Colloidal Silver v/s the EPA Greenies: Understanding the Lies Behind the “Silver is Dangerous to the Environment” Con

A number of readers have written to ask what’s going on with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in relation to their proposed regulation of nanosilver products, including colloidal silver.

Unfortunately, the answer is that the EPA is still pursuing ways to regulate all products containing tiny particles of silver.

You can read more about this in my latest article at this link:

But Why Are Environmentalists So Dead-Set Against Safe, Natural Colloidal Silver?

That’s the million dollar question. And the answer may well be that they are being paid to push for the regulation of silver-based products, including colloidal silver.

Here’s an article that will help explain why I so strongly question the underlying motives of the radical environmentalists in their ongoing quest to force the EPA to regulate silver-based products as “environmental toxins”:

As you may be aware if you’ve been following my blog posts for any length of time, a group of radical environmentalists have been pushing the EPA to re-categorize products containing tiny silver particles – including colloidal silver – as “environmental toxins” or “toxic environmental pesticides” and then regulate them so heavily that no products containing silver will be able to be sold without expensive environmental impact reports.

This of course would sound the death-knell for most colloidal silver manufacturers  and many other businesses that use tiny silver particles in their products  as environmental impact reports can run into the millions of dollars.

The contention that silver is somehow "toxic to the environment" is ridiculous at face value, of course. After all, silver comes from the environment in the first place, and is about as “toxic” to the environment as, well, dirt.

For example, as I’ve pointed out many times, the world’s oceans are literally saturated with trace silver.

In fact, the seas contain an estimated two million tons of trace silver. Yet they’re absolutely teeming with wildlife ranging from uncountable trillions upon trillions of the tiniest microorganisms, to uncountable billions of tide pool creatures such as starfish, minnows, sand dabs and crabs, to innumerable varieties of fish, to uncountable numbers of huge mammals like whales, porpoises and dolphins.

And there’s no harm whatsoever to this incredible array of wildlife from those millions of tons of trace silver, even though it’s been an integral part of the ocean’s vast mineral makeup basically since the beginning of time.

Proof Positive Silver is Safe in the Environment

Contrary to the shrill cries of the environmentalists, the world’s oceans are proof positive that silver doesn’t "upset the ecological balance"...

...it won't kill off “environmentally sensitive microorganisms” and set off a "domino effect" that will harm other wildlife…

…and in short it can't unleash the “inevitable environmental catastrophe” the radical sky-is-falling environmentalists are always warning of in their ongoing campaigns to have products containing tiny silver particles heavily regulated and even banned.

Fair Question, Honest Answer

Here’s the question everyone’s asking:

If silver is so toxic to infectious microorganisms that it can cure numerous serious infections and diseases in humans, how can it be harmless to tiny microorganisms in the environment?

Fair question. And the answer is easy: In the environment, silver particles bond rapidly with other minerals, salts, sulfur compounds, and more. And in so doing, they become essentially inert.

That’s how million of tons of trace silver, for example, can saturate the world’s oceans without causing any harm. It’s how tons of trace silver can saturate the lakes and streams in silver-mining states like Colorado, and those lakes and streams are still brimming over with wildlife from microbes to tadpoles and minnows and crawfish and trout and bass to just about every other form of aquatic life you can think of.

In other words, silver’s toxicity to microorganisms in the environment is neutralized by the process of agglomeration. As I stated earlier, it is the bonding of the tiny particles of silver with other materials makes it about as toxic as…dirt.

In nature, tiny silver particles become bound silver rather than free or raw silver, and essentially lose any toxic properties.

Agenda-Driven Junk Science

But the environmentalists completely ignore this well-known fact.

Instead of sending their researchers into the environment and testing lakes and streams for silver content, and then testing the health and longevity of the wildlife in those lakes and streams (which would prove their theories against silver to be dead wrong)…

…they purposely conduct experiments in controlled laboratory test-tube environments in which they can manipulate the factors of the experiment in order to bring about the results they want.

Yes, rather than test in real-life conditions, they instead saturate tiny minnows in an enclosed test-tube environment with unbelievably high levels of raw nanosilver particles, and then issue written reports on how “toxic” they found the silver to be to the tiny creatures!

These reports then get written up and published in science journals as “studies.” And voila’ – the environmentalists manufacture a “proof” that silver is toxic to wildlife in the environment!

As I’ve pointed out over and over again, this is pure, agenda-driven junk science at its very worst, because conditions like this in which test-tube environments are saturated with raw, unbonded silver simply don't exist in nature!

But the radical environmentalists don’t care. They're dead set on achieving their agenda of having the EPA so heavily regulate silver as a dangerous “toxin” that all silver-based products  including colloidal silver  will ultimately have to be pulled from the market in order to "save the environment."

Learn More About the
Environmentalist Campaign Against Silver

For well over a year now I've been watching the propaganda barrage being conducted against colloidal silver and other silver-based products by the radical environmentalists, and as many readers know, I’ve written a long series of articles and blog posts on this topic during this time.

Here's one of my latest articles on the subject, which you might want to read in order to get caught up:

Here’s my response to a recent official White Paper released by the environmentalist group Friends of the Earth, who called for all colloidal silver products to be banned or regulated as drugs:

Here’s an article explaining the ludicrous nature of the environmentalist claims against colloidal silver and other products containing nanosilver:

And here’s an article explaining why colloidal silver generators – the little machines used to make colloidal silver – will also soon be under the regulatory thumb of the environmental bureaucrats, and why you might want to get one now while they’re still legally available.

Is There Really Such a Thing as a "Silver Deficiency" in Humans?

Feeling Sick? You Could Have a Silver Deficiency!

The FDA and other self-proclaimed experts claim there is no such thing as a “silver deficiency” in the human body, because, in their view, the human body has no specific use for silver.

However, many cutting edge researchers strongly disagree, noting that incidences of illness and disease among the general population have skyrocketed simultaneous to the steep decline in the silver content of foods such as fruits and vegetables.

Silver Content in Food Drops Precipitously

One of the earliest studies reporting specifically on silver content in foods was conducted in 1940, by researcher R.A. Kehoe of UCLA. This study reported that an average daily intake of fruit and vegetables would provide between 50-100 mcg of silver as trace elements.

By 1975 the amount of silver found in our diet just about dropped off the scale! In fact it was so low that it became necessary to use picograms (one trillionth of a gram) as the unit of measurement instead on micrograms (one millionth of a gram).

As shown in Snyder, W.S., “Report of the Task Group on Reference Man”, the average daily dietary intake (including fluids) of silver has been estimated to be a paltry 70 pg/day. This is indeed a startling drop in the silver content of our foods and water!

Silver, Iron and Oxygen

Silver and all other minerals play important roles in the human body, and if we do not get enough, there are consequences! For example, the mineral iron has the capacity to absorb oxygen and serves as an oxygen transport mechanism in the body. The oxygen rich iron combines with red blood cells to form hemoglobin within the cells. Together they supply the oxygen needs for our body.

Iron is also part of myoglobin, which is the mechanism by which muscle tissue stores oxygen for later use. Some people with iron deficiency (anemia) often feel cold and tired. They feel cold because iron plays a role in regulating the body’s temperature. Iron-deficient people tire easily because their bodies are starved for oxygen. Without enough iron, the body’s fuel cannot be properly synthesized.

Silver also has its role in the body and without enough, there are consequences as well! Indeed, at this time it would be important to note that silver, like iron also has the capacity to absorb and transport oxygen. This fact allows silver to aid and support several oxygen dependant functions in the body, which will be covered within this article.

Silver Deficiency = Impaired Immunity

Many researchers over the years have found indications that prove silver does indeed play an important role in our health and immunity, and deficiency in silver impairs our immune system.

Robert O. Becker, MD, orthopedic surgeon and medical researcher, noticed a correlation between low silver levels and illness. Dr. Becker found that people who had low levels of silver (determined through hair analysis) were sick more frequently and their illnesses lasted much longer than people who had higher levels of silver. He believed a silver deficiency was the reason for the improper functioning of the immune system.

In his best-selling book The Body Electric, and in his other writings, Dr. Becker reported that silver was doing something more than just killing disease-causing organisms. It was also stimulating immune response in humans. He concluded that silver deficiency leads to the improper functioning of the immune system.

He also noticed that silver was responsible for major growth stimulation of injured tissues as silver is a catalyst for the creation of healthy, new cells. Burn patients and even elderly patients achieved rapid healing of damaged tissue with the aid of electrically generated silver ions. In addition, he discovered that cancer cells could be changed back to normal cells when directly treated with electrically generated silver ions.

What’s more, Dr. Becker was not the only one to notice the relationship between silver levels and health. For example, cancer research scientist Dr. Gary Smith also reported a correlation between low silver levels, sickness and immune deficiency.

Silver and Cancer Cells

Dr. Smith found that people who have low silver levels tend to be frequently sick and to have innumerable colds, flus, fevers, and other illnesses. He states; “Success (in cancer treatment) depends on silver in the person’s body. When silver is present, the cancer cells dedifferentiate and the body is restored. When silver levels are non-existent, the cancer growth rate continues because the cells cannot dedifferentiate...I suspect a silver deficiency is possibly one of the reasons cancer exists and is increasing at such a rapid rate.”

Essentially what Dr Smith is saying is this: If there is enough silver in our system, cancer cells – which are mutated cells – will dedifferentiate back to a normal cell. He further suggests that lack of silver in our diets may be at least partially responsible for the increases in cancer we see today.

This is not an unreasonable hypothesis and would also explain the great results that other doctors who use silver to treat cancer have had. For example, Dr. Bjorn Nordstrom of the Karolinsky Institute in Sweden has been using silver in his cancer treatments for many years, and has had great success. He claims silver frequently brought rapid remission in patients who were previously given up on by other doctors.

The research of Drs. Becker, Smith, Nordstrom and others clearly indicate a direct relationship between silver levels in the body and illness. It also illuminates silver’s near miraculous ability to reverse cancer in certain cases, and accelerate the healing of injured tissue.

Have NASA or the Russian Space Program Ever Used Colloidal Silver as a Water Disinfectant on Manned Space Flights?

A reader wrote and asked for documentation that the Russians use colloidal silver for water purification purposes on their manned space flights.

He stated:

“I keep coming across mention that the Russians used CS in their space craft as part of water purification. I'm trying to find any supporting documentation for this. Thanks, David”

Silver has not only been used by the Russian space program, but has also been used by NASA on manned space flights.

My original article on the topic of silver being used as a water disinfectant by both NASA and by the Soviets in their manned space programs is posted at this link:

The article is admittedly light on documentation, so here’s my more in-depth answer to the reader:

The NASA.gov Web Site Documents the Fact that NASA
Developed a Silver-Based Water Purification for Use in the Space Program

Here's an excerpt from an article I just found on the NASA.gov web site, discussing in-depth the silver-based water purification technology they developed for manned space flights.

I think you’ll find it quite interesting. Based on this article, it looks like NASA has put quite a lot of effort into developing a silver-based water purification system:

“Over the past two decades, NASA and its contractors have conducted extensive research on how to assure pure water for manned spacecraft crews and how to recycle wastewater for reuse on future long duration spacecraft.

This work has given rise to a large number of spinoff products and products for cleansing and detoxifying water and in some cases inspired the formation of new companies to commercialize the technology.

Among the latter is Sensible Technologies, Inc. (STI), Irmo, South Carolina, a company formed in 1989 to exploit a particular NASA developed water purification technology known as silver ionization.

In this method, developed in the mid-1960s by Johnson Space Center, a small lightweight generator dispensed silver ions in the potable water supply of the Apollo spacecraft to kill bacteria in the water.

…because of the NASA technology we employ, our systems destroy waterborne bacteria and viruses, including Legionella pneumophila, the bacterium responsible for Legionnaire's Disease.”

Isn't that awesome? What it basically means is that NASA engineers actually invented the very first colloidal silver generator, for use in the Apollo space program!

Older News Reports…

In the course of my research on this subject, I’ve repeatedly seen references to an old mid-1970's news article titled, "Winged-Ferry to Shuttle Between Earth and Space,” supposedly published in the authorative The Silver Institute Letter back in March 1976. This article is also supposed to contain references to the use of silver-based water purification technology in NASA craft.

I searched today and found a copy of this old article on the Doulton Water Filter site. As you’ll see from this excerpt, it’s quite an interesting article:

Silver will be used in two functions that will provide Shuttle crews with pure water for drinking, air conditioning, food preparation and other operations. Water wastes will be recycled in Shuttle flight, and silver's first job will be to treat hydrogen-saturated water coming from Shuttle fuel cells; this water will pass through a tubular device of palladium and silver alloy; tube wails will be 10 mils (0.25 ram. or 0.01 in.) thick. Under pressure of 60 psi at a flow rate of 7 liters/hour, 85% of the hydrogen will diffuse out through the palladium-silver tube walls and be vented in the space vacuum outside the tubes. The device is made by Life Systems, Inc., 24755 High Point Rd. Cleveland, Ohio 44122.

From the silver-palladium tubes, water will flow to a purifying unit where silver will perform its second task. Less than an ounce of silver bromide in a cylinder less than 20 cm. (8 in.) long will eliminate bacteria, including Pseudomonas A and Type IIIA bacteria in 15 minutes or more, NASA scientists report. By establishing 100 parts of silver in a billion parts of water as hygienic for drinking in the Shuttle, NASA eliminates the need for the 1,000 to 1.500 ppb of chlorine generally used for purification. This compact, efficient water purifier is the Advance Prototype Silver Ion Water Bactericide System, made by Chemtric Inc., 9330 West Willams St., Rosemont, Illinois 60018.

Here's a excerpt from a copy of an earlier 1973 article, originally published in The Silver Institute Letter, on the use of silver for water purification purposes in Soviet space craft:

“Russian scientists working on water recycling and purification problems for the Soviet space ship and orbiting station program have decided on silver as the best long-term sanitizing agent.

Researching the problems of water storage over periods of several months, as well as purification for immediate use, they determined that ionized silver provides the safest and longest lasting method of transforming polluted waste in potable water.

A significant fact in support of their decision to use silver for purification was their experimental confirmation of the absence of toxicity in the silver treated water. In lengthy experiments on animals they found that 100 parts and 200 parts of silver per billion in drinking water does not accumulate in the organism and does not produce any detrimental effect on the functioning of the organs or systems of the experimental animals.

This was also confirmed by year long experiments on volunteer human subjects. The concentration of silver used in these tests…100 parts and 200 parts per billion…is in striking comparison with the 10 to 50 parts per billion of silver found in potable water and in swimming pools treated by silver purification systems in the United States.

The scientists, Drs.. S. V. Chizhov. S. P. Pak, N. N. Sitnikova and Y.U. Koloskova. tried many methods of purifying regenerated water but all except the silver system proved unsatisfactory over the long run. Ultra-violet rays and ultra-high-frequency sound reduced micro-organisms by as much as 97% but water thus treated failed to meet standards of acceptability if the water were stored for any considerable period of time.

Chlorine, which is widely used to kill bacteria, requires dosages in thousands of parts per billion compared to the 100 ppb and 200 ppb used in the Russian tests; the chlorine itself is a pollutant for certain water uses and it often is dangerous to store or handle.

In sum, the Russians found silver to be the safest sterilizing agent, stable, and long-lasting.”

More Documentation…

On page 117 of the book Methods for Developing Spacecraft Water Exposure Guidelines, by the National Acadamies Press, you'll find this reference, which very briefly documents that fact that "biocidal silver" is used in the Russian MIR spacecraft as well as on the International Space Station:

"METHODS FOR DEVELOPING SPACECRAFT WATER EXPOSURE GUIDELINES FIGURE A-1 The Mir humidity condensate water-reclamation system, which is planned for the early phases of the International Space Station. On the ISS, this system will be located in the service module of the Russian segment. Source: Modified from Pierre et al. (1996). stream of the multifiltration bed is used to determine whether the water is of acceptable quality Biocidal silver (0.05-0.20 milligrams per liter [mg/L]) also is added here for microbial control. Conditioned water is heated (pasteurized) to 85°C by a heat pump (regenerative heat exchanger) and stored in a heated accumulator. Hot water is available to the crew directly from the accumulator; cold water is provided by rerouting the hot water through the regenerative heat exchanger (Samsonov 1996a)."

[Use the "Search This Book" function to find the four citations in the above book, regarding the use of silver on the MIR and International Space Stations.]

Even More Documentation…

Here's an article from the respected PhysOrg.com, discussing the silver-based and iodine-based water purification systems now being used on the International Space Station, as well as in U.S. and Russian manned spacecrafts.

http://www.physorg.com/news172133019.html

Basically, it says that on the International Space Station the Russians still use a silver-based water purification system, while Americans now use an iodine-based water purification system. And scientists have developed a new piece of technology the astronauts and cosmonauts can use to check their water supply to make sure they contain adequate amounts of silver or iodine.

And More…

What’s more, in an online document by Duane L. Pierson, of the NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston TX, as published in Gravitational and Space Biology Bulletin [14(2) June 2001], the author states in regards to potable drinking water on the International Space Station:

"Silver, at approximately 500 ppb, is used as the residual disinfectant in Russian water supplies whereas US water supplies use 2 to 4 ppm iodine for water disinfection."

Apparently, the Russians still use silver because they’re worried about excessive levels of iodine in the water causing thyroid problems for their cosmonauts. But the U.S. apparently switched over to using iodine, because of reports of people turning “blue” from drinking colloidal silver.

We haven’t seen any blue cosmonauts in the news lately, so maybe the NASA fears are a bit overblown.

The Evidence is Clear

The bottom line is that, yes, both the NASA and Russian space missions have developed and used silver-based water purification systems in order to keep drinking water from becoming bacterially contaminated on those long manned space flights.
