Tuberculosis Cases Increase: Colloidal Silver to the Rescue!

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious, infectious airborne bacterial disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is largely spread by coughing.

TB was once the leading cause of death in the United States. Now, due to an unexpected increase in cases in the U.S., health authorities claim TB might be making a resurgence here.

An article in the Washington Post dated March 24, 2016 says tuberculosis (TB) cases have increased in the U.S. for the first time in 23 years.

With a total of 9,563 cases being reported in the U.S. in 2015, which is 157 cases over those reported the previous year, the Post claims medical experts aren’t sure yet whether or not this increase could signal “a resurgence of one of the world’s deadliest diseases.” 

The largest increases in cases of TB appear to be in California, Texas, Florida and New York – population centers constituting a whopping one-third of the U.S. population. 

According to the Washington Post article: 

“The disease is treatable with antibiotics, but the course can be long and complicated.

Certain forms of the bacterium that causes TB are becoming impervious to the drugs designed to kill them, leading to the development of multidrug-resistant strains of infection.

… In a related report, the CDC also called for increased awareness of the potential for active TB among foreign-born temporary workers.”

Will Colloidal Silver Help?

Does colloidal silver work against TB?  

Some experts say it will.  Indeed, in one clinical study researchers concluded that silver nanoparticles, “showed excellent antibacterial activities against M. tuberculosis around 10 ppm.”

The well-known and highly respected Dr. Gordon Pedersen wrote, in his 2014 book “A New Fighting Chance”:

“Tuberculosis is a common and often deadly infectious disease caused by mycobacteria…silver has destroyed tuberculosis in laboratory studies.

According to a clinical study published in the Journal of Nanobiotechnology in May 2012, both gold and silver nanoparticles were demonstrated to be effective against the pathogen Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) which is used in clinical studies as a surrogate for the tuberculosis bacteria.  The researchers wrote:

“Diseases such as tuberculosis (TB) have always had a large impact on human health. Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is used as a surrogate for TB during the development of anti-TB drugs.

…The purpose of this study was to examine the potential of nanoparticles as anti-TB compounds by studying the interacting mechanisms between nanoparticles and bacteria.

… We investigated effects of gold and silver nanoparticles on BCG and Escherichia coli…The results suggest the nanoparticles have potential applications as anti-TB compounds… In terms of anti-TB drug development, this study suggests that nanoparticles may represent useful candidates for therapeutics.

Colloidal silver has been used as an antibacterial agent since ancient Greece. Unlike antibiotic drugs, bacteria cannot easily develop resistance because silver targets multiple components in the bacterial cell. As a result, silver is used in medical equipment coatings and dental resin components.

In conclusion, we have demonstrated that gold and silver nanoparticles display excellent antibacterial potential for the Gram negative bacteria E. coli and the Gram positive bacteria BCG [which serves as a surrogate for the tuberculosis pathogen]. 

…In terms of anti-TB drug development, this study suggests that NPs may represent useful candidates, but will require significant development to ensure optimal bactericidal activity and low host toxicity.”

Of related interest, a company called Klearsen Corporation apparently at one point developed an inhalable lung treatment utilizing atomized particles of ionic silver along with a small amount of peppermint oil.

The treatment was designed for tuberculosis, as well as for Mycopbacterium Avium Complex (MAC), i.e., the cause of so-called “hot tub lung,” in which the pathogens Mycobacterium avium or Mycobacterium abscessus infect the lungs similar to the way the tuberculosis pathogen does.

According to a Klearsen Corporation spokesman in March 2006, preliminary clinical studies had yielded some astonishing results:

"After having very good results against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, it seemed like the obvious step to screen the compound against M. avium and M. abscessus," said Steve Frank, the project director.

"We have been utilizing this compound in our patented Respiratory Inhalation Therapy treatment for years to deal with numerous ailments and this testing finally provides us with the substantiation necessary to move into the mycobacteria treatment arena." 

Preliminary work with an MAC (Mycobacterium avium complex) patient in clinical trials has shown encouraging results and suggests that the treatment period for this condition could be reduced from a typical 12- to 16-month course of antibiotics to a 4-week course of the Klearsen Respiratory Inhalation Therapy.

‘This is a very exciting period of demonstration for our KC-287 antimicrobial compound,’ stated Chris Groutt, the Marketing Director.  ‘We have all seen the dramatic capabilities of this product and now it is finally reaching the surface where it can benefit huge portions of the population.’

The treatment utilizes a nebulized mist of KC-287 to repeatedly coat the inner surfaces of the lungs. Being on the air-side of the tissue and formulated to gain enhanced entry into the bacterial cells allow the active agent to very effectively kill the mycobacteria with very low total dose to the subject.

Although the treatment is still in the experimental stage, early results are so encouraging, that clinical studies are moving forward.

Paul Whittle, the CEO of Klearsen Corp., is anxious to see this technology applied to MAC as well as tuberculosis patients:

‘Klearsen Corporation holds several patents relating to the respiratory therapy and the active agent. We are very pleased to see this level of performance in vivo.’” 

While the above treatment was apparently patented by the Klearsen Corporation, and as of 2006 the company was “still seeking FDA approval.”  That approval was apparently never granted, and the company website no longer exists. 

Nevertheless, people from around the world are reporting good effects after using colloidal silver for TB.  As an example, according to an online health board, colloidal silver is being used by individuals in Nigeria to help stem the country’s growing problem with tuberculosis.  As one individual wrote:

“When we first started offering colloidal silver in 2007, we were approached by seven patients. Six were HIV positive and one had Tuberculosis. After three months of taking colloidal silver the lady with the TB was clean. Her doctor couldn’t believe it.”

Colloidal Silver Protects Bounce House Kids

A new phenomenon is being reported by the news media:  Children are acquiring serious (and potentially deadly) Staph infections from playing in inflatable bounce houses where pathogenic microbes are easily spread from child to child. 

Thankfully, colloidal silver has not only been demonstrated to be a safe and powerful natural home disinfectant, it has also been demonstrated in clinical studies to be extremely effective against the Staph pathogen.

In an article titled “Inflatable Bounce Houses Spreading Serious Infection to Kids,” the author wrote:

“One of the most popular attractions, by far, at many birthday parties and other fun events for children is the inflatable bounce house.

These trampoline-like, inflatable playgrounds can keep most children occupied for hours at a time.

But they can also carry great risk. Brenda Sanderson noticed a series of odd sores on her 10-year-old son’s body in the days after he played in a bouncy house at a summer graduation party.

At first, both Sanderson and her son wrote off the sores as nothing more than burn marks from the plastic on the bounce house, which seemed like a plausible explanation.

But only after a trip to the doctor was her worst nightmare confirmed.

The marks, which were growing in size and emitting ooze, indicated a full-blown staph infection.”

The article goes on to warn that topical staph infections “can easily turn into a deadly situation if they’re not treated quickly and properly.”

Of course, what the author is talking about is MRSA, the deadly, drug-resistant form of Staph that infects some 94,000 Americans each year, killing up to 20% of those in which the infection ends up going blood-borne, due to the fact that modern antibiotic drugs are no longer effective against the pathogen.

Indeed, Staph was once easily treated with penicillin, but the organism is now completely resistant. Even the more powerful prescription antibiotic drug, methicillin, barely touches this deadly superbug.

Cleanliness is the Key

Children’s bounce houses are much like gym equipment in that dozens or even hundreds of people might use them daily, but they’re often not cleaned afterwards to the exacting standards needed to thoroughly disinfect and help prevent the spread of the Staph bug.

According to the Colloidal Silver Cures MRSA website, it’s important to understand that the Staph pathogen “lives on the skin of most people, but in its mutated state it can cause death in humans within a matter of days if it works its way into the blood stream through a minor scratch or scrape on the skin or an open sore, wound, cut or boil.”

Staph is most often spread through people-to-people contact -- touching, shaking hands, hugging, etc.

It can also be spread simply by touching a contact surface that someone with the pathogen living on their skin has also touched, including door knobs, public counter tops, hand rails, public restrooms and water faucets, public telephones, ATM machines, shopping cart handles, drinking fountain buttons, chairs, table tops, and yes, even children’s bounce houses, gym equipment and more.

This is why both Staph infections, as well as the deadly, drug-resistant form of Staph known as MRSA, have been spreading rapidly into the general public, infecting children in nurseries, public schools and daycare centers and public swimming pools, as well as adults in busy offices, gymnasiums, sports centers, churches, colleges, military facilities and other places where people congregate in groups or crowds.

Yes, even something as seemingly innocuous as a children’s bounce house has now become a potential repository for the Staph pathogen, due to the difficulty involved in thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the “house” after dozens of children have been playing in it. 

As one parent stated in an online comment:

“My four and six year olds had staph on their buttocks from a bounce house. My four year olds staph infection came back two times during that six months of treatment.

It was painful & embarrassing to my sweet girl. She has a nasty scar. The Velcro was exposed on the slide down & scratched my babies rear end. Within 24 hours they had staph.”

Colloidal Silver to the Rescue!

According to the author of a related article:

“The best advice that can be given is to thoroughly cleanse any open wound your child may have after visiting a bounce house. Also, before renting such equipment, inquire about cleaning procedures to keep you and your guests safe.”

I would add that after properly cleaning any cuts, scrapes, burns or other wounds received by a child after playing in a bounce house, it would be wise to also spray the affected area with colloidal silver and allow it to air dry.

If it were my child, I’d consider spraying the affected area at least several more times during the course of the day, and for several days afterwards, as a “just in case” measure.

You can also take the bull by the horns beforehand, and use colloidal silver to disinfect the bounce house before the kids play in it. 

In other words, after inflating a bounce house, but before allowing children to play in it, consider spraying the floor and walls of the bounce house with colloidal silver and allowing it to air dry.

You may have seen some of this information in previous articles I’ve sent, so I’ll keep it short. But at this point in time it’s critical to understand how truly effective colloidal silver can be against MRSA:

Case #1: A Brigham-Young Clinical Study Proves Silver Kills MRSA – In this study, conducted quietly in October 2006 at Brigham-Young University, and published in the journal Current Science, it was found that a number of the antibiotic drugs which formerly killed MDR (multiple drug-resistant) pathogens such as MRSA could actually be restored to full efficacy against the deadly pathogens, butonly if a liquid silver solution of colloidal silver was used in conjunction with the drug!  Since these antibiotic drugs had previously lost their effectiveness against the super pathogens, this study clearly demonstrated that the silver was the deciding factor in the deaths of the deadly drug-resistant pathogens!

Case #2: Iranian Clinical Study Proves Silver Increases Effectiveness of Antibiotic Drugs Against Staph – This study was conducted by the Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Medical Nanotechnology Research Center at the University of Tehran, Iran. It demonstrated that the addition of silver to three specific antibiotics (vancomycin, amoxicillin and penicillin) almost magically renews their effectiveness against today’s most deadly pathogens, including MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus).

Case #3: Taiwanese Clinical Study Proves Colloidal Silver By Itself Kills MRSA – Another study, this one conducted by the Nanya Institute of Technology in Taiwan and published in the journal Colloids Surface B Biointerfaces in October 2007, also demonstrated that silver colloids kill both MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, another deadly and extremely opportunistic superbug. In this study, a special colloidal silver solution was tested on contact surfaces where the deadly pathogens are known to colonize, and from which they can spread to humans. The silver solution proved to be completely effective against both the MRSA and Pseudomonas super pathogens!

Case #4: Czech Clinical Study Proves Silver Particles Kill MRSA – This study was conducted at the Department of Physical Chemistry at Palacky University in the Czech Republic, and published in the prestigious Journal of Physical Chemistry B in August 2006. The study demonstrated that “…silver particles with a narrow size distribution with an average size of 25 nm showed high antimicrobial and bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including multi-resistant strains such as Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA).” The study further demonstrated that very low concentrations of silver could be utilized to destroy MRSA, as long as the silver particles were very small, averaging 25 nm.

As you can see, colloidal silver has been clinically proven to decimate the MRSA pathogen.  Yet very few people know about this safe, natural way to help prevent (and heal) Staph and MRSA infections.

Are the Cited Dangers of Colloidal Silver Real?

Not a week goes by that someone doesn’t pass along an article to me from an individual claiming in shrill tones that colloidal silver usage is egregiously dangerous.

Of course, there are some very real dangers to drinking excessively high dosages of colloidal silver on a regular basis for long periods of time, and I’ve covered those dangers many times in previous articles.

Plus, there’s a very tiny subset of people who appear to be allergic to silver, and therefore should not drink colloidal silver at all. 

But many of the most common claims being made against colloidal silver are either devoid of facts and documentation, or highly exaggerated, and appear to be specifically designed to scare people away from trying colloidal silver altogether. 

Here are my short answers to some of the most common of those claims, with links to additional information you can check for yourself…

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge…

An individual recently wrote that she was shocked to find so much information on the internet demonstrating how dangerous it is to use colloidal silver.

She cited claims that:

• Colloidal silver interferes with the absorption of prescription drugs

• The pathogen e. Coli is actually resistant to silver

• Silver is toxic to normal human cells

• Silver is harmful to human sperm, eggs and reproduction

• Silver ingestion has been linked to birth defects

• Finally, she stated that a search of the PubMed database showed no relevant information to silver’s supposed infection-fighting qualities 

Of course, as I’ve pointed out in the past, all of these claims are “talking points” regularly used by such anti-colloidal silver sources as WebMD.com, MayoClinic.com, the FDA, Quackwatch and other such organizations that frequently serve as apologists for Big Pharma.

And very few of those claims have any significant documentation, or are based solely on test tube studies rather than real-life studies.

So let’s take a look at each claim, one-by-one, and see what we can learn:

·       CLAIM:  Colloidal silver interferes with the absorption of prescription drugs

The idea that colloidal silver interferes with the absorption of certain prescription medications has been plastered all over the internet.

But the only documentation ever cited is an FDA bulletin which makes the same claim. 

So I filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the FDA, asking them to document the claim.  They could not.   

Rather than print all of the details here, you can learn more by reading my previous article, “FDA Admits:  No Proof Colloidal Silver Interferes With Drug Absorption.”

Nevertheless, if you’re on prescription drugs you should tell your doctor about all of your nutritional supplements, in case there’s anything (including colloidal silver) that might be contraindicated.   

·       CLAIM:  The pathogen e. Coli is actually resistant to silver

This claim is based on "iffy" research in which the laboratory medium used to grow the e. Coli bacteria contained specific chemicals known to bond to silver and reduce its effectiveness.

In other words, the studies were test tube studies, not human studies.  And the chemical broth used by researchers to grow the e. Coli bacteria for the study contained a variety of salts and other chemicals that are known to neutralize silver’s effectiveness. 

As a white paper published by the Immunogenic Research Foundation pointed out:

“Another most common problem of these [test tube clinical studies] was the inadvertent culture contamination with various salts, something which will reduce silver efficacy.”

Researcher N. Grier, writing in the journal of Disinfection, Sterilization and Preservation way back in 1985, agrees with that assessment.  He pointed out in an article titled “Silver and Its Compounds” that:

“Some so-called Ag+ resistant microorganisms may result from an apparent neutralization of the metal’s inhibitory action or other assay artifacts.

These include the presence of chelators such as serial amino acids, constituents of hard water, different buffers, light, incubation temperature, and particularly, soluble components of trypticase soy agar (TSA) and tryptose glucose extract agar (TGE).”

In short, the microbes being tested weren’t actually silver-resistant. The silver was simply robbed of its antimicrobial qualities before it could do its job.

What’s more, out of 20 recognized strains of e. Coli in existence, only a single sub-species of e. Coli was shown to be “silver-resistant” in the “iffy” study.

In the following article, Colloidal Silver and E. Coli,” I cite seven different clinical studies that have reached quite the opposite conclusion, demonstrating silver to be very effective against e. Coli, including drug-resistant strains of the pathogen!

·       CLAIM:  Silver is toxic to normal human cells

Over the past five years there have been a small handful of clinical studies purporting to demonstrate that “silver is toxic to human cells."

Once again, all of these studies have all been conducted in test tube environments, not in the human body.

So yes, with all of the body's protective mechanisms removed, you can indeed demonstrate silver is toxic to cells, especially if you saturate the cells in overly high concentrations of silver.

However, the same studies could have been conducted with orange juice, or coffee, or even with distilled water, and would have shown the same cell-damaging results.

Any time you put human cells in a test tube, and start adding substances with none of the body's protective mechanisms in place, you'll be able to show harm to the cells.  That’s what makes clinical studies like this so disingenuous. 

Another important factor: 

The vast majority of these "silver harms human cell" test tube studies were conducted using cancer cell lines.  Of course, researchers have known for decades that silver has a particular affinity for cancer cells, and easily kills them without harming normal, healthy human cells. 

So all the researchers actually demonstrated is that silver kills cancer cells.  They then extrapolated, without any documentation whatsoever, that this same toxicity applies to normal healthy human cells.  Once, again, this is extremely disingenuous.

Therefore, the conclusions of the researchers that silver "harms human cells" are essentially bogus.  To learn more, see, “Silver Nanoparticles Stop Cancer Without Toxic Harm.” 

Naturally, egregious misuse of any substance can cause harm to human cells.  But normal, responsible usage of colloidal silver has never been demonstrated to harm human cells. 

In fact, as far back as the 1970's and 80’s the late Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. conducted groundbreaking research at Syracuse Medical University using tiny, electrically generated, sub-microscopic silver particles. And in human trials he found absolutely no harm to cells or tissues.

Dr. Becker would later write: 

“What we have done was rediscover the fact that silver kills bacteria, a fact which had actually been known for centuries...

All of the organisms we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics

...In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.”

·       CLAIM:  Silver is harmful to human sperm, eggs and reproduction

Once again, this claim is also based solely on test tube studies in which human sperm or eggs were soaked in such high levels of colloidal silver the only way you could possibly get that much silver into ones testicles or ovaries would be to inject it. 

Unless one was drinking gallons of colloidal silver at a time (when a normal human dose is a teaspoon to an ounce or so) there would be zero chance of getting that much silver into one’s reproductive system.  

What’s more, the claim is contradicted by modern artificial insemination practices in which silver is actually used to preserve animal sperm and help keep it viable longer. 

And the claim is also contradicted by animal studies in which silver was used as a “stain” to track the development of animal embryos in real-time, while causing no harm to the developing embryos.

·       CLAIM:  Silver ingestion has been linked to birth defects

The single "study" linking silver to birth defects wasn't a study on colloidal silver at all, but on drinking water from a local river source that had overly-high natural levels of silver.  

In the 1970’s, several women in Massachusetts had given birth to children with “fetal developmental anomalies of the ear, face, and neck.  Researchers tried to find out why this cluster of birth defects happened. 

They discovered low levels of silver in the local drinking water.  Silver levels were present at only 1/100^th of the EPA standard.  Nevertheless, even with such low levels of silver in the drinking water, the researchers blamed the silver for the cluster of birth defects.

If you read the study itself, it's pretty "iffy."  And to the best of my knowledge, there's never been a corroborating study to back the original study up.

What's more, animal studies have shown no harm to the developing fetuses, even when silver was being intubated straight into the pregnant animals. According to the Environmental Protection Agency:

“In a developmental toxicity study of pregnant rats conducted in 2002 by the National Toxicology Program (NTP), silver acetate was administered by gavage [tube-feeding – ED] on days 6-19 of gestation.

No developmental effects were reported at doses up to 100 mg/kg…

…More importantly, the results from this study did not demonstrate an increased susceptibility of offspring, nor did it demonstrate systemic toxicity.”

·       CLAIM:  No clinical evidence of silver’s supposed infection-fighting qualities.

The claim that there’s no body of medical literature demonstrating silver’s effectiveness against pathogens or illnesses is also bunk.
