Colloidal Silver and Silver-Resistant Pathogens

Are some pathogenic microorganisms resistant to colloidal silver?
The answer is “yes” and “no.”  And it depends largely on who you’re listening to, and how their studies were conducted.   
Indeed, it turns out that many reported cases of bacterial resistance to silver have been either exaggerated, mistaken or based on poor study design by researchers.
Here’s the bare-bones truth no one else is telling you…

Some resources claim there are only eight pathogens that are resistant to the infection-fighting qualities of colloidal silver.  Others say there are 20. 
Actually, it’s a little more complex than that. 
There are over 20,000 catalogued pathogens in existence, and probably 20 million uncatalogued pathogens. 
So it’s quite inevitable that sooner or later you’ll run across a silver-resistant pathogen, which is to say, a pathogen that will not be killed by oral or topical use of colloidal silver. 
After all, colloidal silver is not “God.”  It’s just a natural substance that happens to have some very powerful antimicrobial and disinfectant properties.
Researchers claim antimicrobial silver is effective against over 650 different pathogenic microorganisms, whereas most traditional antibiotic drugs are effective against only several dozen pathogens, at best. 
So this certainly makes antimicrobial silver the most broad-spectrum of all natural infection-fighting agents.  But it cannot kill every single pathogen on the face of the earth.
The “complex” part is that while a certain species of pathogen might be quite susceptible to silver, a sub-species of that same pathogen might demonstrate at least some degree of resistance to silver.  
Partial Truths…
So, for example, you have some researchers claiming that the Enterobacteriaceae pathogen is silver-resistant.  (See “Colloidal Silver Medical Research Before 1940”)
But that’s only a partial truth, because it is only a sub-species of that family of pathogens that clinical studies have demonstrated to be silver-resistant. 
On the other hand, there are multiple other sub-species of Enterobacteriaceae that are very susceptible to the antimicrobial qualities of colloidal silver, including some of the antibiotic-resistant “superbug” forms.  (See “Colloidal Silver Versus Antibiotic-Resistant CRE Bacteria”)
There are also researchers who claim colloidal silver is ineffective against E. coli.  (See “Colloidal Silver Medical Research Before 1940”)
But this too is only a partial truth, because it’s only a sub-species of E. coli that’s been demonstrated in a handful of studies to be silver-resistant.
Indeed, many other strains of E. coli have been demonstrated to be very susceptible to the antimicrobial qualities of silver.  (See “Colloidal Silver and E. Coli” as well as “7 Deadly Microbes Killed by Colloidal Silver at Very Low Concentrations: Study”)
I’m not trying to complicate the issue; it just is what it is.
Just because a bacterium is said to be “silver-resistant” doesn’t mean every single member of that family of pathogens is silver-resistant.  It might only be a single sub-species that’s demonstrated silver-resistance, as in the above-mentioned cases.
When “Silver-Resistant” Pathogens Aren’t Really Resistant…
The situation gets even more confused, because some – and perhaps a majority -- of the research that’s ostensibly demonstrated silver-resistance in pathogens turns out to be misleading. 
In some cases, for example, researchers have labeled a certain pathogen as being “silver-resistant,” when in reality the pathogen was only resistant to the type of silver being used in the study. 
According to a clinical research white paper from the Immunogenic Research Foundation titled Microbial Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) and Oligodynamic Silver:
“Over the past two decades, multiple studies with differing designs and speciations of silver-based drugs have indicated that certain bacterial species and strains have physiological mechanisms that circumnavigate silver’s toxicity.
These mechanisms are essentially plasmid based or chromosomal based; the later expressing as ATPase translocating mechanisms.
In neither case did investigators employ nanoscalar oligodynamic silver.  Instead, the experimental designs typically utilized silver salt compounds, which deliver poor amounts of bioactive silver.”
In short, in studies that supposedly demonstrated there to be silver-resistant pathogens, the type of silver used was typically a silver salt compound such as silver nitrate, rather than “nanoscalar oligodynamic silver,” meaning electrically-generated ionic silver with very small particle size. 
This is true as well of other silver compounds.  For example, at least one sub-species of the common Enterococcus pathogen is known to be resistant to silver sulfadiazine cream.  So you’ll find many clinical resources listing this pathogen as being “silver-resistant.” 
Yet other clinical researchers have found that the very same pathogen is killed quite easily by electrically-generated colloidal silver (i.e., ionic silver).
This makes sense, because the Enterococcus is a very hardy pathogen.  And silver sulfadiazine cream is designed to release a very slow trickle of silver ions to help keep microbial populations from spreading throughout burn wounds.
But Enterococcus is not easily affected by such a slow release of silver ions.  On the other hand, if you expose this same pathogen to higher quantities of silver ions by applying enough pure, unadulterated electrically-generated colloidal silver, it dies rapidly. 
That’s because electrically-generated colloidal silver is composed chiefly of pure silver ions.  And silver ions are the active, infection-fighting “specie” of silver
So “carpet bombing” a pathogen like Enterococcus with pure silver ions all at once, rather than exposing it to a very slow stream of silver ions being released from a silver compound like silver sulfadiazine (which you could think of as a weakened solution), does the trick. 
This means the pathogen is not silver-resistant at all.  It’s simply that the right “specie” of silver must be utilized, and the right dosage of silver must be utilized, if the pathogen is to be effectively killed.
Bacterial Culture Contamination
Another problem that’s confused the issue is when researchers neutralize silver’s antimicrobial qualities before the silver can kill the bacteria in a Petri dish.
This usually happens when the researchers grow the bacteria in a nutrient growth media containing substances such as strong salts, minerals, sugars, amino acids and proteins such as soy casein. 
When silver is applied to pathogens being grown in such laboratory nutrient media, these substances tend to bond strongly with silver and reduce its effectiveness. 
In essence, the researchers unwittingly dampen silver’s effectiveness without realizing it. They then conclude they’ve discovered another type of bacteria that’s become resistant to silver. 
But if the silver were to be applied to the very same pathogens outside of the presence of the artificial growth medium, it would easily destroy the pathogen.
As revealed in the clinical research white paper from the Immunogenic Research Foundation, Microbial Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) and Oligodynamic Silver:
“Another most common problem of these experimental designs was the inadvertent culture contamination with various salts, something which will reduce silver efficacy.
The colloidal state and dynamics of living tissues is at odds with typical culture techniques and mediums, and brings about the unfortunately situation of requiring readers to compare apples to oranges.”
In other words, the nutrient growth media used in laboratories to grow bacterial colonies is quite different from living tissue. 
So all the researchers have actually demonstrated is that silver won’t work as well against the bacteria being tested when they’re grown in the laboratory in an artificial growth media that reduces silver’s effectiveness
Indeed, as far back as 1983, in a study titled Silver and Its Compounds (pg. 335; Disinfection, Sterilization and Preservation), a researcher named Grier demonstrated the fact that:
“Some so-called silver-resistant microorganisms may result from an apparent neutralization of the metal’s inhibitory action [by assay artifacts – ED]...
…these include the presence of chelators such as serial amino acids, constituents of hard water, different buffers, light, incubation temperature, and particularly, soluble components of soy agar (TSA) and tryptose glucose extract agar (TGE)”
Once again, in artificial laboratory growth media there can be components that neutralize silver’s antimicrobial qualities. 
On the other hand, in the human body there are transport mechanisms such as the  metalloprotein transport system that are specifically designed to “escort” silver intact through harsh chemical environments so it can do its work when it comes into contact with a colony of pathogens. 
According to the above-cited clinical research white paper, Microbial Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) and Oligodynamic Silver:
“More specifically stated, the ‘apparent’ resistance of microbes to silver-based drugs is typically due to (1) an inadequate protocol or procedure, or (2) neglect of the necessary parameters so carefully reviewed by Goetz, Zhao and a NASA commissioned study.
 “Hamilton-Miller et al., have reported that bacterial strains completely resistant to the salt speciations of silver have proved erroneous when proper study designs were employed.”
In other words, when pathogens that had previously been demonstrated to be “silver-resistant” were instead raised in a growth medium that didn't neutralize silver, and when proper procedures were followed by the researchers, the supposed “silver resistance” suddenly vanished, and the pathogens were killed.  
In such cases, the supposed “silver resistance” of the pathogen was actually non-existent.
Dosage Also Matters
In other studies in which researchers claimed to have discovered silver-resistant pathogens, the dosage used in the study was simply not strong enough for that particular pathogen. 
Indeed, when later studies were conducted using stronger-than-average doses of silver, these same pathogens were either killed outright, or so badly disabled they could no longer create infection. 
In other words, in some cases the original researchers who claimed to have found “silver-resistance” in the pathogens simply hadn't used a strong enough dose to fully affect the pathogen. 
Finally, in some studies unusually weak forms of antimicrobial silver were used, when stronger forms were called for.  So killing the pathogens would simply have been a matter of switching to a more powerful form of silver.  But the researchers instead concluded that the pathogens had become “silver-resistant” when in fact they hadn't.
What this means is that of the very few instances of silver resistance on record, at least some of them – and perhaps a majority of them -- were not even true.
Additional Information…
Back in the 1980’s when researchers compiled the list of 109 pathogens and related medical conditions shown in the older medical literature (pre-1940’s) to be treatable with antimicrobial silver, they included a list of eight pathogens known to be silver-resistant.

Of course, that was previous to 1940.  And in truth, only certain sub-species of those eight pathogens have been demonstrated to be silver-resistant in clinical studies, and as I’ve pointed out above, some of those studies demonstrating “silver-resistance” are highly suspect, at best.
At this point in time (2014) there are now said to be some 20 different pathogens (out of the 20,000 catalogued pathogens) that have been demonstrated in clinical studies to “exhibit various degrees of resistance to the bactericidal effects of silver-based drugs.” 
But “various degrees of resistance” is not the same as actual silver-resistance.  It just means that in many cases, higher doses or stronger forms of silver would do the trick.

Why doesn’t Big Pharma simply develop silver-based antimicrobial substances to fight the growing scourge of drug-resistant superbugs? 

 

After all, it’s been known for over 100 years that silver is the world’s most powerful natural infection-fighting agent. And it’s been known for decades that silver is astonishingly effective against the drug-resistant superbugs. 

 

Yet all we see are scary headlines proclaiming that medical science is “running out of options” in the fight against the superbugs.  Are they really?  Or is something else in the wind? Here’s what you need to know…

You've no doubt seen all of the screaming headlines lately about the scourge of drug-resistant superbugs that are now able to defeat even the strongest of prescription antibiotic drugs.

Public health authorities -- both on the national and international levels -- are sounding the alarm over the drug-resistant superbugs. 

And the news media is helping them whip up a fervor among the general public, demanding that the governments of the world "do something" to solve the problem.

For example, one recent news headline read, “Post-Antibiotic World Is the Real-Life Version of the Zombie Apocalypse.”

Ah, yes.  Lions and tigers and bears.  Oh, my!

Right In Front of Their Faces

But the solution to the crisis of antibiotic-resistant superbugs is staring medical science right in the face.  And it has been for decades.  And they know it.  

Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated the fact that safe, natural colloidal silver is astonishingly effective against antibiotic-resistant super-pathogens.  

For example, one of the latest clinical studies demonstrates that adding silver to antibiotic drugs actually increases their effectiveness by up to 1,000x, and makes drug-resistant pathogens susceptible to the antibiotics once again!

Here’s what the magazine Scientific American had to say about this most recent clinical study:

“Like werewolves and vampires, bacteria have a weakness: silver.

The precious metal has been used to fight infection for thousands of years — Hippocrates first described its antimicrobial properties in 400bc — but how it works has been a mystery.

Now, a team led by James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University in Massachusetts, has described how silver can disrupt bacteria, and shown that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern scourge of antibiotic resistance.

…Collins and his team found that silver — in the form of dissolved ions — attacks bacterial cells in two main ways:

It makes the cell membrane more permeable, and it interferes with the cell’s metabolism, leading to the overproduction of reactive, and often toxic, oxygen compounds.

Both mechanisms could potentially be harnessed to make today’s antibiotics more effective against resistant bacteria, Collins says.”

Silver Works Alone, As Well

More importantly, numerous other studies demonstrate the fact that silver by itself kills numerous drug-resistant super-pathogens. 

For example, this clinical study, published in the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology in 2010, demonstrates that antimicrobial silver alone is effective against drug-resistant bacterial strains, including multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ampicillin-resistant Escherichia coli, and erythromycin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes.   

Colloidal silver even kills the deadly, drug-resistant MRSA pathogen, now responsible for up to 94,000 life-threatening infections and 23,000 deaths per year in the U.S. alone (see documentation at the Colloidal Silver Cures MRSA website).  

In just a moment, I’ll show you even more clinical studies proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that colloidal silver and other forms of antimicrobial silver are devastatingly effective against the antibiotic-resistant superbugs. 

The Multi-Billion Dollar Scam

But first, a question: 

If the situation with drug-resistant superbugs is so dire – and it most definitely is – then why won't the medical authorities embrace silver as the solution?  

The answer is disturbing:  Ultimately, it’s because the big drug companies have something else in mind. 

You see, Big Pharma wants to tap into billions upon billions of dollars in taxpayer funds, in order to pay for the cost of developing brand new, super-strength antibiotic drugs. 

In other words, they want taxpayers to pay for the development of these new antibiotic drugs.  And then, afterwards, they want to sell these same new drugs back to the taxpayers for additional billions of dollars in profits!

According to the news media, the big drug companies are claiming that it’s no longer “profitable” for them to develop antibiotic drugs. 

Big Pharma wants to focus solely on developing drugs that people with chronic health conditions such as heart disease or diabetes will have to take for the rest of their lives, rather than drugs that only need to be taken for a few weeks at a time to cure an infection.

So what if tens of thousands of people are dying every year in the U.S. of drug-resistant infections?  It’s all about the Benjamins.  Only the money matters.  The cost in terms of human lives is irrelevant.  And the truly big money lies in developing drugs for diseases that have to be taken for the lifetime of the patient.

But…says Big Pharma, if the federal government will fork over billions of dollars in taxpayer monies to help fund antibiotic drug development, then (and only then) will they begin work on new antibiotic drugs to help stem the tide of drug-resistant pathogens. 

As investigative reporter John Aziz from The Week has pointed out, “The incentives to produce more and better antibiotics only kick in under the worst circumstances, when millions of people are dying from antibiotic-resistant infections."

Greed and Avarice

What Big Pharma wants -- in their utter greed and avarice -- is nothing more than direct guaranteed access to the public trough, meaning to taxpayer money. 

So they’ve purposely stopped developing new antibiotic drugs -- claiming they’re “not profitable” -- until the governments of the world agree to fund their development via taxpayer money. 

And if they have to wait for millions of people to be dying of drug-resistant infections from the superbugs before the governments of the world give in to their blackmail, then so be it.

In short, the entire antibiotic-resistant drug problem is very real, yet the so-called “hunt for a new solution” is a great big scam of the highest order.  It is an utter fraud.

There’s no “new solution” needed.  They have the solution.  It’s thousands of years old. And simply put, it is this:  Pure, natural antimicrobial silver.

Big Pharma knows for a fact that silver kills antibiotic-resistant microbes.  They’ve known it for decades.

After all, in clinical study after study after study after study after study after study after study silver has been demonstrated to kill the drug-resistant super-pathogens.

And Big Pharma is simply choosing not to use it, because if they admitted knowing that a few cents worth of silver could eradicate an infection caused by a drug-resistant pathogen, they’d never get their hands into the taxpayer’s pockets to the tune of billions upon billions of dollars in free drug development monies. 

So safe, natural colloidal silver sits on the sidelines, alone and completely ignored, even though numerous clinical studies demonstrate it to be astonishingly effective against the very super-pathogens you're reading about in the newspapers every day.

Proof Positive Colloidal Silver Kills Superbugs

As I mentioned, numerous studies have now demonstrated colloidal silver to be highly effective against antibiotic-resistant superbugs.  

Let me summarize just a few of these studies for you, and tell you exactly what the experts are saying, as well:


In this clinical study, conducted quietly in October 2006 at the Department of Microbiology/Molecular Biology of Brigham-Young University, and published in the journal Current Science, Vol. 91, No. 7, October 10, 2006, it was found that a number of the antibiotic drugs which formerly killed MDR (multiple drug-resistant) pathogens such as MRSA could actually be restored to full efficacy against the deadly pathogens, but only if a colloidal silver solution was used in conjunction with the drug!

The researchers found that when they used a liquid colloidal silver solution in conjunction with the antibiotic drugs, the synergism between silver and the antibiotic drugs brought the deadly pathogens back under control. Since the antibiotic drugs had previously lost their effectiveness against the super-pathogens, this clearly demonstrates that the silver was the deciding factor in the deaths of the deadly pathogens!


This clinical study, published in the journal Microbiology in June 2013, also demonstrates the ability of silver to dramatically boost the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs against drug-resistant super-pathogens. 

According to the study authors, “A declining pipeline of clinically useful antibiotics has made it imperative to develop more effective antimicrobial therapies, particularly against difficult-to-treat Gram-negative pathogens…This work shows that silver can be used to enhance the action of existing antibiotics against Gram-negative bacteria, thus strengthening the antibiotic arsenal for fighting bacterial infections.


This is the study I linked to earlier in this article, demonstrating the fact that antimicrobial silver alone is extremely effective against some of the most common (and deadly) antibiotic-resistant superbugs.  Most importantly, this study demonstrates that silver is bactericidal against these superbugs, and not just bacteriostatic.  This means it flat-out kills the drug-resistant superbugs rather than merely inhibiting their growth rate.

According to the study authors, “We aimed to determine through different in vitro assays the antibacterial properties of silver nanoparticles against drug-resistant bacteria, infectious agents that represeant a constant threat in hospital and community environments…Our data suggest that silver nanoparticles are effective broad-spectrum biocides against a variety of drug-resistant bacteria.”


In this study, antimicrobial silver by itself was demonstrated to literally decimate the deadly and very opportunistic multi-drug resistant pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa.  The researchers concluded, “In the present study, colloidal silver was shown to demonstrate very potent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa.” 

The researchers went on to plead, “This activity should be urgently exploited in the development of highly active antibacterial therapeutic agents to combat the rapidly increasing infectious diseases that currently challenge the present arsenal of antibacterial drugs.”  In other words, the researchers are practically begging Big Pharma to look into the use of antimicrobial silver as a means of stopping the horrific spread of antibiotic-resistant pathogens.


In this clinical study, published in 2010 in the International Journal of Microbiological Research, colloidal silver was found to be highly effective against such drug-resistant super-pathogens as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonells typhi

According to the study authors, their research “was the result of bioassay experimentation on the effects of colloidal silver on multidrug resistant bacteria.”  The researchers found that colloidal silver demonstrated “powerful antimicrobial activity against multi-drug resistant clinical gram positive and gram negative bacteria.” 


In this fascinating medical case study, lung disease specialists from Great Britain report on an 11-year old Cystic Fibrosis victim afflicted with multi-drug resistant pathogens including Burkholderia multivorans and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia.

Many Other Studies

There are many other clinical studies just like these demonstrating the fact that colloidal silver and other forms of antimicrobial silver kill the deadly drug-resistant super-pathogens with ease, or can be used in conjunction with existing antibiotic drugs to kill the deadly drug-resistant superbugs. 

But Big Pharma doesn’t want you to know about these studies, because if you did, you’d never again believe their hysterical cries that they need billions of dollars in taxpayer money to help develop brand new antibiotic drugs.

My point in writing this article is to demonstrate that medical science has known decades that antimicrobial silver is highly effective against the antibiotic-resistant super-pathogens. 

And therefore the current ongoing media scare in which the public is constantly being bombarded with the message “The world is about to run out of effective antibiotic drugs” is a grand farce designed solely to scare the bejabbers out of people, and to convince politicians to funnel billions of dollars of taxpayer monies into the coffers of Big Pharma as a means of inducing them to develop new and more powerful antibiotic drugs. 

But brand new antibiotic drugs are simply not needed.  Silver is the key.  And silver always has been the key.  All they have to do is start using it, either alone, or in combination with existing antibiotic drugs. 

As the famous surgeon and medical pioneer Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. reported way back in 1977:

"What we have done was rediscover the fact that silver killed bacteria, a fact which had actually been known for centuries...All of the organisms we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics...In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent."

And as clinical immunologist Dr. Joseph Weissman stated back in the early 1990’s:

"Today, many antibiotics are losing the battle with germs. I sincerely recommend that everyone have electrically generated colloidal silver in their home as an antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal agent."

As clinical researcher S.M. Foran pointed out over a decade ago:

"Ongoing studies on antibacterial properties of silver...indicate that silver is effective even against bacteria that are already antibiotic-resistant."

As researchers writing in the International Wound Journal pointed out in 2012:

As researchers writing in the prestigious Journal of Nanobiotechnology explained in 2011:

"… it is well known that silver ions and silver-based compounds are toxic to microorganisms, possessing strong biocidal effects on at least 12 species of bacteria including multi-resistant bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), as well as multidrug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ampicillin-resistant E. coli O157: H7 and erythromycin-resistant S. pyogenes…”

And finally, as the New York Times pointed out over half a dozen years ago:

“Now, with more and more bacteria developing resistance to antibiotic drugs, some researchers and health care entrepreneurs have returned to silver for another look. This time around, they are armed with nanotechnology, a fast-developing collection of products and skills that helps researchers deploy silver compounds in ways that maximize the availability of silver ions - the element's most potent form.”

The point being, silver’s astonishing effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant bacteria has long been known to medical science. 

The fact that Big Pharma refuses to utilize silver, while constantly beating the media drums claiming that we’re “running out of options in the war against drug-resistant pathogens,” is an indictment against them for the massive fraud they’re perpetrating.

Study: Silver Boosts Effectiveness of Antibiotics By Up to 1,000x!

The news media has been awash lately with stories about a brand new clinical study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, in June 2013, which concluded that antimicrobial silver can be used to boost the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs against drug-resistant bacteria by up to 1,000 times. 

But is this actually “new” information?  Or is it old news?

I suppose it really doesn’t matter, because it’s helping bring the infection-fighting qualities of colloidal silver back into the public limelight again, and awakening the general public to its powerful healing attributes.  But here’s the real scoop on the story you won’t get anywhere else…

In April I wrote an article titled Colloidal Silver Boosts the Effectiveness of Antibiotic Drugs, in which I covered all of the main studies up to that point demonstrating that colloidal silver and other forms of antimicrobial silver, when added to antibiotic drugs, tends to boost their effectiveness many times over.

For example, I pointed out the 2006 study conducted at the Department of Microbiology/Molecular Biology at Brigham-Young University, which found that numerous antibiotic drugs that had previously lost their effectiveness against drug-resistant pathogens suddenly regained their full effectiveness when colloidal silver is used in conjunction with them.

What’s more, I pointed out another study from the Andalusian Center for Molecular Biology & Regenerative Medicine in Spain, which concluded:

“The synergetic effect of silver nanoparticles with antibiotics has been studied combining silver nanoparticles with different antibiotics including ampicillin, kanamycin, erythromycin and chloramphenicol against gram positive and gram negative bacteria.  The antibacterial activities of these antibiotics increase in the presence of silver nanoparticles against gram positive and gram negative bacteria.”

And I pointed out the study published in Academic Journals, titled “Antibacterial Efficacy of Colloidal Silver Alone and In Combination With Other Antibiotics on Isolates from Wound Infections,” which concluded that “colloidal silver had a significant additive effect on many antibiotics tested.”

Also, close to seven years ago, on the Colloidal Silver Cures MRSA website, I pointed out another study titled “Synthesis and Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on the Antibacterial Activity of Different Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.” 

This study concluded that the effectiveness of antibiotics like penicillin G, amoxicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin, and vancomycin were all increased in the presence antimicrobial silver. 

On that same website I pointed out that since the antibiotic drugs tested had previously lost their effectiveness against the drug-resistant pathogens, these studies clearly demonstrate that the silver was the deciding factor in the deaths of the deadly pathogens!

Critics of Adding Silver to Antibiotics

I’ve also pointed out that there are critics of the idea of adding antimicrobial silver to antibiotic drugs. 

These critics claim that silver actually interferes with the absorption and effectiveness of antibiotics.

Indeed, these critics – including WebMD.com, MayoClinic.com, Livestrong.com and even Dr. Andrew Weil, M.D. who must be going soft in his old age -- generally regurgitate the warning from the FDA’s 2009 Consumer Advisory Bulletin, which states: 

“…the use of silver-containing dietary supplements may interfere with the body's absorption of some drugs, such as quinolone antibiotics [ciprofloxacin (Cipro), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin], tetracycline antibiotics, thyroxine, and penacillamine (Cuprimine).”

But in reality, there appears to be no documented evidence whatsoever for this claim.  At least, the FDA can’t provide any. 

In fact, when I filed a Freedom of Information Act Request with the FDA, asking them to document their claims that ingesting colloidal silver could interfere with the absorption of the stated antibiotic drugs and other types of drugs, they had to admit they had no evidence whatsoever for their claims! 

Silver Back in the Limelight

Now, as you’ll see in just a moment, major news media from around the world are reporting the results of the latest clinical study on silver’s ability to dramatically boost the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs. 

And they’re reporting it as if this study constituted brand “new” information that’s rocking the medical establishment.  

Truth be told, however, as I’ve pointed out above, the medical establishment has long since been aware of the fact that colloidal silver by itself is highly antimicrobial in nature, and that silver in any form tends to boost the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs, often many times over

Love-Hate Relationship

Before we take a quick look at what the worldwide news media is saying about this new study on silver’s ability to boost the effectiveness of antibiotics drugs, please keep in mind that the orthodox medical establishment seems to have an ongoing “love-hate” relationship with silver. 

They love it, because it works so darned well, and has so much infection-fighting potential, particularly in its ability to boost the effectiveness of their expensive antibiotic drugs which now largely fail to kill drug-resistant pathogens.

But they hate it, because it’s a substance the average Joe has easy access to (in the form of colloidal silver), and doesn’t generally need a doctor’s prescription in order to obtain and use. 

So they’re hard-pressed to figure out a way to patent it, monopolize it, and market it as a high-ticket drug item.

After all, when you and I can simply drive over to our local health food store and pick up a bottle of colloidal silver for twenty bucks, or make our own high-quality colloidal silver for just pennies, who needs some over-priced new silver-laced antibiotic drug from Big Pharma?

But now that the medical establishment is decidedly losing the battle against antibiotic-resistant pathogens, this new study seems to indicate that drug researchers are at least willing to take another good, long look at silver. 

Don’t Be Fooled

Don’t be fooled, however: 

One of the lead researchers on the new study, Jim Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University, has already stated that “…other researchers might now attempt to find non-toxic compounds that mimic silver’s bacteria-weakening mechanisms.”

Indeed, in an interview with another news media outlet, he stated, “We’re also encouraging people to look at what features of silver caused the helpful effects, so they can look for non-toxic versions.”

In other words, now that they’ve demonstrated how silver boosts the effectiveness of the medical establishment’s failing antibiotic drugs, they can start looking for other substances that “mimic silver’s bacteria-weakening mechanisms” and have similar “helpful effects.”

So the likelihood is that they may still have no intention whatsoever of incorporating antimicrobial silver into their failing antibiotic drugs. 

They may, in reality, be looking to find a chemically synthesized substance they can patent, which would duplicate the ability of silver to boost the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs.

What the News Media is Saying

Nevertheless, the news media appears to be ecstatic about the new study, which of course is good to see. 

Here are a few quotes from the various news articles I’ve seen so far:

From a news article in prestigious Scientific American (re-printed from the journal, Nature), we learn that the study authors discovered that it’s the silver ion that helps increase the efficacy of antibiotic drugs against drug-resistant bacteria, by breaking down the cell wall of the bacteria to allow more of the antibiotic drug to penetrate. 

This, of course, is nothing new.  I’ve written about it years ago in this article, titled, “Experts:  It’s the Silver Ion That Gives Colloidal Silver It’s Antimicrobial Power.” 

Nevertheless, as stated in the Scientific American news article:

“Like werewolves and vampires, bacteria have a weakness: silver.

The precious metal has been used to fight infection for thousands of years — Hippocrates first described its antimicrobial properties in 400 bc — but how it works has been a mystery.

Now, a team led by James Collins, a biomedical engineer at Boston University in Massachusetts, has described how silver can disrupt bacteria, and shown that the ancient treatment could help to deal with the thoroughly modern scourge of antibiotic resistance.

…Collins and his team found that silver — in the form of dissolved ions — attacks bacterial cells in two main ways:

It makes the cell membrane more permeable, and it interferes with the cell’s metabolism, leading to the overproduction of reactive, and often toxic, oxygen compounds.

Both mechanisms could potentially be harnessed to make today’s antibiotics more effective against resistant bacteria, Collins says.”

Of course, silver’s ability to break down bacterial cell membranes and interfere with the bacteria’s metabolism is most definitely not a new discovery.  It’s been known for decades, actually.

As reported in the 2008 study, Nanotechnology In Medicine and Antibacterial Effect Of Silver Nanoparticles:

“Nanoparticles mainly in the range of 1-10 nm attach to the surface of the cell membrane and drastically disturb its proper function, like permeability and respiration.”

As Dr. Murray J. Height, Ph.D., and Chief Technology Officer of the Silver Nanotechnology Working Group pointed out several years ago:

“All silver-based antimicrobials act against bacteria through the action of silver ions.  Silver ions interact with bacteria cells through three mechanisms:  1.) Damage cell membranes, 2.) Displace Ca2+ and Zn2+ ions, 3.) Interact with sulphur, oxygen or nitrogen.” 

And as pointed out in the medical textbook by silver researcher Alan B. Lansdown, Silver in Health Care:  Antimicrobial Effects and Safety in Use, published in 2010:

“The antimicrobial action of silver or silver compounds is proportional to the bioactive silver ion released and its availability to interact with bacterial or fungal cell membranes.”

Finally, as I pointed out in my article “Experts:  It’s the Silver Ion That Gives Colloidal Silver Its Antimicrobial Power,” the Handbook of Hospital Corps of the United States Navy stated way back in 1953:

Silver compounds have a wide variety of uses as caustics, astringents, antiseptics, and germicides. Their activity resides in the silver ion, which is a protein precipitant [in that] it is toxic to bacteria by precipitating the protein in the bacteria protoplasm.”

So while it’s good to see the media touting the findings of this new study, it’s almost laughable to call much of the information derived from the study “new.”  It’s actually been known since the 1950’s, and even before that.

Next, from an article on FoxNews.com, carried by the Daily Mail news website, we learn that the new study demonstrated “just a small amount of silver” made pathogens up to 1,000 times more sensitive to penicillin. 

What’s more, the study demonstrated that silver actually boosts the effectiveness of the antibiotic tetracycline against E. coli bacteria:

“A new study from Boston University revealed that adding silver to antibiotics enhanced the drugs’ abilities to fight off lethal infections in mice. 

Through their tests, the team showed that just a small amount of silver made E. coli bacteria between 10 and 1,000 times more sensitive to commonly prescribed antibiotics, such as penicillin.

Most importantly, the researchers showed that silver helped the antibiotic tetracycline fight a previously resilient strain of E. coli. 

This signified that the combination of silver and antibiotics could be used to resensitize antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. 

‘Overall, what we show is that small amounts of silver, non-toxic levels, can be used in conjunction with commonly used antibiotics to treat persistent infection and to treat bio-film based infections, which are problematic for medical implants,’ Collins said.’

Well, that’s quite fascinating, especially since the antibiotic drug tetracycline, mentioned in the third-to-last paragraph of the Fox News article excerpt above, is one that the FDA claims is inhibited by silver. 

Of course, it would hardly seem that tetracycline could be inhibited by silver, if silver increases this drug’s effectiveness against drug-resistant strains of E. coli, as the new study demonstrated.

Perhaps this is why the FDA could not produce any evidence or documentation of their claims that silver inhibits the absorption of tetracycline, when I asked them for it. 

According to an article about the new study on NatureWorldNews.com, the researchers found even more interesting information about silver’s abilities to kill the microbes:

The study also found that silver increased the efficiency of Vancomycin, an antibiotic that isn't known to kill gram positive bacteria…

Interestingly, silver treated bacteria weren't able to produce a biofilm and didn't turn dormant. Usually it takes several rounds of antibiotics to kill bacteria that become dormant…

Researchers even tested various doses of silver compounds that could kill the bacteria.

They found that the amount of silver required to make bacteria more sensitive to antibiotics would not cause any harm to human tissues. Oral or injectable silver could be used in humans, they said. 

Amazingly, most critics of colloidal silver claim it can’t possibly work when orally ingested.  This, of course, flies in the face of decade’s worth of successful oral use of colloidal silver by literally millions of people worldwide. 

But now we have top researchers from Boston University claiming oral use of silver will not only work (in terms of boosting the effectiveness of antibiotic drugs), but such small amounts are needed that it “would not cause any harm to human tissues.” 

What’s more, the researchers found that when silver is used, the bacteria aren’t able to produce biofilms, which are like fortified colonies the bacteria hide in to escape the lethality of antibiotic drugs. 

This, too, of course, is not “new” information.  It’s long been known that silver ions can prevent or even destroy bacterial biofilms (see 2005 study here). 

So while there is some new information one can glean from the study, in reality much of what the researchers “discovered” has been known for a long time. 

One Thing Missing In This Study

One thing you might have noticed in all of this hoopla, of course, is that there’s been no mention whatsoever made of the fact that numerous studies have demonstrated that colloidal silver can kill these pathogenic microorganisms all by itself, without the concurrent use antibiotic drugs!

Indeed, the researchers in this new study appear to have studiously avoided testing the antimicrobial silver by itself against the same pathogens they tested the silver and antibiotic drug combinations against.

Why? 

Could it be because the medical establishment fears that if the general public becomes aware that antimicrobial silver is indeed this effective against pathogenic microorganisms, they’ll flee from the use of potentially toxic antibiotic drugs altogether and embrace colloidal silver in its place, costing Big Pharma billions of dollars in annual profits? 

What the Experts Say About Colloidal Silver

As Dr. Joseph Weissman, M.D. board certified immunologist and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California Medical School has stated:

"Today, many antibiotics are losing the battle with germs.

Fortunately, the best germ killer, which was discovered over 2,000 years ago, is finally getting the proper attention from medical science - natural silver.

I sincerely recommend that everyone have electrically generated colloidal silver in their home as an antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal agent."

And as Harvard-educated Dr. Jonathan Wright, M.D. has stated:

“Colloidal silver just might be the next germ-fighting wonder drug. And not just for the serious threats making headlines: It's also effective against bacterial infections like strep throat, viruses like the flu, and fungal infections like Candida.

No matter how much a germ mutates, it can't change enough to escape the damaging effects of colloidal silver.

And in the process, the silver doesn't harm human tissue or kill off the good bacteria in the intestine the way antibiotics and other medications do."

And as author Zane Baranowski, CN, has stated:

"Silver is one of the most universal antibiotic substances. When administered in the colloidal form, it is for all practical purposes non-toxic.

Silver has been proven to be effective against hundreds of infectious conditions.

It has tremendous anti-microbial power; the history of safe and successful colloidal silver use is extensive, and the number of current health professionals and individuals that successfully utilize colloidal silver to reduce the length and severity of infectious disorders is growing exponentially."

And as Dr. Nenah Sylver, Ph.D has so astutely pointed out:

“Companies that sell colloidal silver or the equipment to make it are forbidden by the FDA to tell their customers about colloidal silver’s healing properties.

Interestingly, this has not stopped major pharmaceutical companies from producing other silver products that are approved for medical purposes.

These products include silver gels, for cuts, burns and wounds (silver sulfadiazine cream, a compound, is extensively used); silver coated bandages, widely and successfully used in hospital burn units; and various silver compounds, for other purposes.

The existence of these products makes it difficult for government agencies to deny the health benefits of silver any longer."

And as Dr. Ron Leavitt, Ph.D., of the Department of Microbiology at Brigham Young University has stated:

"The data suggests that with the low toxicity associated with colloidal silver, in general, and the broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity of this colloidal silver preparation, this preparation may be effectively used as an alternative to antibiotics."

And as best-selling author Dr. James Balch, M.D. has stated in his book, Prescription For Nutritional Healing:

"Topically, colloidal silver can be used to fight fungal infections of the skin or nails and to promote the healing of burns, wounds, cuts, rashes, and sunburn.

It can be used on toothaches and mouth sores, as eye drops, and as a gargle to fight tooth decay and bad breath.

It can also be used as sterilizer and can even be sprayed on air-conditioning filters and air ducts and vents to prevent germs from growing."

And as Byron J. Richards, CCN (Board Certified Clinical Nutritionist) and author of Fight for Your Health:  Exposing the FDA’s Betrayal of America, has stated:

"Colloidal silver is the product the FDA and many mainstream medical people love to hate.

…Their worst nightmare is people taking colloidal silver to combat the H1N1 swine flu – the nightmare for them is that it might actually work.

…The high efficacy in the use of silver to kill bacteria and fungus is not in question by anyone. This does not mean it kills every type of bacteria or fungus. And in the ones it does kill it does not mean it kills all of them.
