Is Colloidal Silver Toxic to Human Sperm?

Is colloidal silver toxic to human sperm or harmful to human reproduction?

Let's just say that like anything else the radical anti-silver environmentalists come up with, these charges are highly exaggerated. Here’s the straight scoop…

I continue to have articles forwarded to me about the study from September 2010 being touted by anti-silver environmental groups as proof that silver nanoparticles are "toxic" to human sperm, or even harmful to human reproduction.

These anti-silver environmental groups warn that using commercial products containing colloidal silver or silver nanoparticles should now be considered a dangerous practice for men because the silver could negatively affect their sperm count if enough is absorbed into their bodies.

This in turn could curtail human reproduction, the anti-silver environmentalists claim, causing a catastrophic worldwide decline in births.

Oh, my!

In the study being touted, human sperm were basically soaked in increasingly higher concentrations of silver nanoparticles. And it was later found that the sperm stopped growing once the concentration of silver nanoparticles reached a whopping 10 micrograms per milliliter (μg/ml).

Bullfeathers…

Of course, any claim that this study proves silver-based products are harmful to human sperm and human reproduction is complete b.s.

You could produce the same effect soaking sperm cells in high concentrations of just about any essential mineral, including iron, copper, selenium, chromium, even calcium or others.

But that doesn’t make it even remotely unsafe for men (or women) to ingest these natural substances in the form of nutritional supplements.

Indeed, colloidal silver and products containing silver nanoparticles have now been used widely by the public -- worldwide -- for over 100 years. And there’s been no decline in population growth!

Silver is even used in public and private swimming pools, in place of caustic chemicals like chlorine, to keep bacterial growth from exploding.

Yet the worldwide birth rate continues to grow. Earth’s population continues to expand. And not a single study on the face of the earth has shown that silver curtails human reproduction.

No Harm, No Foul…

One of the most profound proofs that there’s no harm to sperm in using small to moderate amounts of antimicrobial silver is the fact that silver is now used as a preservative in boar semen to prevent bacterial spoilage during storage, before the semen is used to impregnate female boars.

That pretty much proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that silver isn't harmful to sperm at levels that prevent bacterial contamination.

So soaking human sperm in excessively high concentrations of silver nanoparticles and then trying to scare men into thinking they won't be able to produce sperm if they use a silver-based product…

…is the worst form of exaggeration, deception and chicanery – particularly when it’s done in the name of science.

But what do you expect from the radical environmentalists at this point? After all, they even claim silver-impregnated stockings are “killing the planet” and causing global warming!

The Bottom Line…

The bottom line is this: Anything you saturate in a highly concentrated metal or mineral solution is going to be negatively affected at some concentration.

And guys, listen up:

The study showed that for sperm to be affected, it would have to be exposed to 10 micrograms per milliliter (μg/ml) of silver nanoparticles.

Your common sense alone should tell you that you'd be hard pressed to get that much silver into your testicles. You'd have to inject it with a syringe, or drink gallons of it at a time.

As for the contention by anti-silver environmentalists that silver is harmful to human reproduction, here's an article I did on this subject some time back:

As you'll see when you read these two articles, the insinuation that normal doses of colloidal silver (or mere contact with commercial silver-based products) can be "toxic" to human sperm or harmful to human reproduction is pretty far-fetched -- just like the rest of the environmentalist's wild charges against silver.

So relax. Take a deep breath. And use your colloidal silver in moderation, without fear. If you’re concerned, check with your doctor first.

Colloidal Silver and the Deadly Super-pathogen CRKP

Is colloidal silver effective against the latest antibiotic-resistant superpathogen called CRKP, which is proving to be even more deadly than MRSA? I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you…

A spate of recent news articles have documented the rise of a new antibiotic-resistant superpathogen known as CRKP, which stands for Carbapenem Resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Klebsiella are pathogens that generally infect the urinary tract, blood and tissues.

Unfortunately, some strains of Klebsiella have already been demonstrated to be resistant to all of the usual antibiotic drugs that were once effective against them.

The Carbapenems -- a group of “last-resort” antibiotics for gram-negative bacteria such as Klebsiella – were still effective even against the antibiotic-resistant forms of Klebsiella, up until August of 2010 when Carbapenem-resistant forms of Klebsiella seemed to appear out of nowhere in India and Pakistan.

Later in 2010, researchers found the drug-resistant bugs had migrated to western Europe by hitching a ride with tourists returning from South Asia.

Today, less than a year later, CRKP is being found in as many as 36 states, with numerous cases being reported in southern California hospitals where researchers say the infection rate is now “unexpectedly high.”

Indeed, as of March 2011, 356 cases have already been found in Los Angeles area hospitals alone!

Colloidal Silver and Klebsiela Pneumonia: Good News and Bad

The CRKP form of Klebsiela pneumonia came out of the blue so quickly, cutting edge researchers haven’t had a chance to study whether or not silver-based antimicrobials such as colloidal silver are effective against it.

However, previous clinical research demonstrates both good news and bad.

The good news is this: Generally speaking, based on clinical studies, silver-based antimicrobials are highly effective against many strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, including forms that are often resistant to Big Pharma’s antibiotic drugs.

But the bad news is this: At least one sub-species of Klebsiella has been demonstrated in laboratory studies to become resistant to silver after repeated exposure to it.

This could mean that over time even silver-based antimicrobials might – and I must emphasize the word might – lose their effectiveness against the Klebsiella pathogens. Here’s why I emphasize “might”:

What researchers did was expose a test tube colony of the Klebsiella pathogen grown in a saline nutrient broth, to small amounts of silver -- just enough to kill off the weaker pathogens in the colony.

Then they repeated the process, each time adding a tiny bit more silver than the last. By the time they did this multiple times (11 separate times in the study I read, going by memory), the remaining pathogens appeared to be silver-resistant.

This was a test-tube study, of course. But it nevertheless demonstrated the possibility that a subspecies of Klebsiella can actually become silver-resistant under the right conditions of repeated exposure to a silver-based product.

Fascinating Results!

But, that’s not the whole story. While this particular strain of Klebsiella appeared to become resistant to silver, its ability to infect people was nevertheless destroyed!

Here’s what researcher L.K. Gupta, from the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, India stated regarding the silver-resistance developed by a sub-species of Klebsiella, writing in medical journal Folia Microbiologica:

"A silver-resistant mutant of Klebsiella pneumoniae B-5 was produced by passaging in nutrient broth containing graded concentrations of silver nitrate up to 150 ppm.

The development of silver resistance in the strain resulted in rough colonies, decrease in cell size, carbohydrate content and change in klebocin pattern.

The virulence of the AgR strain as checked by the burn wound model decreased as the mutant could not establish itself in the skin and spleen of the animals and the organism was cleared more efficiently by human lymphocytes than the parent AgS strain."

In other words, using the B-5 strain of Klebsiella, the researchers were able produce a strain that was resistant to a silver-based antimicrobial (silver nitrate).

However, the silver-resistant strain they developed suffered from a significantly reduced cell size, and was considerably weaker in virulence (i.e., ability to cause infection) than the parent strain.

Indeed, the silver-resistant strain, though alive, could no longer establish functional infectivity in the skin and spleen of animals used in the research.

And the body’s natural immune system processes readily cleared the microbe, indicating it had been so weakened by the repeated exposure to silver that it was no longer a significant threat.

Thanks to the silver, even the pathogens that didn’t die during exposure to silver still lost their functional infectivity!

More Good News!

And there’s even more good news:

Before medical science discovered the new CRKP form of Klebsiella, clinical research had found that a whopping 75% of antibiotic-resistant strains of Klebsiella are stopped cold by silver-based antimicrobials!

Once again, writing in the medical journal Folia Microbiologica, researcher N. Kapoor of the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, India, states:

“Multidrug-resistant (MDR) clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae were checked for their sensitivity toward silver nitrate by the tube-dilution method. Nearly 75% of MDR strains could be successfully inhibited by 5 mg/L of silver nitrate.”

In other words, the vast majority of the strains of this potentially deadly pathogen that are no longer killed by the usual prescription antibiotic drugs have been shown to be inhibited by…(drum roll, please)…antimicrobial silver!

The fact that silver-based antimicrobials are effective against so many drug-resistant strains of the Klebsiella pathogen is truly good news, indeed.

Conclusion

However, I have to re-emphasize that as of this writing, researchers have not clinically tested the CRKP form of Klebsiella pneumoniae to see whether or not silver-based antimicrobials are effective against it.

Hopefully, medical researchers will take note of the clinical studies mentioned above, and begin immediate research to determine whether or not silver-based antimicrobials are as effective against CRKP as they have been demonstrated to be against other multi-drug resistant forms of the Klebsiella pathogen.

I’ll report further on this topic as new developments arise.

Is “Mother Earth” Making Her Own Colloidal Silver?

The ultimate irony is taking place: Radical environmentalists are attempting to force the EPA to regulate silver nanoparticles in order to “protect the environment.”

Meanwhile, it turns out “Mother Earth” has been manufacturing her own silver nanoparticles en masse – and likely for eons! The irony, of course, is completely lost on the radical environmentalists…

Radical environmentalists keep whining about the use of silver nanoparticles in commercial products, claiming when the silver nanoparticles eventually get returned to the environment they emit "toxic" silver ions that can harm tiny critters and disrupt the ecological balance of nature.

Of course, what the environmentalists ignore is this:

First of all, silver ions exist naturally in the environment. In fact, you’ll find silver ions just about anywhere nature has deposited mineral silver.

And secondly, the earth has a way of bonding the silver ions to minerals such as sulfur, making them essentially as harmless as…well...dirt. (See my previous article, "In Defense of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles")

This is exactly why the world’s oceans can contain millions of TONS of trace silver, yet those oceans are teeming with abundant life, both plant and animal.

And it is why the lakes and streams in major silver mining areas can also contain TONS of trace silver, yet are also teeming with abundant plant and animal life.

The huge amounts of trace silver that exist in nature simply can’t harm the little critters in the environment, because nature has its own way of sequestering the silver and making its antimicrobial properties inert.

Turns Out, Mother Earth Is Also Making Her Own Silver Nanoparticles!

But scientists have just now discovered that earth has another fascinating way of dealing with silver ions in the environment.

Indeed, it has been discovered that nature uses a chemical called humic acid to convert the supposedly “toxic” silver ions BACK to less toxic silver nanoparticles.

Indeed, according to the authors of a new study, the earth appears to be manufacturing silver nanoparticles on its own!

Apparently, humans are Johnny-come-latelies to the process, as earth has likely been manufacturing its own silver nanoparticles out of natural silver ions for…yes, eons!

You see, humic acid is ubiquitous in the environment. It’s produced by humic substances – chiefly dead, decaying vegetation -- which are the major organic constituents of almost all soil, streams, lakes and even ocean water.

And according to the study authors, when humic acid and silver ions come into contact in nature – particularly during warm weather -- silver nanoparticles are produced.

Not only that, but nature coats the newly-produced silver nanoparticles with constituents of the humic acid, so they are more stable and less prone to give off additional silver ions.

This explains why silver nanoparticles are being found throughout the environment, even in remote areas of the world where modern commercial products using silver nanoparticles have never existed.

“Mother Earth” is simply making her own silver nanoparticles as she sees fit!

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least to find out she’s making them to spite the very environmentalists who claim to be trying to protect her by regulating the commercial production of silver nanoparticles!

The Ultimate Irony

It just goes to show that the radical environmentalists do not have a CLUE as to how things work in the very nature they claim to be the protectors of.

The radical environmentalists simply want to have the EPA hyper-regulate every aspect of business and industry, including the production of useful products that contain antimicrobial silver nanoparticles.

So they blame findings of silver nanoparticles in the environment on business and industry, and scream to the high heavens for the government bureaucrats to hyper-regulate every product containing antimicrobial silver.

And you know what happens when government starts hyper-regulating things, don't you? The costs go up to the point it is no longer economically feasible to produce the products.

And that, my friends, is exactly what the radical environmentalists are after.

Meanwhile, Mother Nature continues manufacturing silver nanoparticles on her own, with a sense of humor I’m sure is completely lost on the radical environmentalists.

Indeed, “Mother Earth” herself may be the most prolific manufacturer of silver nanoparticles…on earth!

How’s that for irony? The people claiming to “protect” the earth from silver nanoparticles are actually trying to regulate a product that “Mother Earth” herself apparently manufacturers!

So there you have it – colloidal silver gets rid of stubborn pet odors!

When the FDA finally follows suit with the European health authorities and bans colloidal silver as a nutritional supplement (and they eventually will, believe me), I’m thinking we could sell it as a "pet odor eliminator" so people can still buy it (and use it however they darned well please)!

After all, when the EU banned the sale of colloidal silver as a nutritional supplement in January 2010, enterprising colloidal silver vendors simply re-labeled their product as a “water purifier” and continued to sell it!

And if colloidal silver generators are banned as well, I suppose we could re-label them as “pet odor eliminator” generators, as well.

Hmmm. Long live colloidal silver!

Another Reason You Need Colloidal Silver: 50% of U.S. Meat Supply Tested Now Contaminated With Deadly MRSA Pathogen!

Only a few short weeks ago I reported that as much as 14% of the U.S. meat supply has become contaminated with the deadly MRSA pathogen. Now researchers writing in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases say the figure is closer to 50%! Can colloidal silver help protect you and your family? You bet it can! Here’s what you need to know right now…

What's lurking in the meat you're buying for your family?

Plenty of disease-causing bacteria, according to a new study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

Almost HALF of all the beef, chicken, pork, and turkey bought in five U.S. cities and sampled by researchers, was found to contain drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, reports CBS News.

That’s up from only 14% in studies conducted late last year. In other words, the problem with MRSA contaminated meats is growing by leaps and bounds!

Each year, MRSA kills more people in the U.S. than AIDs. Hospitals now take extraordinary precautions to prevent its spread in surgical wards. Schools in a number of states have been closed to stop its spread. Even football games have been postponed when players have become infected. So its spread into the U.S. food supply is extremely problematic.

According to YahooNews.com:

In the new nationwide study, researchers analyzed 136 samples of 80 brands of beef, chicken, pork and turkey purchased at 26 retail stores in five cities: Chicago; Flagstaff, Ariz.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Los Angeles; and Washington, D.C.

The results showed that 47 percent of the samples were contaminated with S. aureus, and that 52 percent of the bacteria were resistant to at least three classes of antibiotics.

DNA testing suggests that the food animals themselves were the major source of contamination with S. aureus, said the researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix.

The study was published in the April 15issue of the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

"For the first time, we know how much of our meat and poultry is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant Staph, and it is substantial," said study senior author Lance B. Price, director of TGen's Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health.

In this study, a special colloidal silver solution was tested on contact surfaces where the deadly pathogens are known to colonize, and from which they can spread to humans. Case #4: Czech Clinical Study Proves Silver Particles Kill MRSA – This study was conducted at the Department of Physical Chemistry at Palacky University in the Czech Republic. It was later published in the prestigious Journal of Physical Chemistry B in August 2006.
