes, it’s true.  Silver is indeed unable to distinguish between good digestive bacteria and pathogenic bacteria.  As I’ve pointed out here and here, silver is an equal opportunity antimicrobial substance.  And therefore excessive use of silver should be eschewed, if you want to protect your body’s beneficial digestive micro-flora. 

However, as I pointed out last week in my article “Debunking ‘Why I Never Consume Colloidal Silver’,” the exact same thing can be said about virtually all natural antimicrobial substances – including many that have been recommended repeatedly on Mike Adam’s NaturalNews.com (one of my favorite websites), which Mr. Landsman apparently works with.

In other words, natural antimicrobials like garlic, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, cayenne pepper and many others ALL have one thing in common:  like colloidal silver, they too cannot distinguish between our body’s beneficial digestive bacteria and infection-causing pathogens.  

Yet these natural substances are all highly touted by natural health gurus like Mr. Landsman.  And one of the reasons they’re so highly touted is because they pose far less risk to the body’s beneficial microbes than prescription antibiotic drugs

So the same is just as true for silver as it is for garlic, oregano oil, or any other natural antimicrobial.  As I point out in the article at the above link, very little ingested silver ever makes it into the large and small intestines where the vast majority of one’s three and a half to seven pounds worth of beneficial microflora reside. 

That’s because mineral silver – just like garlic, grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, cayenne pepper and other natural antimicrobial substances – is treated by the body as nutrition, whereas antibiotic drugs are not. 

And even when some mineral silver does make it into the intestinal tract, of which the average human adult has some 28 feet worth with virtually every square centimeter absolutely teaming with billions of beneficial digestive microbes, there’s very little chance of it harming enough of the good bacteria to put a significant dent in the population, unless ungodly, egregiously high levels of silver have been consumed.

The human digestive tract actually contains more microbes than the human body has cells.  Think about that for a moment.  Yes, in terms of individual microbes, versus individual cells, we’re actually more microbe than “human” in makeup. 

So while overuse of prescription antibiotic drugs – which acts as a whole-body “poison” to microbes, good and bad alike -- may well be able to wipe out large portions of our body’s beneficial micro-flora, natural mineral antimicrobial substances like silver and natural plant-based antimicrobial substances like garlic, oregano oil, etc., have never been known to do so when used within normal bounds.

Again, this goes for all natural antimicrobial substances.  They all have the potential to kill some of our body’s beneficial microbes when used.  But they’re all far safer to use than prescription antibiotic drugs, in that regard, as long as they’re used within common-sense boundaries.

You have to balance the risks versus the rewards.  And with natural antimicrobials – including mineral silver – the risks are relatively low and the rewards relatively high, compared to the toxic effects of prescription antibiotic drugs.

So to single out silver as some kind of dire threat to our body’s populations of beneficial digestive microbes is at best, deceptive, and at the very least disingenuous, in my view. 

No Big Surprise

None of the tirades against silver which you’ve seen over the past few years should surprise you.  Silver has long been in the cross hairs of Big Pharma.  They’ve long wanted to patent it, and monopolize its use for themselves, while restricting the public’s access to its antimicrobial properties. 

So they use their minions in the environmentalist movement (who take millions of dollars in contributions from Big Pharma charitable foundations) to ruthlessly propagandize against silver, so the average Joe won’t have access to it in the form of antimicrobial consumer products.

In conclusion, it’s very sad to see that Mr. Landsman has fallen for this environmentalist clap-trap, when it’s so easily debunked. 

Since he’s an ardent proponent of natural healthy living, and since he appears to be associated with one of my heroes, Mike Adams of NaturalNews.com, I hope he’ll do some additional research (some of the links in this article would be good places to start) and eventually see the light.  

I’d like to point out that I do agree – wholeheartedly, in fact – with Mr. Landsman’s advice that where food is involved, we should all buy locally grown foods whenever possible, and that organic meats and produce are best, because they’re least likely to be treated with toxins, drugs, and other undesirable chemicals.  On that topic, Mr. Landsman and myself are of the same heart and mind.

Can Pathogens Develop Resistance to Antimicrobial Silver?


Radical environmentalists claim that antimicrobial silver used in commercial products to prevent the spread of germs will eventually seep into the environment and cause pathogens to grow resistant to it, much as pathogens have become resistant to many modern-day antibiotic drugs.

Therefore, the use of silver in commercial products urgently needs to be banned, the environmentalists say, because its presence in such products will ultimately usher in a new era of powerful, disease-causing microbes that will be virtually unstoppable.

Can this possibly be true? Or is it just another example of anti-silver sensationalism?

Do the radical environmentalists have any valid evidence for their shrill claims that we’ll soon be facing an infectious disease apocalypse thanks to the use of antimicrobial silver in commercial products?

Quite the opposite.

Indeed, it is more likely we’ll be facing an infectious disease apocalypse if we fail to increase the use of antimicrobial silver in commercial products.

The idea that pathogens will eventually grow resistant to silver en masse and become immune to its powerful infection-fighting qualities is just rank speculation and propagandistic sensationalism –

– designed to scare the wits out of an already overwhelmed American public being faced with uncountable infectious diseases and related health challenges.

So what does real science say about the potential for creating silver-resistance in pathogenic microbes?

According to Lucian Lucia, associate professor of chemistry at North Carolina State University, and chemist George John of City College of New York, bacteria cannot build up a resistance to silver nanoparticles as they can to antibiotics, because of the way the silver nanoparticle attacks — destroying the structure of the cells and killing them.

Antibiotics, on the other hand, suppress the activity of bacteria but don’t necessarily kill them. “That’s the beauty of silver,” Lucia says. “There’s no way to develop a serious resistance to it.”

Writing in the journal BioMetals in 1998, in a study titled “Multiple Parameters for the Comprehensive Evaluation of the Susceptibility of Escherichia coli to the Silver Ion,” researchers G. Zhao, and S.E. Stevens stated:

“With the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, silver is re-emerging as a modern medicine because pathogenic organisms have generally failed to develop an immunity to it (i.e., the silver ion).”

According to researcher AB Lansdown, writing in the Journal of Wound Care, April 2002:

“Silver products have two key advantages: they are broad-spectrum antibiotics and are not yet associated with any significant drug resistance.”

According to researcher A. Dwight Webster, writing in Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, in a study titled “Silver Anode Treatment of Chronic Osteomyelitis”:

"The silver cation is known to have an exceptionally broad spectrum involving gram-positive, gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms… resistance to silver ions is rare."

According to Herbert Slavin, M.D., founder and director of the Institute of Advanced Medicine, Lauderhill, Florida:

“Reports of any pathogens developing resistance to ionic silver are rare. Some reports indicate it even kills drug-resistant strains of germs. Ionic silver is also a powerful tissue-healing agent, so much so that it has been used topically for decades in burn centers and currently represents one of the fastest growing sectors – if not the fastest growing sector – in wound care today.”

And according to Steve Thomas, PhD, Director Surgical Materials Testing Laboratory Bridgend, Wales, UK, in an article titled, “MRSA and the use of silver dressings: overcoming bacterial resistance”:

“Although some bacteria can develop resistance to silver, this is not regarded as a serious problem as available evidence suggests that most preparations capable of delivering sustained silver-ion release are effective against MRSA and VRE, and as yet no resistant strains have been encountered clinically.

It follows, therefore, that any silver-containing dressing that shows acceptable levels of activity against a range of non-resistant bacterial species should show comparable activity against antibiotic-resistant strains of the same organism.”

As stated by silver researcher S.M. Foran, writing in Therapeutic Properties of Silver: an Historical and Technical Review:

"Another benefit to using silver is that it does not appear to create the same amount of resistance in bacteria as traditional antibiotics.

Ian Chopra, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Leeds, reported in a 2007 article in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy that there are fewer than twenty published reports of silver resistance in bacteria.

Professor Chopra went on to indicate that 'current evidence suggests the clinical threat [due to silver resistance] is low' because of the 'multifaceted mode of action of the silver ion.'’

Silver’s Multi-Faceted Mode of Action

You see, unlike antibiotic drugs which generally kill pathogens through a single course of action, silver works in a multi-faceted manner, attacking infectious microorganisms from many different angles.

Therefore, it is very difficult and extremely rare for pathogens to become “resistant” to silver.
Generally speaking, if one facet of silver’s antimicrobial arsenal fails to work on a specific pathogen, another facet will do the job handily.

Infectious disease specialist Dr. David Weber agrees, arguing that the use of silver in commercial products poses very little danger of creating silver-resistant microbes, due to silver’s multiple modes of operation.

As reported in the Los Angeles Times, in August of 2008:

“…Dr. David Weber, an infectious disease and public health expert at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, isn't convinced that silver resistance will prove much of a problem.
Resistance to antibiotics occurs quite readily in bacteria once prolonged exposure to, say, penicillin, occurs. But there's little reason to suppose that resistance to silver would develop so easily, he says.
An antibiotic like penicillin works by hitting a bacterium in a limited fashion, at specific sites. Because the killing is done precisely, the bacterium has a good chance of developing a mutation that would confer resistance.

In contrast, silver kills microbes in a broad, unspecific fashion -- like tossing a bomb at a bacterium. It hits many essential points such as a bacterium's entire respiratory system. This makes it much more difficult for silver-resistance to develop.

And even if tolerance did develop, Weber says, increasing the dose of silver the bacterium is exposed to will solve the problem in most cases.”

In short, microbes simply don’t grow resistant to silver anywhere near as easily as they do to synthetic antibiotic drugs, thanks in large part to silver’s broad spectrum of action.

And even if a microbe does grow resistant to silver, increasing the dosage tends to take care of the problem!

Can Pathogens Become Silver-Resistant Due to Prolonged Exposure to Silver?

That’s not to say there are no cases whatsoever of silver-resistant microbes. Indeed, there are a small handful of cases.

But out of the 20,000 catalogued pathogens in existence (and millions more that remain uncatalogued), only a very few have been found to be silver-resistant.

In fact, only about 20 pathogens have demonstrated an ability to develop silver resistance, and then, only to varying degrees.

According to the Immunogenic Research Foundation, these include sub-species of the following 20 pathogens, which have been shown to “exhibit various degrees of resistance to the bactericidal effects of silver-based drugs”:

1. Acinetobacter baumani
2. Citrobacter freundii
3. Entamoeba histolytica cysts
4. Enterobacter cloacae
5. Enterobacteriaceae
6. Enterococcus hiraea
7. Escherichia coli
8. Helicobacter pylori
9. Klebsiella pneumoniae
10. Mycobacteria
11. Pseudomonas aeruginosa,
12. E. cloacae
13. Ps. stutzeri
14. Ps. putida
14. Proteus mirabilis
16. Salmonella typhimurium
17. Staphylococcus aureus
18. Thiobacillus ferro-oxidans
19. Thiobacillus thio-oxidans
20. Vegetative B. Cereus Spores

In each case above, only some sub-species of the pathogens listed appear to be able to develop resistance to silver’s antimicrobial qualities.

And again, it is important to note that only varying degrees of resistance have been demonstrated in clinical studies.

In other words, few if any of these strains have demonstrated an ability to become completely resistant to silver. This means switching to a more powerful form of silver, or simply increasing the dosage of silver, will generally kill these “silver-resistant” sub-species.

This extremely rare resistance to silver is the basis of most of the shrill cries by the radical anti-silver environmentalists who claim the use of silver in commercial products will usher in an environmental apocalypse coupled with a new dark age of infectious illness and disease.

Should This Be Any Surprise?

Should it be any surprise that in some rare cases, a sub-species or strain of pathogenic microorganism has demonstrated at least some small resistance to the antimicrobial qualities of silver?

Of course not. No more so that it should be a surprise to find that some rare species of fish can survive out of water for long periods of time, and others can crawl out of the water and walk across dry land.

Nature is just like that. Nothing follows the rules 100% of the time. And no antimicrobial substance on the face of the earth is 100% effective every time it’s used.

For example, generally speaking, silver-based antimicrobials are highly effective against many strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, a potentially deadly pathogen that is frequently picked up by surgical patients in hospitals, and is often resistant to Big Pharma’s antibiotic drugs.

But at least one sub-species of Klebsiella has been demonstrated in laboratory studies to become resistant to silver, too, after being exposed to it multiple times.

What researchers did was expose a test tube colony of the pathogen, grown in a saline nutrient broth, to small amounts of silver -- just enough to kill off the weaker pathogens in the colony.

Then they repeated the process, each time adding a tiny bit more silver than the last. By the time they did this multiple times (11 separate times in the study I read, going by memory), the remaining pathogens appeared to be silver-resistant.

This was a test-tube study, of course. But it nevertheless demonstrates the possibility that a subspecies of Klebsiella can actually become silver-resistant under the right conditions of repeated exposure to a silver-based product.

But, that’s not the whole story. It’s just the small part of the story the radical anti-silver environmentalists want you to hear when they moan and groan about silver’s use in commercial products. The rest of the story actually puts the lie to the environmentalist’s senstationalistic claims.
Here’s what researcher L.K. Gupta, from the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, India stated regarding the silver-resistance developed by a sub-species of Klebsiella, writing in medical journal Folia Microbiologica:

A silver-resistant mutant of Klebsiella pneumoniae B-5 was produced by passaging in nutrient broth containing graded concentrations of silver nitrate up to 150 ppm.

The development of silver resistance in the strain resulted in rough colonies, decrease in cell size, carbohydrate content and change in klebocin pattern.

The virulence of the AgR strain as checked by the burn wound model decreased as the mutant could not establish itself in the skin and spleen of the animals and the organism was cleared more efficiently by human lymphocytes than the parent AgS strain.

In other words, using the B-5 strain of Klebsiella, the researchers were able to add increasingly high concentrations of silver nitrate (up to 150 ppm) until they produced a strain that was resistant to the silver.

However, the silver-resistant strain suffered from a significantly reduced cell size, and was considerably weaker in virulence (i.e., ability to cause infection) than the parent strain.

Indeed, the silver-resistant strain, though alive, could no longer establish functional infectivity in the skin and spleen of animals used in the research.

And the body’s natural immune system processes readily cleared the microbe, indicating it had been so weakened by the repeated exposure to silver that it was no longer a significant threat.

So what’s the problem? Thanks to the silver, even the pathogens that didn’t die during exposure to silver still lost their functional infectivity!

As you can see, this is hardly the stuff an impending apocalypse of silver-resistant microbes is made of.

Indeed, based upon this study a reasonable person could easily conclude that it’s simply not worth listening to the radical environmentalists who seem to cry “the sky is falling” every time a new commercial innovation involving antimicrobial silver is brought to market.

The Good News You Won’t Hear About From the Radical Environmentalists

What’s more, the good news the radical environmentalists will never tell you is this:

It is well known that certain strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae have also become resistant to Big Pharma’s antibiotic drugs. But…a whopping 75% of these antibiotic-resistant strains are stopped cold by silver-based antimicrobials!

Once again, writing in the medical journal Folia Microbiologica, researcher N. Kapoor of the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, India, states:

“Multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae were checked for their sensitivity toward silver nitrate by the tube-dilution method. Nearly 75% of MDR strains could be successfully inhibited by 5 mg/L of silver nitrate.”

In other words, the vast majority of the strains of this potentially deadly pathogen that are no longer killed by prescription antibiotic drugs have been shown to be inhibited by…(drum roll, please) antimicrobial silver!

Considering the fact that up to 40% of all victims of multiple-drug resistant Klebsiella infections die from their infections, that’s the news that should be trumpeted from the headlines of all of the science magazines and medical periodicals.

Simply put, antimicrobial silver kills most drug-resistant strains of Klebsiella!

But it’s not being trumpeted from the rooftops, because radical environmentalists have already co-opted the silver story. And they’ve decided that silver is substanta non grata – an unwanted substance – regardless of how many lives it could save!

So the real victims of this terrible twisting of the truth regarding silver’s effectiveness are the thousands of hospital patients infected by drug-resistant forms of Klebsiella every year, 40% of who end up dying of their infection when the use of silver may well have saved them!

Poorly Designed Studies

Another interesting point, according to the Immunogenic Research Foundation, is that many of the studies demonstrating silver resistance by pathogens such as Klebsiella have had some serious shortcomings and outright flaws.

First and foremost, the researchers apparently never used nanoscale oligodynamic silver (i.e., small particles of highly bioactive silver). Instead, they used silver salt compounds (such as silver nitrate), which are only mildly bioactive by comparison. So they were operating at a disadvantage from the start.

The experimental designs typically utilized silver salt compounds, which deliver poor amounts of bioactive silver,” the foundation reports in its white paper titled “Microbial Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) And Oligodynamic Silver.”

What’s more, in many cases the broth cultures in which the pathogens for these studies were grown were composed of substances (or concentrations of substances) not normal to the human body and which are widely known to negate silver’s effectiveness.

As the Immunogenic Research Foundation white paper points out:

“Another most common problem of these experimental designs was the inadvertent culture contamination with various salts, something which will reduce silver efficacy.”

In other words, some of the salts used in the broth cultures the microbes were being grown in are known to interfere with the antimicrobial effectiveness of silver. Therefore, what appeared to have been silver-resistance developed by the bacteria, was more likely the result of neutralization of the silver by the ingredients in the broth the bacteria were grown in!

The microbes didn’t grow resistant. The silver was simply robbed of its antimicrobial qualities before it could do its job.

This makes sense, since researcher N. Grier, writing in the journal of Disinfection, Sterilization and Preservation way back in 1985, pointed out in an article titled “Silver and Its Compounds” that:

“Some so-called Ag+ resistant microorganisms may result from an apparent neutralization of the metal’s inhibitory action or other assay artifacts.

These include the presence of chelators such as serial amino acids, constituents of hard water, different buffers, light, incubation temperature, and particularly, soluble components of trypticase soy agar (TSA) and tryptose glucose extract agar (TGE).”

Plus, the researcher above points out that other confounding factors such as excessive light and extreme temperatures (silver is hyper-sensitive to both light and temperature, which for example, is why silverware tarnishes) may also have played a role in de-activating the silver.

What’s more, in many cases these particular growth cultures were apparently not comparable to the biological fluids found in living tissues.

According to the white paper from the Immunogenic Research Foundation:

“The colloidal state and dynamics of living tissues is at odds with typical culture techniques and mediums, and brings about the unfortunately situation of requiring readers to compare apples to oranges.”

In other words, the research only demonstrated silver’s supposed reduction in efficacy against these pathogens under artificial laboratory conditions not relevant to typical human biological conditions.

Another Flawed Study

In another study, this time on the use of silver and copper ions in hot water plumbing systems in order to inhibit the Legionella pathogen responsible for Legionnaire’s disease, researchers also claimed to have demonstrated silver-resistance by the pathogen being studied.

But as researcher Dr. Y. Eason Lin pointed out, writing in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, Vol. 31, Issue 5, in an article titled “Ionization Failure Not Due to Resistance”:

“The claim of Rohr at al. that Legionella developed resistance to silver is unsupported by any data in their report.

However, their data do document that the failure to eradicate Legionella is likely due to insufficient copper and silver ions in the water.

A possible solution might be to increase copper ion concentration to 400 µg/L and maintain sustained copper and silver ions in the water system.”

In other words, what the study data actually showed was that levels of silver and copper ions in the water system fluctuated too much, and were generally far too low to maintain eradication of the Legionella pathogen.

The bottom line is that the conclusion drawn by radical environmentalists from these types of studies – i.e., that repeated exposure to silver by humans will result in the development of silver-resistant microbes – was not even remotely demonstrated by these studies.

According to the Immunogenic Research Foundation white paper:

“More specifically stated, the apparent resistance of microbes to silver-based drugs is typically due to:

(1) an inadequate protocol or procedure, or
(2) neglect of the necessary parameters so carefully reviewed by Goetz, Zhao and a NASA commissioned study.

Hamilton-Miller et al., have reported that bacterial strains completely resistant to the salt speciations of silver have proved erroneous when proper study designs were employed.”

In other words (and this is the real clincher), the results of many of these studies demonstrating bacterial resistance to silver nitrate and other silver salts were not duplicated when better designed studies were conducted.

This is something the radical environmentalists don’t bother to tell you when they go on their all-too-frequent tirades about the supposed dangers of silver-resistance in microbes.

Indeed, it is a typical gambit of the radical anti-silver environmentalists to use flawed studies or to exaggerate the results of studies in order to justify their sensationalistic claims against antimicrobial silver. See here and here for examples.

In Conclusion

Silver is one of the small handfuls of powerful substances nature has provided for man to extract from the environment and use against pathogens. And it has worked very effectively for thousands upon thousands of years.

It’s not perfect. It’s not “God.” But it’s extremely effective against pathogens, including viruses, and even against the emerging superpathogens such as MRSA that are resistant to Big Pharma’s most powerful antibiotic drugs.

Indeed, antimicrobial silver is exactly what’s needed in this Age of Strange Diseases in which we now live.

While more work needs to be done in developing effective protocols for the use of silver against infectious microorganisms and related disease in humans –

– there appears at this point in time to be no significant reason whatsoever to be concerned about the development of silver resistance among pathogens.

As we’ve seen above, studies purporting to demonstrate the development of silver resistance have in many cases been poorly conducted, using less bioactive forms of silver (such as silver nitrate) rather than oligodynamic silver (silver that is highly bioactive in even small amounts).

What’s more, many of the poorly designed studies used substances that are known to neutralize silver, creating the appearance that the microbes became resistant to the silver when in reality the silver had simply been rendered inert by the poorly chosen ingredients, or levels of silver used were simply too low to be effective. Other studies simply didn’t use high enough concentrations of silver.

The bottom line is that once again, the environmentalists are dead wrong about silver. In fact, their sensationalistic claims have simply been blown out of the water by the facts.

Whatever the true motive of the radical environmentalists for denigrating the use of antimicrobial silver in commercial products, their protestations are generally fallacious in nature, and frequently border on the ludicrous.

Therefore, until conclusive evidence for serious silver resistance among pathogens can be demonstrated, the neo-Luddite environmentalists, simply put –

– need to shut their yaps, crawl back into their caves and let science and industry continue to develop effective commercial silver-based products that allow people to take maximum protective advantage of the infection-fighting qualities of silver…

…and that will save millions of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs over the years and decades ahead.

Colloidal Silver, Radical Environmentalists and Rational Environmentalists

Why colloidal silver and other silver-based antimicrobial products will sooner or later be regulated by the EPA as “environmental toxins”…

A member of the Colloidal Silver Secrets Community on Facebook recently posted a question, asking why I so frequently write articles against what I call "radical environmentalists" and the EPA, and what this has to do with colloidal silver.  

Since the EPA and the radical environmentalists are joined at the hips in an incestuous relationship that could ultimately spell doom for colloidal silver and other silver-based consumer products, I thought readers of this ezine might be interested in reading my reply.

Rational Environmentalists
v/s Radical Environmentalists

The EPA is the Environmental Protection Agency. They are a federal government agency commissioned, essentially, to regulate pollution and toxins and protect the environment from being harmed.

Environmentalists, on the other hand, are (generally speaking) well-meaning people who believe we should each live our lives in such a way that we don't destroy the very environment we depend upon for our existence and sustenance.

However, environmentalists range from what I call the RATIONAL to the RADICAL. I'm always careful to distinguish between the two, since I consider myself a rational environmentalist.

For example, rational environmentalists want people to voluntarily do things like:

· plant more trees

· recycle aluminum cans and plastic beverage bottles

· garden, and mulch your food scraps rather than discard them

· buy energy-efficient appliances wherever possible

· put insulation around your home water heater so it doesn’t use so much electricity or gas

· separate your trash into different categories so it can be more efficiently disposed of

On the other hand, radical environmentalists are all about raw force and power. They want to hyper-regulate and micro-manage every aspect of your daily life with rules and regulations, including rules for what temperature you can put your thermometer on at home…

…how much electricity or gas you can use each month in your home, how far you can drive each day (i.e., fuel consumption), how much trash you can put in your dumpster each week, even how much toilet paper you can use when you wipe your rectum.

The radical environmentalists are all about control.

What’s more, they’re heavily agenda-driven. And much of their agenda is based upon the needs of whichever corporations they’re receiving the largest grants and donations from.

In other words, they cry about the environment, but they are in reality front men for whoever is paying them the most money.

These are the environmentalists who scream to high heaven about the "toxicity" of antimicrobial silver, and rail against its use in consumer products such as colloidal silver, or toothbrushes, computer keyboards, kitchen contact surfaces, clothing, etc.

They claim -- with no convincing evidence whatsoever -- that the use of antimicrobial silver will eventually destroy the environment (even though the silver comes from the environment in the first place, which they never bother to mention).

Radical Environmentalism
And the Colloidal Silver Wars

Radical environmentalists are very politically oriented, and frequently work hand-in-hand with the EPA to get regulatory policies adopted that are consistent with their own agenda.

In 2009, for example, a consortium of these radical environmentalists petitioned the EPA to pull products containing silver nanoparticles -- including colloidal silver – from the market until they could be studied to determine if they posed a threat to the environment.

They claimed silver is a dangerous “pesticide” that might harm “ecologically sensitive microorganisms” if enough of it “escaped into the environment” from commercial products.

The EPA asked for public comments before making a decision.

So, while the radical environmentalists rallied their followers to send comments to the EPA questioning the environmental safety of silver-based consumer products –

-- I rallied colloidal silver users from around the country and we bombarded the EPA with emails, letters and phone calls telling the environmental bureaucrats to keep their hands off colloidal silver.

This took the EPA and the radical anti-silver environmentalists completely by surprise! They thought their plan to have silver-based products pulled from the market was a slam-dunk sure thing.

In fact, they were so sure of victory, they had attached an appendix to their petition to the EPA, naming 300 silver-based products -- including the top five brands of colloidal silver -- as products needing to be pulled from the market immediately.

Switching Tactics

Seeing they were losing the battle to push the EPA to hyper-regulate antimicrobial silver in commercial products using the “pesticide” angle, the radical environmentalists switched tactics.

They’re now waging an ongoing public relations campaign designed to scare the bejabbers out of the American public. They want the public to believe silver is a “dangerous toxin” that threatens to destroy the environment, including plants, animals and yes, even people.

And they’re working tirelessly to drum up public pressure on the EPA to institute strict regulations against the use of antimicrobial silver in commercial products, in order to “save the environment.”

First they issued a "white paper" calling for an outright ban on colloidal silver and all silver-based products, claiming silver will harm children. You can see my article exposing the fraudulent nature of their claims here.

Then they began having their environmentalist cronies in the news media print articles decrying silver as a “dangerous environmental toxin.”

And they’ve cajoled environmentalist researchers at several universities into doing laboratory studies attempting to "prove" antimicrobial silver is somehow “toxic” to the environment.

Over the months since they’ve undertaken this new tactic, I’ve worked relentlessly to expose these planted media reports and agenda-driven laboratory studies as junk science and rank sensationalism.

Threats and Rank Sensationalism

The radical environmentalists even threatened a fellow natural health journalist for exposing the millions of dollars in grant money they had been taking from Big Pharma before trying to have silver-based antimicrobial products regulated as dangerous "pesticides" and "toxins." You can see my article about this blatant threat, here.

And now the radical environmentalists are actually claiming that earth is DOOMED because of the use of silver in commercial products like silver-impregnated stockings that help prevent stinky feet.

I’m not kidding you. That’s the mentality we’re dealing with.

The radical environmentalists are using the worse kind of hyperbolic sensationalism in order to scare the public into thinking silver is a threat to man and his environment. You can read my article exposing their false claims of an impending environmental apocalypse here.

EPA Holds Hearings on
The Use of Antimicrobial Silver

By using these over-the-top tactics, the radical environmentalists have convinced the EPA to continue holding hearings on the growing use of antimicrobial silver in consumer products, and to develop stringent new regulations limiting the use of silver in all consumer products.

The EPA now appears to be leaning toward the radical environmentalist position against the use of silver in consumer products, even though pro-silver groups like the Silver Nanotechnology Working Group (SNWG) have been attending these meetings and vying earnestly to put the true facts about silver and its safety in front of the EPA panel. Naturally, the EPA, being a government bureaucracy, leans more toward the radical environmentalist position, because it will give them more regulatory power over business and industry, and over what consumers can and can't buy in regards to silver-based products.

You've never known a government bureaucracy to turn down more power and authority, have you? After all, government bureaucracies are all about empire-building. So I certainly don't expect them to listen to reason in this case, either. They are simply acting true to kind.

So far, the EPA hearings have pretty much been stacked with the agenda of the radical environmentalists.

And in my humble opinion, it is only a matter of time before anti-silver regulations demanded by the radical environmentalists will be adopted by the EPA. Perhaps slowly at first. But they will be adopted.

Continuing to Expose the Anti-Silver
Agenda Of the Radical Environmentalists

Colloidal silver is probably responsible for more healings of serious illnesses and more saved lives than any other natural remedy in existence. That’s why I continue to take a bold stand on its behalf.

Of course, silver-impregnated butcher paper -- a recent invention -- would dramatically cut down on food-borne illness and disease, saving literally hundreds of thousands of human lives each year and eliminating billions of dollars in health care costs in this country alone.

It appears the radical environmentalists don't care in the least about saving human lives or eliminating billions of dollars in health care costs. Apparently, they think of man as a worthless blight on this planet, and the more of us that die of food-borne illness and disease, the better.

I simply cannot fathom how they can call themselves “environmentalists” and in the same breath oppose such a simple and profoundly effective solution to the growing problem of bacterially contaminated food -- especially since the deadly MRSA pathogen has now been found in the U.S. meat supply.
