Colloidal Silver Makes Cut Flowers Live Longer

Learn more about the infection-fighting qualities of colloidal silver at www.TheSilverEdge.com
How would you like your cut flowers to last up to twice and long, with the blooms remaining vibrantly colored and wilt-free during the entire time?

Here’s a nifty tip that really works:  Add a little bit of colloidal silver to the water in the flower vase in order to prevent microbial growth and stop bacteria from colonizing the flower stem!

Experienced colloidal silver users have taken advantage of this technique for decades, which allows cut flowers to thrive longer than any other known method of fresh cut flower preservation.

And now there’s scientific proof demonstrating why and how it works.  Here’s the story you won’t find anywhere else...

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge

Several decades ago, when independent colloidal silver researchers such as Mark Metcalf and others were writing about the many healing benefits of colloidal silver, one of the fascinating facts they pointed out was that if colloidal silver were added to cut flowers in a vase, the flowers would last far longer than flowers that had not been treated with silver.

As Mark Metcalf wrote at the time, in the 1996 issue of Perceptions Magazine:

My next experiment was a little different.  I cut flowers in the back yard and left one on a shelf without water for twenty-four hours.

When I picked it up the next day it was completely limp.  I made a fresh cut at the bottom of the stem and placed it in a glass of high concentrate colloidal silver.

Each day it got better.  On the third day, the stem had become firm again, as if it had just been cut.  Not a single petal was lost.

The second flower that was cut had been placed immediately in ordinary water.  Many of its petals had already fallen.  Though the flower was in water from the start, it was already dying.

It’s as if there is something in silver that is tied to the very core of the life process itself.

These anecdotal reports were sometimes sneered at by mainstream scientists and the mainstream media.  But they can’t be sneered at any longer, because since that time clinical researchers have repeatedly proven them to be true.

Proven True

For example, in 2014, scientists from the Department of Horticulture at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran tested the hypothesis that silver-treated cut flowers in a vase would last up to twice as long as untreated cut flowers in a vase.

What they found was that in the untreated cut flowers, bacteria rapidly formed in the vase water, and quickly colonized the xylem of the flower, which are the tiny micro-tubular channels in the flower stem (similar to veins, in humans) that bring nutrients and moisture to the flowering head itself.

But in the silver-treated flower vases, the bacterial growth was dramatically reduced, and therefore the xylem remained unblocked by bacterial colonization for longer periods of time.  This allowed moisture and nutrients to be effectively carried up the stem far longer than in untreated cut flowers.  The result was beautiful fresh flowers that lasted up to twice as long as normal.

As explained in this August 21, 2014 press release from Inderscience titled “Cut Flowers Last Longer with Silver Nanotechnology”:

Once cut and dunked in a vase of water, flowers are susceptible to bacterial growth that shortens the length of time one has to enjoy the blooms.

A few silver nanoparticles sprinkled into the water, might be the answer to longer-lasting cut flowers according to research published in the International Journal of Postharvest Technology and Innovation.

Once the stems are cut and flowers added to a vase bacteria start to colonize the open ends of the stems and block the channels through which water enters. This is the main cause of a short-lived display even for the most expensive flowers, such as lilies, roses and freesias.

Many florists provide a small packet of plant food with their bouquets, but this does nothing to prevent the stems becoming blocked with bacteria.

Adding a drop of household bleach is perhaps a useful tip, but not all flower lovers wish to have the odor of bleach in the vase spoiling the scent of their flowers.

Now, a team in the Department of Horticulture at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, have tested silver nanoparticles, which are known to have antibacterial activity, in extending the blooming life of cut lilies (Lilium orientalis cv. 'Shocking').

They used suspensions of silver nanoparticles in water at levels of 5, 15, 25, 30 parts per million (ppm) and compared the floral life against controls with untreated vase water.

Seyed Hossein Nemati and colleagues found that control blooms gave a bright flora display on average for just under a week. Whereas the lower concentrations of silver nanoparticles extended this period by a couple of days.

However, at 35 ppm their blooms were maintained with good color and healthy petals for almost twice as long as the controls (less than 12 days).

Analysis of the stems and water revealed that at this concentration of silver nanoparticles bacterial growth was stymied for the longest period compared with controls where bacterial growth began within the first two days.

[More information: Nemati, S.H., Esfandiyari, B., Tehranifar, A., Rezaei, A. and Ashrafi, S.J. (2014) “Improvement of Vase Life and Post-harvest Factors of Lilium orientalis Bouquet by Silver Nanoparticles,” Notulae Scientia Biologicae.]

Higher Concentrations
of  Silver Worked Better

In their study, the clinical researchers pointed out that all four concentrations of silver nanoparticles (i.e., 5, 15, 25, 30 ppm) “significantly enhanced the vase life of cut flowers,” but that the higher concentration produced the longest extended life.

The researchers concluded, “Owing to its strong antibacterial properties, silver nanoparticles are dramatic tools for extending cut flowers post harvest life.”

The researchers also pointed out that even at the highest concentration used (i.e., 30 ppm) there were no apparent toxic effects on the flowers.

What’s more, the ability of the cut flowers to uptake nutrients decreased rapidly in the control flowers that had no silver added, while the nutrient uptake of the flowers in the water treated with silver nanoparticles barely decreased during the lifetime of the cut flowers.

Finally, the fresh weight of the control flowers that were not treated with silver nanoparticles dropped significantly over a period of several days, while the silver-treated flowers “maintained fresh weight at high values” according to the researchers.

In short, the researchers discovered that higher concentrations of silver nanoparticles used in the vase water resulted in far less microbial growth.  This in turn resulted in far lower bacterial colonization and “clogging” of the xylem of the flower (i.e., the vessels or channels in the stem that bring nutrients to the flower head itself).

Another Clinical Study

Another clinical study, this one by Chinese researchers, also confirms silver’s life-extending properties for cut flowers.

Rose-growing expert Robert B. Martin, of the Pacific Rose Society, explains it as follows:

Having been aware of the growing development of nanotechnology as well as the use of silver to preserve cut flowers, I was therefore fascinated to read in the column on Recent Rose Research in the January/February 2011 issue of the American Rose of a study by five Chinese researchers titled “Nano-silver pulse treatments improve water relations of cut rose cv. Movie Star flowers”.

The study itself appeared in a recent issue of the scientific publication Postharvest Biology and Technology.

According to the abstract of the article, the vase life of cut roses of the variety ‘Movie Star,’ when placed in deionized water, was normally only 9 to 10 days regardless of maturity at harvest.

However, when those flowers were placed in a nanosilver base solution for 24 hours and then kept in a low concentration nanosilver solution, the vase life of the cut rose flowers was prolonged by an additional 11.8 days.

Further examination revealed that the silver solution not only alleviated and delayed vascular blockage caused by bacterial contaminations but also inhibited stomatal conductance so that the water balance in cut roses was significantly improved.

Put simply, the vase life of roses treated with a nanosilver solution was extended from about 9 days to over 20 days, primarily because the silver inhibited bacterial contamination.

Once again, we see that clinical research proves fresh cut flowers will last up to twice as long when silver is used to treat the flowers.

Even More Evidence

Learn more about the infection-fighting qualities of colloidal silver at www.TheSilverEdge.com
According to the book, Horticultural Reviews, by Jules Janick, in a chapter titled “Stems Placed Directly in Water After Cutting,” there have been a number of additional studies demonstrating silver to extend the life of cut flowers by reducing bacterial growth in the vase water. As Janick explains:

Cut stems of flowers often have difficulties taking up water.  Lack of adequate water uptake can occur after a few days in stems placed in a vase solution, even if the stem cut surface had never been exposed to air.

This problem mainly relates to the development of bacteria that clog the xylem vessels, which occurs within 2-3 days of vase life…

…The effect of bacteria seems a purely physical phenomenon.  Bacteria cannot pass the pit membranes between xylem conduits as the pores in these membranes are too small and bacteria are unable to digest the membrane.  They occlude the small pores in the membrane, through which all water has to pass…

…A dip of the stem in an aqueous solution containing silver ions, or the continuous presence of Ag+ [i.e., ionic silver] in the vase solution, inhibited bacterial growth in cut flower stems and in the vase water (van Doorn 1997).

Recently, silver nanoparticles have also been used.  Solgi et al. (2209) applied silver nanoparticles to Gerbera jamesonii ‘Dune,’ and compared its effect with silver nitrate.

The chemicals were included in the vase solution along with 6% sucrose.  Vase life was 8 days in controls, and 11 days in the silver plus sugar treatments.  The nanoparticles had the same effects as silver ions.

Liu et al. (2009) reported that freshly cut ‘Ruikou’ Gerbera flowers had a longer vase life when treated with colloidal silver nanoparticles, compared to a treatment with just water.  The longest vase life was 8.9 days compared with 3.6 days in the controls.”

In short, according to Janick’s Horticulture Reviews, clinical studies have demonstrated that both ionic silver and metallic silver (i.e., silver nanoparticles) can extend the life of cut flowers by almost double, simply by inhibiting bacterial growth in the water in the vase.

In Summary

The Latvia-based company, Ag-Life.com, also known as SIA Silver Technologies Ltd., sums it all up as follows, in a message to professional florists:

“Fresh and healthy flowers are the best advertising for every florist. However, it is impossible that all flowers would look freshly cut by the time of buying, even if water in the vase was changed frequently.

The use of silver water will noticeably increase time to the moment of flower fading and will make the offer of your shop more attractive in customers' eyes.

Colloidal silver water consists of microscopic silver particles that, when being used in particular concentration, can eliminate about 700 harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other types of microorganisms.

Premature aging and fading of cut flowers' cells is frequently caused by putrefactive bacteria and other pathogenic microorganisms. Colloidal silver not only destroys pathogens in water, but also, getting into the plants' cells, delays aging processes inside plant and recovers damaged cells.

Flowers, put into the vase with colloidal silver, will preserve their freshness for 7- 10 days longer. For some cut flowers this period may reach even up to 2 months.

Silver water may be also used for spraying and watering plants. This way it will not only delay the process of fading, but also save plants from fungi and other diseases.

What is more, such water does not leave marks on leaves or flowers, and it does not contain chemicals hazardous for human health.”

The bottom line is that colloidal silver truly can make cut flowers last up to twice as long in the vase, or even longer with some flower species.  And it’s all thanks to the wondrous, germ-fighting capabilities of the silver itself.

Making BIG Batches of Colloidal Silver for About a Penny Per Ounce

Learn more about making big batches of colloidal silver at www.TheSilverEdge.com
Last week my wife Kathy and I made two, two-and-a-half gallon batches of colloidal silver, side-by-side, using our Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generators.

The first photo shows the two, 2.5 gallon containers uncovered, with the Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generators on top.
Make big batches of colloidal silver for pennies at www.TheSilverEdge.com

The second photo shows the two containers with pillow cases wrapped around them to keep the light out during the colloidal silver-making process, since we were making them in a room that’s normally brightly lit most of the day.

When completed, we had a whopping 5 gallons worth of high-quality micro-particle colloidal silver, at a total cost of about $5.

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge

Yes, that's five dollars for five full gallons worth of colloidal silver, simply by making it ourselves with a Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator.

Compare that to health food store prices of $20 or $30 for a tiny four-ounce bottle of colloidal silver, and you'll see why I always say if you’re going to use colloidal silver extensively, then you should always make it yourself for about 25 cents a quart with a high-quality Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge.

Indeed, rather than paying exorbitant health food store prices of $7 to $10 per ounce, you can quite literally make your own high-quality micro-particle colloidal silver for about a penny per ounce!

Here are some of the questions I received when I posted the above photos to the Colloidal Silver Secrets Community on Facebook:

Question:  Why do you make so much colloidal silver?

Answer:  Because my wife and I use it for just about everything from household disinfection to facial skin rejuvenation to treating topical and internal infections both in ourselves as well as in our rescue dogs.

My wife even adds colloidal silver to the rinse cycle of the laundry when she washes the kitchen and bathroom wash rags and towels, or bed sheets, or undergarments and more.

She also uses it on her outdoor garden plants, to help get rid of aphids, tomato fungus, and other pests and problems.  Not only do the plants grow faster and stronger, but the fruits and veggies they produce are absolutely superb compared to the past when she didn’t use colloidal silver in the garden.

We’ve even used colloidal silver on our outdoor mulch pit to get rid of gnat hatchlings.

And of course, we give away quarts of colloidal silver at a time to friends, family members, neighbors, co-workers and others.

In fact, no matter where we’ve lived, we’ve ended up being just about the most popular people on the block once our neighbors have found out that we can make colloidal silver for about 25 cents per quart.

The bottom line is that safe, natural colloidal silver is our #1 go-to resource for dealing with an innumerable number of things around the house that would otherwise require expensive (and potentially toxic) chemical products or prescription drugs.
Question:  Why do you cover the large containers while making the colloidal?

Answer:   When you buy colloidal silver from a health food store, you’ll notice it’s always sold in dark glass or sometimes dark plastic bottles.  That’s because the manufacturers know the silver will retain its potency almost indefinitely as long as it’s not exposed to bright light.

Since it takes 30 hours of production time to make a large, two-and-a-half gallon batch of colloidal silver, like those above, it’s vital to keep bright light off the production container while colloidal silver is being made.

Otherwise, prolonged exposure to bright room light or sunlight can cause silver particles to “tarnish” and ultimately fall out of suspension over time, which of course, can destroy the effectiveness of your colloidal silver.

So if we don’t have a completely dark room available in which to make colloidal silver (which is preferable), we instead cover the glass production container with anything that helps keep bright light out.  And it works like a charm!

For the same reason, once you’ve made some colloidal silver it should also be stored in either dark glass storage containers, or kept in a dark cabinet out of bright light.

Question:  What brew time are you using for 2.5 gallon batches?

Answer:  I usually use 30 hours for a 2.5 gallon batch.  That’s three hours for every quart of colloidal silver you’re “brewing.”

The Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge will actually run for days at a time with no problem, though most people use them to make the standard one-quart batches which take only three hours to produce 7-10 ppm colloidal silver.

Question:  Where do you find those large 2.5 gallon glass cookie jars you’re using to make colloidal silver in?

Answer:  You can find them on Amazon.com, or any number of other online retailers.   Since they’re widely available from different vendors (and at different prices) the easiest thing to do is to go to Amazon.com and use their search engine to search for “1 gallon glass cookie jars” or “2.5 gallon glass cookie jars” or whatever you want. They almost always have them.

Make big batches of colloidal silver at www.TheSilverEdge.com
Another idea is to search Amazon.com for “1 gallon glass fermentation jar.”  These oversized glass jars are usually used for fermenting Kombucha tea.

I haven’t used these one-gallon glass fermentation jars yet for making colloidal silver.  But they look perfect for the task.  And at the time of this writing, they’re available on Amazon.com (priced from $5.50 to $11.57 each).  They look like they’d be perfect for making gallon-sized batches of colloidal silver.
Make big batches of colloidal silver for pennies at www.TheSilverEdge.com

And yes, oftentimes there’s even gallon-sized Ball canning jars on Amazon.com.  Just search for “Ball 125th Anniversary Collector’s Jar 1 Gallon.”  These even come with a cool metal lid with a plastic insert on the inside, so you don’t have to search for plastic lids.

Important safety note:  You have to make sure that the mouth of the production jar is small enough that the generator itself cannot fall into the water, or be accidentally knocked into the water during the colloidal silver-making process, which could result in a potential shock or electrocution hazard.  The mouths on the half-gallon and gallon-sized Ball canning jars are fine.  I’ve already checked them out, and I’ve used them myself for making large batches of colloidal silver with a Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge.  But you’ll have check on the measurement of the mouth of any other large jars you might come across, to make sure they’re not wider than the generator itself (i.e., 4 ½ inches).  There’s no need to risk life-and-limb making colloidal silver, when it’s otherwise such a safe and simple task.

Learn to make colloidal silver for pennies at www.TheSilverEdge.com
Question:  Can you make smaller batches?

Answer:  Yes, of course.  The Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge was actually designed for making one-quart of colloidal silver at a time, in three hours of production time.  Its ability to maker larger-sized batches is just icing on the cake, so to speak.

You can use a one-quart wide-mouthed glass Mason jar or Ball canning jar to make these smaller batches.  Here’s a short 3-minute video demonstrating how to make normal, one-quart batches of colloidal silver, quickly and easily.

You can even buy two-quart (i.e., half gallon) Mason jars or Ball canning jars at Walmart or other stores (or online at Amazon.com), and make double-sized batches simply by letting the generator run twice as long (i.e., six hours for a half gallon jar, instead of the usual three hours for a quart-sized jar).

Or, you can watch the short video at this link (i.e., How to Make Big Batches of Colloidal Silver) to learn more about making the extra-large batches of colloidal silver (i.e., gallon-sized or larger) with a Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge.

The video at the above link explains how long your pure silver rods need to be when making larger than usual batches…how you can quickly calculate the length of time you’ll need to let the generator run for different sized batches…and some important safety tips, as well.

One final tip for making large batches:  When you make extra-large batches of colloidal silver (i.e., half-gallon sized or larger), you’ll likely end up with lots of silver oxide tarnish on your silver rods by the end of the process.  Silver oxide tarnish on the silver rods is a normal part of the colloidal silver-making process.  And the longer your generator needs to run, the more of it you'll see on the silver rods.  What's more, when making larger batches, some of the extra silver oxide tarnish that’s produced will inevitably fall off the rods and drop to the bottom of the production jar when you lift the generator at the end of the production process.  Don’t worry.  It’s no big deal.  The silver oxide is harmless.  And it will sink to the bottom of the jar because there’s no electrical charge on it to keep it in suspension.  So once you’ve finished making an extra-large, gallon-size or bigger batch of colloidal silver, and begin to pour it into your storage containers, when you get down to the last inch or so of colloidal silver at the bottom of the jar where the silver oxide tarnish has accumulated, simply pour it through an unbleached paper coffee filter as shown in this short video titled Filtering Your Colloidal Silver Solution.  The paper coffee filter will filter out the silver oxide particles perfectly, allowing you to capture that last inch or so of colloidal silver so as not to waste it.

Time Magazine Lauds Germ-Fighting Silver

Learn more about germ-fighting colloidal silver at www.TheSilverEdge.com
It appears even Time magazine is finally catching up with the times (pun intended), having named the powerful infection-fighting qualities of antimicrobial silver as one of the “100 New Scientific Discoveries” of 2014.

But are silver’s germ-fighting qualities really a “new” discovery?  Not hardly.  As any experienced colloidal silver user can attest, when used responsibly silver is one of the world’s safest and most powerful natural infection-fighting agents.  And the fact that it kills even antibiotic drug-resistant microbes has been known since the late 1970’s.

Nevertheless, here’s what Time magazine had to say about some of the latest scientific research into antimicrobial silver and its profound germ-busting benefits…

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge

Last year, when I wrote the article “Infection-Fighting Silver Gains New Respect from News Media,” I quoted nearly a dozen famous news media sources which had published positive articles on the germ-fighting benefits of silver.

In the course of my research for that article, I somehow missed the fact that Time magazine had also covered antimicrobial silver last year, in its annual special issue “100 New Scientific Discoveries 2014.”

Time reported on new research from Boston University demonstrating antimicrobial silver to increase the effectiveness of existing antibiotic drugs by anywhere from 10 to 1,000 times.  (See my previous article on the Boston University research into silver’s often astonishing infection-fighting qualities, here.)

The idea behind the new research is that silver could simply be added to modern antibiotic drugs in order to make them more effective against drug-resistant microbes such as the deadly MRSA pathogen as well as Clostridium difficile and others.

Why Time is Behind the Times

Of course, Time magazine is just a little bit behind the times.

After all, Dr. Robert O. Becker, M.D. had documented the astonishing effectiveness of silver against antibiotic-resistant bacteria back in…drum roll, please…1978.  This was  during the course of his well-known research at Syracuse Medical University.

As Dr. Becker would later write regarding his research in his New York Times best-selling book, The Body Electric:

“What we have done was rediscover the fact that silver kills bacteria, a fact which had actually been known for centuries ...

…All of the organisms we tested were sensitive to the electrically generated silver ion, including some that were resistant to all known antibiotics...In no case were any undesirable side effects of the silver treatment apparent.”

So for Time magazine to name antimicrobial silver and its ability to kill drug-resistant pathogens as one of the “100 New Scientific Discoveries” of 2014 shows a decided lack of understanding of the long history of silver in medicine.

Nevertheless, we have to give Time credit where credit is due, and give them a great big vote of thanks for covering the most recent developments demonstrating silver to be so effective against drug-resistant superbugs that drug-makers now want to add it to their antibiotic drugs in order to increase their effectiveness.

Here’s what Time magazine wrote:

When it comes to simple solutions to complex problems, we are repeatedly told “there is no silver bullet.”  But it turns out there just might be.

New research from Boston University suggests that adding silver to existing antibiotics can make the antibiotics 10 to 1,000 times as effective by interfering with a pathogen’s metabolism and making its cell membrane more permeable to drugs that can kill it.

Silver has been used as an antimicrobial since antiquity (Hippocrates prescribed its use in 400 B.C.) and there has been recent research to determine the effectiveness of silver compounds in treating cuts, burns and wounds…

…The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as deadly MRSA and Clostridium difficile, is a growing public health crisis, particularly in hospitals where drug-resistant infections kill tens of thousands each year.

Now, researchers hope that silver can be used as a coating on existing antibiotics as well as incorporated into medical implants to help prevent or eradicate infections that often occur during such medical procedures…”

Thankfully, today, high-quality colloidal silver – the world’s safest and most powerful natural germ-fighter -- is available in just about every well-stocked health food store in the United States.

And you can also make it yourself, for just pennies, quickly and easily.  I’ll tell you how people are doing it, in just a moment.

But first, if you’d like to learn more about colloidal silver’s astonishing effectiveness against drug-resistant pathogens, here are a few resources you might want to check out:
How to Make Your Own
Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver

A Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator from The Silver Edge allows you to make your own high-quality colloidal silver for less than 36 cents a quart.

Compare that to major health food store brands which usually cost between $20 and $30 for a tiny, four-ounce bottle, and you’ll see that the savings are astonishing.

In fact, compared to health food store prices for colloidal silver, your very first one-quart batch of micro-particle colloidal silver actually pays for the entire cost the generator.

Do you know of any other health product that literally pays for itself the very first time you use it?

Obviously, having the ability to make your own high-quality micro-particle colloidal silver for only pennies per quart is about as close as you’ll ever get to having "free" colloidal silver for the rest of your life, any time you or a family member, friend or loved one needs it.

And because the silver particles produced by this amazing breakthrough in colloidal silver-making technology are as low as .8 nm – a fraction of a single nanometer – their effectiveness against colonies of pathogenic microbes is astonishing.

Because of their extremely small size, the tiny, submicroscopic silver particles are up to 1,000 times more bioavailable than conventional silver particles.  This means the human body is able to absorb 99-100% of the silver, send it throughout the body to kill pathogens, and then excrete it with ease, afterwards.

Plus, it’s now known that these tiny silver micro-particles are able to kill off entire colonies of pathogens with far greater effectiveness than conventional colloidal silver particles, because of the “zombie effect” described in this recent article about brand new research out of Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Perhaps that’s why so many thousands upon thousands of people absolutely rave over the effectiveness of their homemade micro-particle colloidal silver, as you can see at this web page full of real-life colloidal silver success stories.
