The book The Use of Colloids in Health and Disease by Alfred B. Searle, was first published in Britain, in 1920.
It is long-since out-of-print.
But in its time it caused a revolution in thinking in regards to the treatment of infectious illness and disease with colloidal metals.
It was written as a science book.
But it was designed to teach doctors about the many remarkable discoveries that had been made in other branches of science regarding the colloidal nature of all biological systems, including the human body –
-- and about the astonishing healing properties of colloidal metals and minerals – including colloidal silver -- when applied to the human body.
The Purpose of the Book
The idea behind the book was that doctors would be able to use these new discoveries from other branches of science as a means of better understanding the human biological system…
…as well as being able to more successfully treat an incredibly wide variety of infectious conditions with colloidal metals.
The book starts with the following acknowledgement:
“The difference between a health and a diseased organism is so important, and the necessity for improving the health of the nation is so urgent, that any application of knowledge to this end is worth very serious consideration.
Consequently it is necessary that any possible use of discoveries in branches of science, other than medicine, should be brought to the attention of all concerned with the least possible delay…
…The study of hygiene and of many diseases has been enormously facilitated by the discovery that many of the ills the flesh is heir to, and many others which it is unnecessary to suffer, are due to the influence of bacteria and their products.”
The book then goes on to document and discuss two important discoveries the author considered crucial for doctors of that time to recognize and understand:
1.) The discovery that the human biological system is basically colloidal in nature (as are plant and animal systems), and…
2.) The discovery that the use of certain metals and minerals, in their colloidal state, have profound healing attributes on the human body, particularly on the illnesses and disease states caused by bacterial infections.

What Researchers Knew in the 1920’s

The following is an extensive quotation taken from pages 83-86 of Searle’s book, shortened only slightly for the sake of space.
It is Searle’s brief overview of the medical and scientific discoveries of his time in regards to colloidal silver, documenting the numerous infectious conditions and diseases for which this powerful natural substance had already been successfully used:
“Colloidal silver has been used with marked success in the following cases, cited by C.E.A. MacLeod:
Septic and follicular tonsillitis
Vincent’s angina
Phlyctenular conjunctivitis
Gonorrheal conjunctivitis
Spring catarrh
Impetigo (contagious acne of face and body)
Septic ulcers of legs
Ringworm of body
Tinea versicolor
Soft sores
Suppurative appendicitis after operations
Pustular exzema of scalp and pubes
Chronic eczema of meatus of ear with recurrent boils
Chronic eczema of anterior nares
Offensive discharge in case of chronic suppuration in otitis media
Bromidrosis of feet
Axillae and blind boils of neck
Sir James Castle has found it particularly effective in cases of sprue, dysentery, and intestinal troubles. Being non-toxic, the dose can be increased from 1 to 2 or more drachms twice or thrice daily.
A. Legge Roe regards stable colloidal silver as a most useful preparation in ophthalmic practice, and particularly in cases of gonorrheal ophthalmia, purulent ophthalmia of infants, infected ulcers of the cornea and hypopyon ulcer…interstitial keratitis, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, and burns and other wounds of the cornea.
According to this authority, the great chemosis which usually accompanies the use of silver nitrate is avoided and, in his opinion, if colloidal silver were adopted in every case of purulent ophthalmia of infants, “there would be no such thing as impaired sight or blindness from this cause.”
He has had many cases of interstitial keratitis in adults, in which the complete opacity of the cornea has become absolutely clear in from three to five months, and anyone who has had much experience of this disease in adults knows how often permanent impairment of sight results, and how long the treatment used to last…
…Sir Malcolm Morris has found that colloidal silver is free from the drawbacks of other preparations of silver, viz. the pain caused and the discoloration of the skin;
…indeed, instead of producing irritation it has a distinctly soothing effect. It rapidly subdues inflammation and promotes the healing of lesions. He has had remarkable results in enlarged prostate with irritation of the bladder, in pruritis ani and perineal eczema, and in haemorrhoids.
J. Mark Hovell has found colloidal silver beneficial for permanently restoring the potency of the Eustachian tubes and for reducing nasopharyngeal catarrh.
Colloidal silver has also been used successfully in septic conditions of the mouth (including tonsilitis and quinsies), ear (including Menier's symptoms and closure to Valsava's inflation), and in generalized septicemia, leucorrhoea, cystitis, whopping cough, and shingles.
...Collosol argentum [a early commercial form of colloidal silver -- ED] has also proved useful in influenza, both as a prophylactic and for curative purposes when applied as a spray to the nostrils, for bathing the eyes, and as a gargle for the throat.
B. Seymour Jones has used an intranasal spray of colloidal silver in a case of cerebro-spinal meningitis.
He has also used colloidal silver with marked advantage in several cases of rhinitis and oedematous enlargement of the posterior ends of the middle and inferior turbinates with true hyperplasia.”
The Rise and Fall of Colloidal Silver
As you can see from the above excerpt from Searle’s book, by the early 1920’s researchers had already documented a remarkable and even astonishing number of safe and effective uses for colloidal silver in the treatment of infectious illness and disease.
And thanks in no small part to Searle’s book, as those successful uses for colloidal silver became more widely known among doctors…
…a number of new silver-based remedies were developed by researchers and effectively utilized by doctors around the world, saving untold thousands of lives from the ravages of infectious disease!
But of course, after the advent of synthetic antibiotic drugs -- starting with the sulfa class drugs in the 1940’s -- colloidal silver usage gradually fell out of favor with doctors.
This was largely because the major pharmaceutical corporations had promised that their new synthetic prescription antibiotic drugs would bring about the “end of infectious disease as we know it.”
Of course, as they say, the rest is history.
Big Pharma began to tighten its grip on modern medicine throughout the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s – gradually edging out non-patentable over-the-counter natural remedies like colloidal silver and replacing them with new, patented synthetic drugs.
And thus our current drug-based medical paradigm was born.
Resurgence of Colloidal Silver
It wasn’t until the start of the natural health movement of the 1980’s and 90’s that colloidal silver usage was brought back into vogue –
-- this time among natural health enthusiasts who saw the handwriting on the wall in regards to the abysmal failure of prescription antibiotic drugs to “end infectious disease as we know it.”
These early natural health enthusiasts were leery of the potential toxic effects on the human body of the ever-stronger classes of prescription antibiotic drugs being developed by Big Pharma.
And as historical information on the infection-fighting qualities of colloidal silver began to leak out, they embraced it in place of antibiotic drugs.
After the 1994 passage of the DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health Education Act), millions more Americans joined the natural health revolution, and began to discover the many healing benefits of colloidal silver.
Soon, virtually every well-stocked health food store in America was carrying this remarkable infection-fighting and immune-boosting substance.
What’s more, as television news reports and cover stories in Time magazine and Newsweek documented the fact that the pathogens were winning the battle against Big Pharma’s antibiotic drug arsenal –
-- many more Americans began abandoning the use of prescription antibiotic drugs altogether, turning instead to safe, natural remedies like colloidal silver.
Indeed, it is estimated that today, as many as 10 million people across North America are experienced colloidal silver users!
The First Attempt to Ban Colloidal Silver
But in 1997 – only three short years after the passage of the DSHEA -- the Food & Drug Administration suddenly announced its intentions in the Federal Register to altogether ban the over-the-counter sale of colloidal silver.
Americans who had experienced its profound healing benefits – and who suspected that Big Pharma was behind the proposed ban -- protested to the agency by the thousands.
The FDA was inundated with letters and calls from colloidal silver users. Many simply reported the astonishing healings they had experienced while using this remarkable natural substance, and begged that its sale not be banned.
Others documented the long and successful historical usage of colloidal silver in health and medicine, hoping that would dissuade the FDA from banning the substance.
The FDA summarily dismissed this documentation as “irrelevant.” But the public protestations nevertheless had their impact.
In 1999, after having studied the situation for three long years, the FDA relented. The agency in essence admitted it was unable to find any reason to outright ban colloidal silver.
Instead, they released a “Final Report” on colloidal silver, stating that while they could not consider it to be “safe and effective” as an over-the-counter infection-fighting agent (since it hadn’t gone through their arduous and costly drug-testing procedures) –
-- it would not be banned from sale as an over-the-counter supplement as long as distributors no longer touted it for use against infections and disease.
In other words, the FDA ruled that the public could not be told by colloidal silver vendors about its astonishing infection-fighting qualities!
Virtually overnight, all mention of the historically documented ability of colloidal silver to heal infectious illness and disease became verboten in product labeling or advertising.
As a result, nutritional supplement companies that distribute colloidal silver products are now routinely threatened with fines and harassed by FDA bureaucrats for even mentioning its many documented historical uses – though many such companies still take the risk in order to educate customers.
In essence, the FDA simply ignored the massive historical body of evidence on the healing benefits of colloidal silver, ruling that the information was not relevant to its sale as a nutritional supplement, and thus could not be used.
Unabashed Hypocrisy:
Big Pharma Re-Enters The Picture
However, Big Pharma, which is now at its collective wits end due to the number of new, antibiotic-resistant super-pathogens emerging, is no longer ignoring the historical evidence for silver as an infection-fighting agent.
Indeed, as their synthetic prescription antibiotic drugs continue to lose their glamour, global pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson and Johnson are suddenly fast at work developing new and in some cases strange and freakish silver-based drugs –
-- which they claim will wipe out food poisoning viruses such as the dreaded rotavirus, and destroy flu and cold viruses as well.
In other words, while nutritional supplement distributors are forbidden by the FDA from revealing the fact that silver kills pathogens…
…Big Pharma is doing a complete 180 degree turn, and embracing silver’s well-known infection-fighting qualities in order to produce new drugs utilizing it!
Over the past few years alone a number of new in vitro clinical studies have been conducted, demonstrating the effectiveness of silver colloids (now fashionably called “silver nanoparticles,” or “nanosilver”) against a wide range of disease-causing microorganisms –
-- including HIV and other viruses, antibiotic resistant super-pathogens such as MRSA, disease-causing fungal pathogens, and much more.
Ultimately, all of these new studies are being conducted with the intention of developing silver-based drugs that can be patented and monopolized by the huge, multi-national pharmaceutical corporations and sold to the public as the latest infection-fighting “wonder drugs.”
What’s happening is that the tarnished medical reputation of silver as an infection-fighting agent is now gradually being rehabilitated by medical science as new silver-based drugs are being developed.
But simultaneously, colloidal silver nutritional supplements are routinely being denigrated as harmful toxins and dismissed by the media as potentially harmful.
What Next? A Global Ban on Colloidal Silver
What’s coming next – slowly but surely -- is the removal of all natural, over-the-counter silver-based products such as colloidal silver from the global marketplace, in order to make way for the new class of silver-based antibiotic drugs that are being developed.
Already throughout the European Union (EU), the sale of colloidal silver as a nutritional supplement has been banned, as of January 1, 2010.
And medical bureaucrats in the FDA are now working to harmonize (with an emphasis on “harm”) U.S. food supplement laws with those of Europe, through the Codex Alimentarius process.
This means supplements that are no longer legal to sell throughout the European Union will no longer be legal to sell in the U.S. either!
What’s more, the Australian TGA (Australia’s equivalent of the FDA) has now ruled that colloidal silver products are considered to be ineffective and potentially unsafe.
And Canada’s Health Canada agency for the last few years been issuing “unauthorized product” warnings against colloidal silver vendors, and has simultaneously begun soliciting “adverse reaction reports” against specific colloidal silver products.
In short, there is a global move afoot to gradually remove safe, natural colloidal silver products from the marketplace, in anticipation of the advent of a new class of silver-based prescription antibiotic drugs!

Everything is coming full circle.
The discoveries of the healing power of colloidal silver in the 1920’s are now spurring the new silver-based prescription drugs of the 21st century.
