Ionic Silver Nanoparticles for Better Food Packaging and Fresher, Safer Food

for fresher, safer food (credit: KUT)
Scientists from Lithuania have come up with another new use of ionic silver, and it’s quite astonishing.

They’ve developed a new, completely natural and biodegradable food packaging “plastic” that not only keeps food fresher, longer, but also saves lives by helping stop the spread of food poisoning pathogens.

Here’s the straight scoop on this exciting new innovation you won’t hear anywhere else…

Hi, Steve Barwick here, for The Silver Edge

It’s exciting to find that scientists from Lithuania's Kaunas University of Technology (KUT) have developed a brand new “plastic” food wrap that's not only specifically designed to be biodegradable (because it’s made from natural plant-based cellulose fibers), but that also helps keep food fresher longer than conventional plastic wraps, and prevents food poisoning pathogens from spreading.

I’ll tell you more about that in just a second.  But first, here’s some quick and interesting background information that will be helpful for understanding this astonishing new breakthrough:
So it should come as no surprise when we learn that researchers from Lithuania have discovered a way to create biodegradable plastic food wrapping impregnated with ionic silver nanoparticles.  Here’s what’s happening, according to an article titled Clove and Silver Make for Better Food Packaging:

“…scientists from Lithuania's Kaunas University of Technology (KUT) have developed a new food wrap that's not only biodegradable, but that also keeps food fresh for longer than conventional plastic.

Made mainly from a plant-derived cellulose composite, the new material also contains clove essential oil along with ionic silver nanoparticles.

The clove provides it with anti-oxidizing qualities by binding free radicals, while the silver adds an antimicrobial effect by killing microorganisms.

Surprisingly, it was found that the addition of the silver also makes the plastic more elastic and thus stronger.”

According to the Lithuanian scientists behind this project, the new food wrapping “plastic” degrades in landfills in around two years because it’s largely composed of plant-based cellulose and natural materials, whereas conventional plastic food wrapping produced with synthetic petroleum by-products can remain in landfills for decades without degrading.

What’s more, according to a press release from Lithuania’s Kaunas University of Technology, the silver-based antimicrobial properties of this new food packaging are designed to help cut down on deaths from food poisoning pathogens.  They wrote:

“…more than 350,000 people die from food borne illnesses every year. 52,000 deaths are caused by salmonella, 37,000 by e. coli bacteria, and 40 percent of food poisoning cases are children younger than 5 years old.

Our goal was to create a biodegradable package, which could help to keep food fresh for longer, which could have anti-oxidizing or antimicrobial properties.

…Active components of clove essential oil are very effective in tying free radicals; this oil proved efficient in enriching packaging with anti-oxidizing qualities. This effect helps to keep food fresh for longer, but such a package is not antimicrobial”…

To achieve antimicrobial effect, we added ionic silver particles to the cellulose based packaging. The results we achieved were quite unexpected – the silver particles made the packaging film more elastic and stronger”…

The film which is enriched with silver inhibits the growth of microorganisms and its antimicrobial properties remain active for long periods of time.

In other words, the new cellulose “plastic” food wrap not only helps keep food fresher, longer, but it’s also natural, non-toxic and far more easily biodegradable because it’s composed of plant fiber instead of petroleum byproducts.

It also turns out to be stronger than conventional plastic food wrapping in terms of wear and tear while under use.  Finally, the new “plastic” is more elastic, or flexible, thanks to the silver.

And top it all off, use of this new breakthrough food-wrap can help save lives by keeping food poisoning pathogens in check, thanks largely to the ionic silver nanoparticles the food wrapping is impregnated with!

So, kudos to the Lithuanian researchers behind this product.

All I can add to the conversation is that I hope the radical, anti-silver environmentalists here in the U.S. and around the world don’t get wind of the fact that the product contains ionic silver nanoparticles.  As soon as they hear that, they’ll do the bidding of their big corporate masters and work to destroy the commercial use of this beneficial new product, as they did several years back with the silver-impregnated butcher paper from Israel.

The Israeli Butcher Paper Story

When Israeli researches announced several years ago that they had developed a silver-impregnated butcher paper to help store-bought meats stay fresh longer, and by extension, help prevent food poisoning bacteria from spreading on meats in supermarkets, the radical anti-silver environmentalists came unglued and began vehemently trashing the idea.

Without any evidence at all, they claimed that the colloidal silver nanoparticles being used in the butcher paper were “inherently risky” and would “harm the environment” when the butcher paper ended up in landfills.

I later wrote the article “In Defense of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles:  It’s Time to Kick Some Environmentalist Butt,” in which I demolished the environmentalist arguments against the use of silver in food packaging and preservation.

What’s more, I pointed out that many of the same U.S. environmental groups who were screaming to high heaven about the supposed “dangers” of silver in food packaging were simultaneously taking tens of thousands, and in some cases even millions of dollars from charitable foundations set up by Big Pharma.

Many observers hold the opinion that these huge sums of money from Big Pharma’s coffers are nothing more than hush money payoffs to keep environmentalist groups railing against mythical “harm” from silver in the environment (which is hilarious, since silver came from the environment in the first place), while in reality the environment is becoming overloaded with tons of toxic drugs and drug residues that now permeate most drinking water in the U.S., potentially causing long-term harm to young and old alike.

Later, as the environmental hysteria against silver spread around the globe, I wrote the article, The Global Environmental Campaign to Ban Antimicrobial Silver, which revealed the true reason for the worldwide environmental campaign against the use of infection-fighting silver in consumer products.

That article was reprinted in foreign press sources around the world, and was largely instrumental in helping quell much of the hysteria.

Antimicrobial Silver for Non-Scientists

Thankfully, you don’t have to be a university scientist to take advantage of the powerful, all-natural disinfectant, food preservation and antimicrobial qualities of ionic silver nanoparticles.

After all, safe, natural colloidal silver – available in most well-stocked health food stores around the country, or easy to make yourself with a simple, kitchen counter top device called a colloidal silver generator -- is composed of pure ionic silver nanoparticles.

Indeed, tens of millions of people around the world use colloidal silver regularly to help keep their families safe and infection-free thanks to its powerful antimicrobial, food-preserving, household disinfecting and infection-fighting properties.

Here are a just few articles you might want to read through to see how colloidal silver is used by millions of families world-wide in their homes and personal lives:
