Colloidal Silver and the True Cause of Drug-Resistant Superbug Infections

Finally, albeit slowly, the veil is being lifted and people are learning the true cause of drug-resistant superbug infections. 

I’ve been screaming from the rooftops for years now that it’s not prescription antibiotic drugs used for medical purposes that are causing pathogens to mutate and turn into drug-resistant superbugs.  That’s just the cover story.

Instead, the real problem is the tons of antibiotics that are being fed to farm animals each year to help fatten them up and bring them to market faster.

This meat is then sold to consumers like you and me, filling us with low doses of antibiotic drugs every time we have a piece of bacon, a hamburger, a hot dog or even some chicken wings.

This in turn kills off weaker pathogens but allows superbugs to develop and colonize our bodies.  Here’s what you need to know...

According to this article in the L.A. Times, the UCLA Medical Center is now serving their patients antibiotic-free meat in hopes of “striking a blow against so-called superpathogens.”

According to the article:

“Feeding antibiotics to cows, chicken and pigs is a common practice that enhances growth in the animals but also contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance: when microbes evolve to become impervious to attack, making it more and more difficult for physicians to treat infections.

Bacteria that are susceptible to treatment die off in the presence of antimicrobial medication, allowing other bacteria that are resistant to drugs to thrive -- and endanger patients.”

In other words, UCLA Medical Center is now tacitly admitting the real problem that results in the development of drug-resistant superbug infections, i.e., the antibiotic-laced meat we’re fed each day, not the prescription of antibiotics many people get once or twice a year to help fight a sore throat, ear infection or sinus infection. 

The Culprits:  FDA and USDA

Now that major hospitals are belatedly (and still somewhat quietly) admitting it's the antibiotic-laden meat that's causing the drug-resistant superbug problem, maybe the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the FDA will finally do something about it. 

These two agencies are directly responsible for the 23,000 deaths per year from antibiotic-resistant superbugs. 

They've allowed farmers to feed antibiotics to cattle, sheep, pigs and even chickens and turkeys on a daily basis, because the antibiotics fatten the animals up faster, allowing the farmers to get them to market faster. 

This increases farming profits by literally billions of dollars per year, which is precisely why the USDA and the FDA have been so remiss in banning the use of antibiotic drugs in the feed of farm animals. 

And this is why an estimated 80% of antibiotic drugs sold each year – an astonishing 17 million pounds of antibiotic drugs -- are used in agriculture rather than in human medicine.  (See here and here.)  

According to a 2013 “Threat Report” from the Centers for Disease Control, feeding antibiotics to animals on a daily basis is the real cause of superbug infections:

“Resistant bacteria can contaminate the foods that come from those animals, and people who consume these foods can develop antibiotic-resistant infections.

The use of antibiotics for promoting growth is not necessary, and the practice should be phased out.”

It’s a bona-fide crime – replete with literally millions of victims annually, and tens of thousands of deaths. 

Yet the FDA and USDA to date won’t do anything about it.  They continue to allow Big Agriculture to use antibiotic drugs indiscriminately in farm animal feed in order to fatten up farm animals faster and make more money – in spite of the fact it’s literally killing people.

Contaminated Meat

Folks, as I've written many, many times, this is why over 50% of all of the meat you buy in supermarkets is now contaminated with superbugs like MRSA (see documentation here and learn what you can do about it).    

And it's why more than two million Americans acquire deadly superbug infections each and every year, and 23,000 of them die from their infections. 

The meat we eat is riddled with low-levels of antibiotics.  And when you eat it on a daily basis, it's like eating a small dose of antibiotic drugs every day. 

This gradually makes the pathogens that inhabit your body virtually immune to antibiotic drugs.  The weak pathogens are killed off, but the strong ones survive and mutate into deadly superbugs.

Update: Colloidal Silver and the Growing Problem of Contaminated Meat

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse in regards to the epidemic of food-borne illness and disease, they do! The deadly MRSA pathogen is now being found in increasing numbers in the U.S meat supply. Fortunately, there’s a safe, simple and extremely effective solution: colloidal silver!

Not too long ago, in an article you can read here, I discuss the alarming findings that the U.S. meat supply is contaminated with MRSA, the antibiotic-resistant pathogen that now kills more people each year in the U.S. than AIDs.

Unfortunately, according to recent reports the deadly MRSA superpathogen is now being found in increasingly greater numbers in our US meat supply, especially in beef and pork.

I pointed out in the previous article that a recent Canadian study showed nearly 14% of pork chops (about one in seven) and 6.3% of ground pork sold in supermarkets was contaminated with MRSA -- taken together, 9.6% of all pork samples.

Additionally, 5.6% of the beef and 1.2% of the poultry carried the potentially deadly pathogen. The bacterium was also found in veal, lamb and other popular meats.

Another report, by Louisiana State University, found 5.5% of pork samples and 3.3% of beef samples taken from local supermarkets were contaminated.

Of course, if you’re a big hamburger eater you might have reason to be even more concerned.

After all, unlike a package of steaks or pork chops which generally come from the same animal, hamburger meat is “batch processed,” meaning it takes numerous cows to make up a single batch of hamburger for packaging.

According to Dr. Eve Riser-Roberts, Ph.D., “Meat from as many as 1,000 cows may go into a single batch of hamburger, any one of which can infect the whole batch, exposing as many as 400,000 people to the infectious agent over a very short period of time.”

Now Test Positive for MRSA!

Worse yet, a recent study has led many critics to believe that the official numbers for MRSA contamination of meats may be quite low…

Dr Tara Smith, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa, led a new study and ended up discovering a new strain of MRSA running rampant throughout pig farms in the Midwest.

Dr. Smith’s study tested approximately 87,000 live animals and found that a whopping 49% of swine tested positively for MRSA, and 45% of the farm workers tested positive, as well!

Interestingly, 36% of the adult swine were positive, but 100% of piglets between the ages of nine and twelve weeks received a positive test result for MRSA.

Some of these pigs were shipped off to food processing plants and went on to supermarkets and grocery stores all over the country.

Do you really want to take the chance of finding out if they made it to your grocery store or dinner table?

Dr. Smith states that her findings constitute a grim reminder of the urgent need for safe food handing and cooking procedures, saying:

"It's likely that cooking will kill any MRSA present on the surface of meats. But anyone handling raw meats should be careful about cross-contamination of cooking areas or other food products, and should make sure hands are washed before touching one's face, nose, lips, etc."

In other words, while cooking the meat may kill the pathogen, it can get spread all over your kitchen first, contaminating counter tops and cutting boards and kitchen utensils (and your own body) while you’re preparing the meat for cooking.

MRSA Facts You Need to Know!

According to Stuart Levy, MD, a Tufts University professor of microbiology and medicine, “Cooking does kill the microbe, but MRSA thrives on skin, so you can contract it by touching infected raw meat and it can go invasive if you have a cut on your hand.

Indeed, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America, MRSA is now responsible for about 60% of skin infections seen in emergency departments.

And the CDC now reports that MRSA infections kill 18,000 Americans a year, out of the estimated 94,360 people per year who develop serious (i.e., invasive) MRSA infections after their skin is infected.

What’s more, according to CBS News, children are now at greater risk of MRSA infection than ever before. In their May 2010 report, they pointed out:

The number of children hospitalized with dangerous drug-resistant staph infections surged 10-fold in recent years, a study found.

Disease incidence increased from two cases to 21 cases per 1,000 hospital admissions from 1999 to 2008. Most infections were caught in the community, not in the hospital.


A Solution on the Horizon?

So where does this leave the average carnivore?

Giving up one’s daily supply of animal protein is not an option for most individuals. But do we have to play Russian roulette every time we want to enjoy a nice grilled steak or some pork chops?

This is another good reason why it is vital in the long run for innovative new products like the silver-lined butcher paper I wrote about several weeks ago be rushed into production and utilized in meat packing plants and supermarkets as soon as possible.

Paper Embedded With Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles Could Help Resolve Food-Borne Illness and Disease

The coated paper demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, suggesting its potential application as a food packing material for longer shelf life.”

That’s truly very good news, because without an innovation like this the problem with pathogen-contaminated meats and other foods is only going to get worse as time goes on.

-- without having to undertake expensive (and potentially health-robbing) processes such as irradiating fresh meats in order to kill bacteria.

The Environmentalist Fly in The Ointment

The only problem is this: Here in the U.S. certain radical environmental groups like Friends of the Earth and the Center for Technology Assessment have banded together to stop the use of colloidal silver nanoparticles in commercial products.

They speculate, without any evidence whatsoever, that the use of colloidal silver nanoparticles in commercial products for antimicrobial purposes will result in widespread release of silver throughout the environment –

-- and they claim this widespread release could harm our fragile eco-system by wiping out “ecologically important bacteria,” destroying plant life, and even harming higher order animals such as fish.

The environmentalists even warn – with unbelievable sensationalism -- that silver-based products could harm little children, and as a result they’ve called for a complete ban on such commercial products.

Of course, more level-headed researchers have pointed out that silver comes from the environment in the first place –

-- and that once released back into the environment, silver particles bond rapidly with other minerals, salts, sulfur compounds, and more. And in so doing, they become essentially inert.

This is why, for example, the world’s oceans contain literally tons of trace mineral silver, yet they are teeming with abundant wildlife from the smallest amoebas to gigantic whales and uncountable creatures in between.

Similarly, rivers, lakes and streams in mountain country around the world contain higher than normal levels of trace silver, yet they too teem with abundant wildlife.

So clearly, the mere presence of silver – even high levels of silver – in the environment is not a portent of ecological disaster.

Indeed, based on the astonishing numbers of living creatures in the world’s oceans and rivers alone, the argument could just as easily be made that the presence of silver is a boon to higher life forms and not a detriment at all!

But common sense arguments do not seem to change the minds of the radical environmentalists.

Indeed, the more their shrill claims are disproven, the more sensationalistic their subsequent claims become.

For example, now the radical environmentalists are even saying that colloidal silver nanoparticles are “killing the planet” by contributing to global warming!

Surprisingly, the environmentalists have gained the ear of the Environmental Protection Agency, which is now holding ongoing hearings on the use of colloidal silver nanoparticles in commercial products.

So, while the Israeli researchers who have discovered how to embed colloidal silver nanoparticles into meat-wrapping paper may well hold the key to the salvation of the U.S. meat industry in their hands --

-- and have a product that could ultimately save untold millions of lives around the world from infection and even death from food-borne illness and disease –

-- they will nevertheless be up against some formidable (albeit, in my view, mentally unstable) opposition when they try to bring their new innovation to market.

The environmentalists simply will not stand for new silver-based products being released, no matter how many lives it may help save.

The Word Is Getting Out

Thankfully, the word is getting out about this remarkable new breakthrough innovation.

Only recently, our good friends at the popular ezine Gizmag, which alerts its readers to the latest innovations in commercial technology, did a story on this Israeli research breakthrough, stating in part:

“Silver is a known killer of harmful bacteria, and has already been incorporated into things such as antibacterial keyboards, washing machines, water filters, and plastic coatings for medical devices.

Now, scientists have added another potential product to the list: silver nanoparticle-impregnated “killer paper" packaging that could help keep food from spoiling.

Led by Aharon Gedanken from Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, the team discovered that paper could be covered with silver nanoparticles through the application of ultrasonic radiation – a process known as ultrasonication.

…Unlike previous attempts at creating antibacterial paper, this one-step method was reportedly quite effective, and produced a smooth, homogenous, long-lasting coating.

By varying the nanoparticle concentration and the application time, the thickness of the coating could be varied as needed.

When exposed to E. coli and S. aureus bacteria, both of which cause food poisoning, the paper killed them all off within three hours.”

I’d definitely call that an innovation whose time has come!
