It’s becoming more and
more popular to wear disposable doctor’s face masks (aka surgical masks, or
particulate respirators) when going out into the crowded public during cold and
flu season, or during allergy season, or even when air pollution is high.
But there’s one small
problem with these disposable face masks, and that’s that they’re generally not
antimicrobial. They don’t kill the germs
that get trapped on the mask. And that can leave the mask wearer exposed to a
potentially nasty infection.
However…brand new
clinical research reveals there’s a simple solution to the problem, and that
solution, of course, is SILVER. Here’s
the story no one else is talking about…

According to a new clinical study,
“excellent real-time antimicrobial effects” can be achieved when the fabric of a
doctor’s face mask (i.e., also known as a surgical mask, or particulate respirator) is embedded with
silver nanoparticles.
That’s great news for anyone who wears such disposable face
masks, for example, when allergy season is in full bloom, or when excessive air
pollution is present, or when you’re going out into public during cold and flu
season and everyone around you is coughing like crazy, and you don’t want to
catch a nasty bug.
Many people also wear such disposable face masks when flying
on crowded airliners, or when visiting hospitals. I recently saw several people
in a local casino sitting at the slot machines while wearing such masks,
apparently to help filter out cigarette smoke.
As you know, doctor’s face masks are generally worn to help
filter out tiny airborne particulates so they’re not breathed in. They work for everything from germs to allergens
to dust to man-made pollutants to microscopic airborne bodily fluids from
people’s coughs.
But one thing most doctor’s face masks have in common is
that while they’re great for keeping the wearer from breathing in unwanted
germs or other particulates, the fabric of these masks have no antimicrobial qualities whatsoever.
This means germs can get stuck in the fabric of the mask
itself, colonize that fabric and potentially be spread from there by touching
the mask with one’s hands and then touching other body parts such as the eyes
or ears. Or, pathogens caught in the
fabric of the mask can work their way through the mask’s layers and ultimately be
breathed in.
Clinical Study:
Silver Makes the Difference
But a brand new clinical study
demonstrates that when the fabric in a doctor’s facemask is embedded with
silver nanoparticles, pathogenic microbes are easily killed and therefore pose
no further threat of infection to person wearing the mask.
In the study abstract, the researchers explain they
discovered that “…nanosilver
functionalized fabrics could effectively inhibit the growth of two model
bacterial strains (i.e., Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa).”
Of course, doctors know that the Staph pathogen and the
Pseudomonas pathogen are two of today’s most problematic (and potentially deadly)
pathogens. So it naturally follows that
if the nanosilver kills these two stubborn bugs, it will kill other problematic
pathogens as well.

The researchers went on to state that “The coating of silver nanoparticles would not affect the main function
of particulate respirators (i.e., filtration of fine air-borne particles).” In other words, coating the fabric of the
mask with silver particles didn’t clog the mask up, or prevent it from
effectively filtering tiny airborne particles.
The researchers concluded:
“Nanosilver
coated particulate respirators with excellent antimicrobial activities can
provide real-time protection to people in regions with severe air pollution
against air-borne pathogens.”
What this means is that wearers of such face masks can now
enjoy not only filtration protection from particulates (i.e., germs, allergens,
dust, smoke, pollution) but also profound antimicrobial protection.
Germs and other pathogens caught in the fabric of the face
masks can now be killed before they’re able to spread, thanks to the powerful
infection-fighting properties of silver!
The Bad News: Hard to Get
Unfortunately, while silver-impregnated doctor’s face masks
are widely available throughout Asia, India and much of Europe, they’re very
difficult to find in the U.S.
That’s probably because the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) has bowed to pressure from radical environmental groups who want antimicrobial
silver to be regulated as a “pesticide” and banned from use. (See Green

It’s some of these same radical environmental groups and who
have been caught taking
millions of dollars worth of “donations” from “charitable foundations” set up
by big drug companies who traditionally hate antimicrobial silver and wish
to have it banned from public use.
As a result of this pressure from the radical environmental
groups, the EPA has placed severe restrictions on the manufacture of products
containing antimicrobial silver – so severe, in fact, that only a small handful
of consumer goods products utilizing antimicrobial silver have been allowed to
come to market over the past eight years since the EPA was pressured by
environmental groups to get involved. (See

And even in the rare instances in which you might be able to
find disposable doctor’s face masks with antimicrobial silver embedded into the
fabric, they’re generally overly-priced to boot. Instead of costing $8 or $10 for a box of 50 disposable
masks (i.e., under 20 cents per mask), the same masks featuring
silver-impregnated fabric might run a couple of dollars apiece (i.e., $39.95
for a box of 20, for example).
The Good News:
You Can Make Your Own
But here’s the truly good
news:
If you can’t find silver-impregnated antimicrobial face masks
at a price you can afford, you can always make your own for just pennies simply by buying some inexpensive
disposable face masks and spraying them lightly with colloidal silver just
before you need to wear them.
Allow them to air dry after spraying -- and voila! – you’ll be able to enjoy the infection-fighting
protection of silver in your face mask without
the exorbitant cost.
Most experts recommend face masks that meet the NIOSH N95 filtration standard, which
basically means that mask filters out at least 95% or more of particulates down
to 0.3 microns in diameter.
If NIOSH certified N95
masks can’t be found, make sure the mask is “medical grade” and has a BFE
(bacterial filtration efficiency rating) of at least 95% or more and a PFE
(particulate efficiency rating) of at least 95% or more.

generally be found on Amazon, or through other online sources.

silver, and allow it to air dry before use.
