I get a lot of
questions about using colloidal silver for spider bites. There seem to be two basic variations of the
question. First, people want to know if
normal, everyday spider bites can be treated effectively with colloidal
silver. And two, people want to know if
colloidal silver will help with the far more serious Brown Recluse Spider
bites.
There’s quite
literally zero clinical literature on the use of colloidal silver for spider
bites of any kind. But there are tons of
anecdotal and experiential accounts we can learn from. So let’s take a look at what others are
saying about their use of colloidal silver for painful spider bites, as well as
for the much more dangerous Brown Recluse Spider bites…
Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge…
About a decade ago, when my wife Kathy and I visited a hotel
on St. John’s Island in the Caribbean for the wedding of our daughter and
son-in-law, we ended up making the mistake of walking through some tall grass on
the hotel grounds while wearing short pants.
Unfortunately, the tall grass was infested with hundreds (maybe
thousands) of tiny spiders.
The little critters didn’t bother my wife, at all. But they must have thought I was awfully
tasty, because they bit the living heck out of me, all over my bare legs. By the time we had walked back to our hotel
room, I had little mini-welts dotting my legs, mostly from my ankles up to my
knees.
And of course, as with most spider bites, they itched and
burned like crazy. I wanted to dig into
them and scratch them so bad, it was all I could do to keep my hands away from
them, knowing that scratching only makes the bite worse and can lead to
infection.
We didn’t have any Calamine lotion or other anti-itch
medications with us. But I had brought a
small bottle of colloidal silver that had a pump spray top. So I simply sprayed some 10 ppm colloidal
silver directly onto the spider bites, repeatedly throughout the day, allowing
the colloidal silver to air dry each time.
And as long as I sprayed the bites with colloidal silver
every few hours throughout the day, I was able to function without battling
that incessant urge to dig at the bites with my fingernails. In terms of intensity, the itching and
swelling was cut by at least half with each topical application of colloidal
silver. And within a few days, the redness
and swelling around the bites abated, and the itching disappeared.
I was able to attend our daughter’s wedding
comfortably. And I’d thankfully discovered
another great use for colloidal
silver – truly the unsung hero of natural healing.
Options, Options and
More Options
Instead of simply spraying spider bites with liquid
colloidal silver as I had done previously, there are several other options people
have used that might provide even more dramatic relief. For example, if a spider bite is particularly
bad, many people recommend the wet cotton ball trick:
- Wet Cotton Ball Trick: If I were to get a spider bite today, rather than merely spraying liquid colloidal silver onto the bite, I'd probably put a cotton ball that's been thoroughly moistened with colloidal silver (not sopping wet, but good and moist) over the bite, and use a bandage to hold the cotton ball in place.
This keeps silver in contact with the bite area much more
effectively than merely spraying the bites with liquid colloidal silver
periodically throughout the day.
You simply change out the silver-moistened cotton ball at
least three times a day, and within a few days you’ll be good to go – at least,
according to others who have used this technique for spider bites. (You’ll see
what others who have used this technique have to say, below.)
A faster and simpler method is to obtain a good,
high-quality colloidal silver gel or cream that you can apply to the bite
periodically throughout the day:
- Colloidal Silver Gels and Creams: There are a number of great companies that make colloidal silver in gel or cream form, for topical use. And they’re much easier to carry in one’s purse or glove box, or in one’s luggage while travelling, than a bottle of liquid colloidal silver.
The main benefit from using colloidal silver gels and creams
on topical issues such as cuts, burns or even spider bites, is that the gel or
cream tends to hold the tiny silver particles against the affected area of the
skin for longer periods of time than simply spraying liquid colloidal silver
onto the skin. So you get faster and longer-lasting relief from itching,
inflammation and pain. And quicker
healing.
One of my favorite colloidal silver gel brands is called ASAP
Ultimate Skin & Body Care Gel, which contains 24 ppm colloidal silver and
is usually available on Amazon.com or SwansonVitamins.com
My good friends at Sovereign Silver also have a great
colloidal silver gel product called Sovereign Silver First-Aid Gel, which is
available widely on Amazon.com or through many other vendors.
And an even stronger brand (much stronger) is Silver Pure Cream. It contains 30,000 ppm nanosilver. It's
available at SilverPure.com
There are actually lots
of great colloidal silver gels and creams available commercially And you can read more about them (including
how to make your own colloidal silver gel or cream) in my previous article, Germ-Busing
Colloidal Silver Gels and Creams.
Here’s one more quick trick for dealing with particularly
nasty spider bites:
- Bentonite Clay Poultice and Colloidal Silver: Natural health journalist Tony Isaacs, over at TBIYL.com, recommends using silver mixed together with bentonite clay and applied topically as a poultice on problematic spider bites.
He says the silver helps with the inflammation and itching,
and the bentonite clay helps draw the poison out of the bite.
I have a short video on how to make a healing poultice with
bentonite clay and colloidal silver here. I've use this technique multiple times for
healing infected boils. But Tony says it
works great for quick and effective relief from spider bites as well.
What Other People Are
Saying About
Colloidal Silver and
Spider Bites…
In the book Prescription
for Nutritional Healing by Dr. James F. Balch, M.D. and his wife Phyllis A.
Balch, C.N., colloidal silver is recommended for treating spider bites
naturally. They very briefly write:
Spider Bite/Colloidal Silver – “An
antibiotic that reduces inflammation, promotes healing, and inhibits
infection.” (p. 642)
In other words, according to the Balchs, to help reduce the redness
and inflammation around the site of a spider bite, and to prevent infection and
promote faster healing, colloidal silver should be your “go to” remedy.
The following testimonials are from experienced colloidal
silver users who have healed their spider bites with topical application of
colloidal silver, in a variety of ways.
The first one discusses the moistened cotton ball trick:
“My
Mom had several spider bites on her legs last summer..My sis-in-law soaked
cotton balls in the colloidal silver, taped it to her legs where the bites were...Within
3 days she was all healed up!!!”
Here’s another story about a nasty spider bite and its
treatment using a combination of topical herbal remedies and colloidal
silver:
“My
son was recently bit by a spider. The results were puss and infection causing
tissue (skin) to degenerate.
I
used colloidal silver and it killed all bacteria and healed it. He will most
likely always have a scar, but he also still has a leg.
The
first day of the bite there was no treatments. By the morning of the second day
it was full of pus and double in size. I treated it with a Cat’s Claw and
Echinacea poultice. The third day the pus was gone but the bite remained the
same wise. Some infection was gone but not all.
I
used the colloidal silver once as a poultice and by morning it was smaller than
the first day. I used it the last day as a poultice again and it was just fine.
I soaked a cotton ball and taped it on overnight. Approx 6 ~8
hours.”
Here’s a story about a spider bite that went very awry when
the bite developed into a staph infection and afterwards a surgery became
necessary due to the severity of the infection; thankfully, when things
continued to go wrong, colloidal silver was brought to the rescue:
“A
few months ago, I was bitten on my left hand by a spider. I did not see
the spider, but I did use my left hand to wipe away from my face the spider
threads that I had walked into beneath the carport in my development.
About
four hours later I developed a small, white pimple on my left hand that
was sensitive to touching it and grew very painful during the
weekend. I believe it most definitely was due to disturbing a spider in its
web.
On
the following Monday, I went to my doctor for treatment. Because I had
not brought in the spider, he refused my opinion regarding a spider bite.
He treated me for a staph infection. Four days later I ended up in the
hospital with surgery on my hand and four days of antibiotics while in the
hospital. The wound was drained and I was sent home with another ten days
worth of antibiotics.
It
took about one week for the surgical procedure to stop bleeding and for the
bandage to come off. The first thing I noticed was that my hand was
frozen in place. I could not bend my fingers. With my follow-up
visit to my surgeon, he mentioned that I should expect some arthritis in the
hand, as that was a normal side effect after hand surgery.
Having
one of your Silver Edge colloidal silver generators at home, I began pouring colloidal silver
into cotton balls and thoroughly soaking my hand with the colloidal
silver. As soon as I saw that the
glistening effect on the skin had disappeared, I then repeated the same process
with DMSO. Slowly, my hand began to have more flexibility.
Three
weeks after having completed surgery, I returned again to the surgeon for
another visit and he was amazed at how much flexibility I had in my hand.
The hand was fully functional and no longer painful when bending my fingers.
Knowing American
physicians are reluctant to discuss colloidal silver, I decided to drop a
hint to him as to what I had been doing. With a sly smile on his face, he said,
‘Keep using the colloidal silver. I don't think I will be seeing you again."
That's
my story. No stiff hand. No pain. All gain. Wonderful stuff: colloidal
silver. And even more effective when used in conjunction with the DMSO......at
least in my case.”
Brown Recluse Spider
Bites
And Colloidal Silver
A lot of colloidal silver users have reported being bitten
by Brown Recluse spiders, so I’m going to throw in a few more of the testimonials
I’ve received from readers regarding using colloidal silver on such bites. However, keep in mind that Brown Recluse
Spider bites can be very serious, and
should be treated by a knowledgeable and experienced physician:
"My
son was bitten by a brown recluse. I worked for a doctor who was well informed
in natural medicines who recommended Colloidal Silver. It can be bought at any health food store.
My
son was bitten twice, so I know it wasn't my imagination that the silver
worked. Soak a cotton ball with the Colloidal Silver, tape it over the wound
& leave the cotton ball taped on for 24 hours.
When
you change the bandage the first time, you will have a lot of nasty yellow
drainage on the cotton ball, which the silver has drawn out. Use a clean cotton
ball soaked with the silver & clean the wound & repeat the process for
another 24 hours.
By
the second & third rounds you should be seeing much healing!! This is what
I know kept my son from having a dangerous wound & he has no scarring at
all.
My
granddaughter was also bitten & healed with the same treatment. I hope
someone out there tries this & reports their results. I am not a physician,
not guaranteeing results, just sharing what I know worked."
Here's another interesting testimonial regarding someone who
got bit by a Brown Recluse spider and used colloidal silver:
“Shortly
before thanksgiving I got bit by a spider. It really looked angry with a little
brown spot in it. Well, I washed it out with peroxide then rinsed that off and
put some AAA antibiotic cream on it. The next day it looked worse so about 9:30
pm I went to the emergency room.
Believe
it or not the doctor would not commit to what he thought it was. Money wasted,
he said ‘Whatever you do, don't use peroxide on it, and here is a rx for some
cream to put on it. If not better in a couple of days go see you primary
doctor.’
After
the E.R. experience I started spraying it with my colloid silver. It still
looked angry and was still concaved and red a couple days later. So I said
well, I need to go to my primary doctor. My primary doctor took one look and
said you have been bit by a recluse spider and that will require surgery. So he
made an appt with a surgeon. Due to the 14 inches of snow that was on the
ground I had to cancel the first appt. However I was spraying the spider bite
4-5- times a day with my silver.
It
was about 10 days before I finally got to see the surgeon. He looked at it real
close and asked ‘What have you been doing to this?’ I said have you ever heard
of colloidal silver? He said ‘Yes.’ I said well, I've had people praying for me
as to not have surgery and I've been using the colloidal silver 4-5 times a
day.
He
said ‘Well, whatever you’re doing, keep it up. You don't need surgery. It will
heal from the inside out. It may leave a scar. If you can't live with that come
see me again.’
It
healed completely, with only a small scar. Considering I have COPD, rheumatoid
arthritis and a few other problems the scar is just fine. The surgery would
probably kill me."
And another one…
“My
first cousin got a brown recluse spider bite on his right hand, middle finger. His hand swelled double its normal size &
the finger where the spider bit him looked like raw hamburger meat.
After
three weeks of prescription drugs, no change at all. But after only two days of colloidal silver
usage, drinking four ounces three times a day, and spraying the colloidal
silver directly on the bite, all swelling went down at end of the second day.
There
have been two other bites in Louisiana in which the individual’s finger had to
be cut off because the doctors said the antibiotic wasn’t working & the
patients could lose their hand or maybe their arm if the finger was not cut off.
Thank
u, The Silver Edge company -- I have two of your colloidal silver generators
& have had much success from many infections.”
And here’s another very interesting testimonial about a Brown
Recluse spider bite:
“I
would like share something with everyone. I have had my colloidal silver
generator for over a year now.
Two
people I know that were bitten by a brown recluse spider were continuing to
suffer advanced deterioration of wound area even after visiting emergency rooms
and having wounds cleaned out and given antibiotics.
Both
were given nano silver and topically applied to wound and bandage and kept
covered. Within days healing was complete.
One
of the individuals was called back by emergency room and asked why she had not
returned. She told them wound was healed, they said impossible because culture
showed antibiotic resistant infection present.
She
told them we had used the silver and wound was closed and healed. They simply
hung up on her.”
And another Brown
Recluse bite story I saw on Facebook:
“So,
my Daddy was bit by a spider on his shin a few weeks ago. The day after the bite (he didn’t realize
he’d been bitten until that next day) his leg was showing classic signs of a
brown recluse spider bite.
A
few days after the initial bite, his leg was in the beginning stages of
necrosis. Long story short, colloidal
silver was applied every day, several times a day, and his leg is COMPLETELY
healed!
I’m
not surprised, not really, but I’m still amazed, every single day, with new
discoveries of what all colloidal silver can do! Just wanted to share with my lovelies.”
